Milled plastic or foam block letter painted with fluorescent paint under a blue LED wash so it pops.
One user posted a really sweet foam marquee a year or so ago but let his thread die IIRC.

How many games are you thinking of having?
I always wanted to do a scrolling marquee with a roller blind and a drill motor.
I just had a crazy thought. :lol
Are you old enough to remember Colorforms? (http://www.ehow.com/how_5444700_make-colorforms.html)

Neon is going to be blinding at that distance.
How about something like a backlit lenticular marquee?

Found a shot of what I was talking about:

Do that as namco and back lite it like Nep did his Two Headed Beast and you've got yourself a slick marquee at a fraction of the cost and blindingness of neon.

I'm all over that nixie tube idea
I'm guessing you're thinking fixed letters because most nixies only contain a combination of a few letters or numbers?
It'd be fantastic to have the nixies light up with the name of the maker of whatever game was played. Perhaps a bit too ambitious though :)

Blacklight paint with UV LED strips on the marquee glass hidden by the marquee retainers.

Totally agree. That just seems like a lot of scratch to drop on a marquee. Do it like above and you can get a better looking effect for way less.

+1 Save the neon budget for a Beer sign on the wall or a "flynns Arcade" sign :)

This is exactly what I was thinking, but if you could get it made of some sort of translucent plastic, and backlight it, then maybe using a piece of tinted glass in place of a standard marquee strip.
