Title: Best joysticks for Namco Assault
Post by: Bleagh on June 24, 2014, 06:31:35 pm
So I've got an assault board and I want to build a cp that resembles the original.  I have 2 of these sticks:

http://groovygamegear.com/webstore/index.php?main_page=product_info&products_id=399 (http://groovygamegear.com/webstore/index.php?main_page=product_info&products_id=399)

but I'm not terribly thrilled with the light touch of the buttons or height of the stick.

These are expensive and I can't seem to find anywhere that has them.

I don't want any lame crane game topfires either.

Anyone know of any other good substitutes for the original Assault joysticks?

Not any cheaper but, if you can't find ones from the real machine, maybe a Happ Heavy Duty stick:

Divemaster has them here (http://www.arcadeemulator.net/cgi-bin/shop/cp-app.cgi?usr=51F4121968&rnd=6577391&rrc=N&affl=&cip=68.13.130.140&act=&aff=&pg=prod&ref=HeavyDuty8-WayTriggerJoyst&cat=Joysticks&catstr=HOME:Joysticks) for less.   ;D

Good suggestions.  Too bad that heavy duty trigger stick looks more like a flight stick than a tank stick.  I guess I'm just being picky, lol.

Just verify he has what you want before you order. I had to wait over 6 weeks just to find out he couldn't get the items I ordered.

have you ask around for a set of assault sticks or a populated cp?

Just in case you were not aware...  Assault (one of my Favs),  is a set of 4 ways.   The restrictor plays a big part of how that game plays.

And they HAVE to be 4-ways, the game wigs out if you swap in 8-ways.

Assault sticks were based on Atari's over-engineered (and very poorly wearing) Atari logo stick.  Most Assaults have some pretty messed up sticks and replacements almost never come up for sale and when they do they will usually go for more than what an entire machine will sell for.

Unfortunately the best solution seems to be 4-way sticks from claw grabber machines.

So I ended up getting 2 of these:

http://www.focusattack.com/seimitsu-ls-32-triple-restrictor-plate/ (http://www.focusattack.com/seimitsu-ls-32-triple-restrictor-plate/)

They line up almost perfectly with the pegs on the bottom of the mini flight stick.  I just had to dremel off everything around the 4 way part and widen 2 holes and extend the other 4 around the gate diagonally outwards away from the center by about 1mm.  Then take the bottom of the flight stick off and bolt the restrictor in since none of those holes are threaded.  Put the shaft in next since the actuator won't fit through the gate.  Repeat for the other stick.

Works amazingly!  Sure beats paying $500+ for some original sticks... assuming you can find them.
