Title: GroovyMame 153, ArcadeVGA 5000, Windows 7 (A few questions about resolutions)
Post by: glitch77 on May 03, 2014, 12:38:48 pm
First off, if anyone can give me a way to turn off Adobe Flash hardware acceleration in Windows 8.1, I will kiss you. ArcadeVGA has a nasty bug that crashes anything using hardware acceleration for video. So when I use Hyperspin, the videos are solid green and the frontend crashes. You can get around this in Windows 7 by right clicking a youtube video before it starts and clicking setting, then disabling hardware acceleration. This globally fixes the problem. Windows 8 has Flash for IE built in (like Chrome does), and has no such option.

Now onto the real question...

I feel like something is a bit off on some games and what resolution GroovyMame chooses. For instance, Mortal Kombat (and NBA Jam, etc) display at 521x512i, instead of 401x256@53hz (which is an ArcadeVGA resolution specifically for MK style games, see here: https://www.ultimarc.com/avgainst.html (https://www.ultimarc.com/avgainst.html).)

I'm not new to Mame by any stretch, but I am new to GM and AVGA, so please be gentle. Please let me know what other info I can provide to help!

You probably just need to edit two options which are specific for AVGA:

refresh_dont_care 1
lock_system_modes 0

If this doesn't fix it then post a log so we see what's going on.

Sorry for not replying sooner, I am having internet connection issues today :/

Yes, I have those set in mame.ini, sorry I didn't mention that before. But.. the plot thickens. When I launch Groovymame from the command line, I get this:

When I launch from Hyperspin, I get this:

Is there a way I can have GM run a log after being launched by HS?

Thank you for replying!

-- FIXED --

I set up HyperLaunch (I wasn't using it before), and it now switches resolutions perfectly!

Is GM set to run as administrator ??

I'm having a similar problem, but I don't see an option to disable hardware acceleration in the browser.  Which browser are you using?

Thanks in advance!

Just tried installing GroovyMame on my other cab with an ArcadeVGA 5000. I have the same problem as glitch77. Some of the resolutions are wrong i.e. Mortal Kombat, R-Type are really stretched. I have set GroovyMame to run as Administrator and set the following in the Mame .ini

lock_system_modes    0
refresh_dont_care      1

Have I missed a step? Do I need to run VMmaker with an ArcadeVGA or something similar?

That problem was impossible to diagnose because glitch77 didn't provide a log. May you get one for me?

Hi Andy, try setting dotclock_min 0.

Changing the "dotclock_min 0" solved the resolution problem with Mortal Kombat and R-Type and most other games seem fine, however Kung Fu Master has sound issues and seems to fast and r-type has sound issues and tearing?

Remind you're using an AVGA and understand what it implies. You only have fixed refresh rates. Kung Fu Master doesn't run at 60 Hz, forcing it to do so will cause issues. Try enabling -triplebuffer for this specific game.

So R-type was fine or has tearing? Post a thread so I can check.
