Title: Dark Neon
Post by: Sjaak on May 13, 2014, 04:19:43 pm
I recently started on a project for a customer. This is going to be a cabinet similar to a Knievel, but with a dark side.

The cabinet will have a black glossy finish and there will be a lot of plexi and red leds.

I'm going to start this of with a video of the plexi overlay for the control panel.

It's intersting that your customers like really glossy cabinets (I recall the recent white one you made). The ones out here don't usually have that type of finish.

:notworthy: holy heck man, is there anything you are only "just good" at?  ...everything you do blows me away, sets a bar I can't hope to aspire too  :hissy:

The CP looks fantastic, looking forward to watching this project

Guys, thanks for all the compliment. I'm sure you won't be disappointed.

It's intersting that your customers like really glossy cabinets (I recall the recent white one you made). The ones out here don't usually have that type of finish.

Most of the cabinets I build have a matt finish and are just basic replica's of classic models. But every now and then I get a custom job. I think the black gloss fits with the Darth Vader theme nicely.

Please tell me that CP is going to be edge lit.

I find your lack of faith disturbing...The control panel will be edge lit, with red led buttons, red trackball and even red illuminated joysticks.

I'm getting CNC envy again.  :lol

I wish I had one, but this was done by a company specialized in cnc stuff.

just curious, so when you fire light through that thing will the lines show up more than the clear?

sort of like a tron type design, if so, this is gonna be sweet..... :applaud:

Will all the parts be CNC-cut? If so, I'm looking forward to more videos.  ;)

There is one more part, a 3d engraving of Darth Vader for the side of the cabinet. I'll post a video of that later.

Yes, it's going to look something like this:

Looks good, love LED edge lit projects. Only gripe is the buttons, would have loved to see some translucent red ILs on this. What technique did you use for joystick lighting? Nephring style? Chance's light pocket? Or something like Griff's baby wipe box technique? Something different perhaps?

Most of the cabinet is now covered in car wrap foil (some still with the protective layer)...and it's very shiny.

Could you put a bigger monitor in there and rotate it vertically?

Title: Re: Dark Neon
Post by: yotsuya on July 30, 2014, 02:56:01 pm
That monitor looks perfectly fine and proportional to the cabinet.
Title: Re: Dark Neon
Post by: pbj on July 30, 2014, 03:08:57 pm
The gap above the control panel to the bottom of the monitor is enormous and detracts from the looks.

You mean like Maximus is doing in Revolution 2.0 (http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php/topic,139647.0.html)?

I guess it's possible, maybe I'll do it in a future project. But this cabinet looks great as it is. There is a 16:10 screen in there which is already better than a 16:9 screen.
