Title: Still a little confused about setting up video for a supergun
Post by: Sarver Systems on June 02, 2014, 11:55:13 am
I'm building a super gun to test jamma boards, power supplies, and monitors.

I've got everything figured out (and will be posting pics soon), except for how to setup the video side of it.

I know I want to be able to test everything from old raster monitors all the way up to LCDs.

Can someone point me in the right direction for some kind of card that can output all of those?

Isn't this the answer(http://i.imgur.com/byuZfp1.jpg)

GBS 8200 Video Converter CGA EGA YUV RGB TO VGA Arcade Jamma Game Monitor to LCD

Connect a craftymech converter and to your LCD!

I'm at work right now, can't view ebay.

This will connect to the video-out of the jamma, and allow me to connect ANY monitor to it?

By ANY, I mean MOST. I know there's always going to be exceptions.

most people use superguns to run boards, do you want one to test arcade monitors?

if thats your purpose all you need is a jamma loom , power supply, and isolation transformer.

Well, this is sort of a hybrid supergun. I should call it a superdupergun.

Its going to test monitors, boards, and power supplies.

I'll have a full array of keys to test PacMan, Galaga, Mappy, Defender, DK, etc... as well.

I was able to pull that link up on my phone.

Does anyone know if it'll display on more than 1 monitor at a time?

THe reason I am asking is that the supergun will have an LCD built in, that I'd like to leave hardwired in. I don't want to have to unplug it every time I test a monitor.

all you need to test a power supply is a voltmeter/multimeter.  The board linked only has 1 VGA out , but if you plug the video feed into the video converter instead of the super gun, you should be ok?

Forgot to mention, my LCD is from a portable VCR recorder thing. It uses composite (the yellow jack).

My supergun has built-in multimeters for the 3 voltages. I'll have 4 test jacks to plug in the testing units.

+12V, +5V, -5V, and GND.

I had a chance to read through the manual, and this board isn't going to do what I need. It only has a single output on it, for a single style monitor.

I need 1 input, multiple outputs. 1 output for each style of monitor.

1 output for each style of monitor.

That's where you are losing me.  What style(s) of monitor are you talking about?

I want to be able to test everything from raster monitors up to LCDs.

Input methods:
Jamma (obviously)
Defender
PacMan
Galaga
etc...

Outputs:
Raster
CRT (various size tubes with various inputs)
LCD (no need for DVI)

even  non JAMMA wired games still output video to red green blue ground and sync

The output from the video converter mentioned above is VGA, which uses the same connector for both CRT & LCD monitors. It sounds like you need the version of the Gonbes board with two VGA outputs: http://www.ebay.com/itm/like/250899701935?lpid=82 (http://www.ebay.com/itm/like/250899701935?lpid=82)

Question though, why are you wanting to test VGA monitors?

Also by "old raster" I assume you mean arcade monitors. In that case you don't need a converter board, the video off the game pcb (Jamma or otherwise) is fed directly into the monitor chassis.

OK, I'm taking all of this in.

I wanted to test LCD monitors, because I do have a handful of megatouches that are LCD.
And I have some asteroids cabs that are raster monitors.

Knowing that the raster monitors run directly from the jamma connector is a big help. thank you.

Asteroids used VECTOR monitors

Asteroids originally used a vector monitor, instead of a raster display (vector is a totally different beast from raster).

Only Standard Res arcade monitors will work with the video signal (15khz) straight from the Jamma connector. VGA CRTs are also "raster" monitors, but will only accept VGA signals (31Khz).
