Title: Slightly off beat and indie games
Post by: mgb on May 23, 2014, 11:08:36 am
I'm sure this has been touched on in the past, but I figured the "cp layout" & "whats the best joystick" subjects are covered every other day, so why not.
So anyway, last year I built a budget game pc with an AMD A8 3870k, 8G Ram, a 128G SSD and a 1TB hard drive. I mostly use it for console emulation and casual gaming as well video streaming and what not. Its connected to my lcd tv. it makes nice for game nights with my son.
I love the many slightly off beat and indie games that have come out in the last few years.
I fully enjoyed Machinarium and I've been playing Braid and Bastion. Soon I will give Transistor and Lovers in a Dangerous Spacetime a try.
I also gotta get super meat boy. There also seem to be a fair amount of games like these that are online only (no download version).
I finally just started playing Bastion last night and I highly recommend it. its got a cool setup where the board builds before you and the narration feature is kinda cool.
There are points where the screen gets crowded with enemies and it kinda feels like a modernized version of Gauntlet.
Anyway, I'd love to hear of other titles that I may not be aware of that fit in this type of genre.

I really enjoyed Limbo.  It's pretty short, so I wouldn't pay a lot for it.  (I think I got it as part of a humble bundle).
I played through the entire game on my cab.  Simple puzzle platformer that only uses 2 buttons.
You repeatedly die horrific deaths until you figure out the puzzle.
I like how nothing is explained and yet intrigue is created.

Don't watch too much, or you'll ruin the puzzles for yourself!

Super hexagon looks pretty cool though I see myself failing much at it.
Limbo really looks like my kinda game. Very cool. It's $9.99 on steam. I'm gonna look around and see if its cheaper somewhere

Concentrate you must.  Its a a bunch of fun.  I'm not terribly good at it.  I find that if I relax and let it happen, I do well.  Do, there is no try.

Limbo *WILL* be cheaper.  I don't know if it was on sale at the humble store, but once this Steam Sale starts up, it will almost definitely be on sale.  It has been every other time.

I have Electronic Super Joy.  Bought mine in the Steam Store.  Pretty cool soundtrack and fun game.  (You will die tons of times, just like in Super Meat Boy).

Gonna throw a link to Locomolito's stuff in this thread for the sake of anyone who doesn't already know about it.

Thanks for that locomalito link. His games look great.
I'm also really enjoying limbo. Thanks Malenko.

To me, its great to know that in this time when modern day games seem to have lost a lot of the traditional play value and developers seem more interested in producing blockbuster movies or exploiting the latest technology (as was done with Wii and Kinect), that there are still these kind of games being made and this idea seems to be catching on more and more.

I just did the same, pieced together another pc so I can fire up a game like this while doing some work.  Have been revisiting a lot of games I've collected in Steam.

Like Insanely Twisted Shadow Planet

and Deadlight

and Costume Quest

Picked up Lego Marvel, need to get another controller so I can play with my son.

If you like Limbo, you should try Closure.  It's a puzzler that is similar in terms of aesthetic (black & white graphics).  And it's got a unique game mechanic.

Couple other awesome indie games to check out that I don't think were mentioned are:

The Stanley Parable - Hard to describe without giving away the purpose behind this game.  Best thing to do is download the demo, as it will give you a true feel for what the real game is like. ;)

Antichamber - FPS puzzler with mind-bending puzzles.  Probably the closest you'll ever get to being inside an M.C. Escher painting.

Great
Thanks for all the great input everyone.
Also, while not really such an off beat game, I'm looking forward to playing Gone Home which I'll get soon.

Gone Home.  Man, that was the ultimate troll out of $20.  If you haven't read anything about it yet, don't.

I just bought "Brothers" last night. It was only $2.99 on Steam.
It's pretty cool, especially for being so cheap.
Using an Xbox controller, you control each brother. The left analog controls one while the right analog controls the other. And the triggers are used to engage either one with an object.

Some stupid puzzle involving shoving a crate or scaring a dog or something in Brothers took damn near an hour to figure out in my household.   :timebomb:

Yeah, Brothers is great. Well worth the $3

Found a really cool Missile Command style game on Steam that works well with a trackball. It's called Battle Group 2. It's only $4 for the next almost 2 days.

 :lol

Told you.  Hard to believe it was $20 when it came out.  Where I really had to laugh was I got stuck about halfway through and examined the game maps and go, "hmm... obviously a secret room there... let me see how I get in."  Luckily, I was about 2mm off the switch and lost patience and moved on.

And, yes, you can beat the game in less than 2 minutes.  It's a hilarious speed run if you're so inclined.

At $5, though, it's enjoyable.  The slowly growing sense of dread was well done, I thought.

What did you think of Limbo?

I like it a lot.
to tell the truth, I haven't finished because I've just been busy with home stuff and in my free time have been playing some other games.
