Looking to get a number of Marquees printed. What I'm looking to design is a quick change marquee system. The basics of my marquee below:
What I'm thinking is for some kind of C shaped housing along the left, bottom and right to slide the marquees into from the top.
The top could have some kind of hinged L-shaped (auto-locking?) bracket to lift up and fix down to free up the top of the marquee space to let you slide it in...
Hope that makes sense!?
Problem being, my imagination is stuck there! No idea what materials or things would be available for this!
Any ideas?

I had an idea for a removable top and bottom L Bracket that was held in place with flush mount rare earth magnets.
I have some drawings and tests of the idea in my FLYNN's build thread.
The idea is basically to use L brackets made from bending tin. 1" along the one side, and ¾" along the front facing side.
Rabbit the top and bottom edge of the the marquee box and inset some magnets.

a bracket like these. however this is Aluminium and has a 1" rise and run. If it were done it would have to be simply fabricated.

here are the inset rare earth magnets. these were available in North America via Lee Valley Tools, but i'm sure you can get them other places. 4 on the bottom and 2 on the top should be more than enough to hold the light tin brackets in place.

here i was just testing imbedding the magnets. i used a spade bit, but a forester bit and ¾" wood would be best.

ultimately the plan was to use this to avoid seeing screws rather than being able to simply swap out my marquee plexi. Since i'm only using one marquee there is really no need for this on my build. and now that i'm outweighing seeing 3-4 screw heads (or using glue) from all the extra work this would be i've decided to ditch the idea and just attach it in a traditional manor.
Not sure if this will help, but i figure this way you could just have a box with the plexi marquees in it and a couple magnetic brackets.
-
You could also maybe make a cab marquee like I did on my current project "Gayles Jukebox".
I have changed it several times in the past few weeks.
Link to the thread is in my signature.

I was thinking about this topic as well. I was thinking about building, if possible, a slide in paper marquee in between two pieces of plexi. Just trying to figure the point where the opening would be for this, side or top? If on top, possibly making a small hidden hinged door, using barrel hinges or similar, saw them here in HaRuMaN's post http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php/topic,130522.msg1431299.html#msg1431299 (http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php/topic,130522.msg1431299.html#msg1431299)
and use the rare earth magnet idea to keep it held down. Or even easier, use a magnetic cabinet latch with metal strip on door and magnet on side of cabinet. It costs $1.27 at Lowes.

I would draw it up but I haven't messed with google sketchup before and don't have paper around to draw up.
This may even work with your idea to just replace single plexi marquee as well.
What do you think?
-
I used some velcro on my small cabinets. The heavy dity stuff is awesome and leaves no screws showing, and lets you open up the two pieces of plexi easily and get a tight fit back together every time.
I fear though that the novelty of swapping out marquees will get old fast.
-
Perhaps make it one big roll of marquees with some space between each - that you turn a knob to scroll and some way of holding the scroll of paper up against the plexi.
-
London Buses used to have a scrolling mechanism that allowed changing of the destination, Maybe something like that, Scroll has 10 different marquees printed, then it uses two rollers to scroll between them and means that they are under tension.

Not exactly a cheap method to do things, But I bet people would be impressed, press a button and marquee changes. I would be much more impressed with that then watching as you remove the marquee bezel and change it out. But if it is just for yourself I would go down the rare earth magnet route, I can't see any reason why that wouldn't work.
You could also use a piano hinge on the top of the marquee to allow you to swing it up. Route a pocket in the back of the frame you showed in first post where a Plexi sandwich with the art inbetween will sit. You then pop the back piece off, Put new marquee in. Pop back piece back on and swing back down into place. You could use a couple of small inserts and nuts or you could once again use rare earth magnets to hold it in place.

Some fantastic solutions on here....
Like all of them! Think chance's is the most do-able, but still not what I'm after!
Loved the "London Bus" solution, but a bit pricey. Even took me off looking at 16:3 LCD displays... one day...
The frustrating thing is, I can picture exactly what I'm looking for... it's this:
(that'd taken me half a day in sketchup!)
You get the idea - mitered corners and bracket fixed to the cab via screws!
Surely - this must exist somewhere on this planet? Black preferably. :) Can't find it anywhere on the web! It's undoubtedly my poor search skills or imagination. Creative sourcing isn't my strong point.
Any ideas??

Aluminum U-channel painted black with 45 degree angles on the corners to build the frame - it comes in a variety of widths

No prob, let us know how it goes.

Heh - dammit - in my excitement, I forgot to check the material. They kindly sent out some samples. Plastic. :(
Dimensions mainly ok though, long leg of the J needs to be a little shorter, but could always trim.
OK.. onto more sourcing - exactly the same, but in black aluminum...

Where would one find a screen that size though??

Search "Ultra wide screen monitor" -- Newegg has an LG 25" ( http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16824005626&cm_re=Ultra_widescreen_monitor-_-24-005-626-_-Product (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16824005626&cm_re=Ultra_widescreen_monitor-_-24-005-626-_-Product) )which is probably a bit smaller than the one used in the video for $299 and they go up from there quickly as the size increases (ie. 29" run around $500 - $800)

Aren't they ultimately designed for desktop use though? The one used in the Youtube video looks too small to be of much desktop use... unless I've got my sense of scale way off!
Be good to find one thats 27" by 6"! That'd fit in nicely ;)

Those are even more expensive -- They do make 16:3 displays that would be close to that like this 28 inch stretch ultras wide ( http://www.caltronind.com/digital-signage/lcd-display/sd-281-28-inch-ultra-wide-stretch-digital-signage-display (http://www.caltronind.com/digital-signage/lcd-display/sd-281-28-inch-ultra-wide-stretch-digital-signage-display) ) that is [29.06 x 6.93 x 2.15 inch] overall dimension so the display is probably close to 27x6 !! but they are probably over $2000 (figure a 19 inch 16:3 panel runs $1550 -- http://www.frontierpc.com/displays/monitors/lcd-monitor/viewsonic/extreme-wide/ew1930-widescreen-lcd-monitor-1020144880.html (http://www.frontierpc.com/displays/monitors/lcd-monitor/viewsonic/extreme-wide/ew1930-widescreen-lcd-monitor-1020144880.html) )

My build is already costing me about double what i expected so I'm just going to leave this one in my dreams...
-
What about the plastic trim for frp panels? I just used some on mine. Or perhaps J-bead for drywall? A little spray paint for either and you'd be all set.
-
Thanks for the reps, chaps + especially for the embarrassingly intuitive link, JDFan (my brain gets more diffuse and missing-the-obvious with age!)
Now, of course... I really, really, really, really, really want one of those 16:3 displays!
Of course - they're gonna cost a fortune new, but my understanding is that these are mainly used for shop/promotional/show displays? So surely, there must be some peddler out there of ex-displays @ bargain prices. However, if the tech is still quite new, guessing these still will be pricey...
Awwww... I want one!!
DeLuSioNaL29 - where's this vid from??

I have hinges on the top of my cab so you can just open up the top and pull out the marquee which just slips into a slot on each side
