Description: Humanoid player runs through maze-like rooms, destroying robots while avoiding their fire. The indestructable Evil Otto is the game's timer, forcing the player to move on. One of the first talking games, remember "Get the Humanoid!"?
General Rules:
- One Credit, No Continues.
- Highest score wins.
- No savestates, savestate practices, etc. during the round.
- MAME INP recordings are encouraged but optional.
- A screenshot is required to enter a score (press F12 to save screenshot showing your final score) or take a photo of the game screen.
- If you're a MARP competitor on this title, keep in mind this is just a friendly competition among forum members, so maybe you shouldn't enter. However, if you're a forum member and this is a game you're good at and nobody knows about it, this is your time to shine!
- Even if you don't have a competitive score or if you don't *think* that you have a competitive score, please post it anyway to keep the thread fun & to give everybody a good sense of score ranges.
- Please make sure your scores are from games that take place during the competition period (no posting your best score from last year, etc.).
- Use of autofire or other non-standard hacks within MAME or your PC's OS are not allowed. No program or other person or entity of any sort may manipulate your controls during your game. Coaching & back-seat driving is fine as long as the party doesn't directly influence the game or controls.
- If you can beat any of the high scores from the previous competitions, you can submit your score to the BYOAC High Game Scoreboard.

3,640. This is a game where I really wish you had Robotron controls. I always find myself moving to dodge a bullet at the same time I'm firing, and then shooting in the wrong direction.

Getting the hang of it. 6770.

My game broke. Just shows a black screen with some colored dots?
Whats up with that?
-
Try a reset? (Shift F3 I believe). Sometimes helps when a game goes wacky on me.
-
Didnt work. I tried deleting it and getting it from somewhere else and same thing.
Why would it just stop working.
-
Go to your config folder and delete anything named berzerk. Same in the nvram folder.
-
Tip for better scores:
1. Try to always exit a level from the left or right side of the screen
2. As the bouncing ball uses the shortest path towards your player, you can use it sometimes to destroy any remaining robots by standing in a position so it will pass through the remaining robots.
3. Diagonals are deadly. Avoid positions where the robots can shoot diagonally at you.

Try launching the other version of the game (set 1) -- Mine had done the same thing and loading the other set and then going back somehow reset it so it started working again.
-
I will give it a shot when I get off work today.

Also deleting the cfg file ( berzerk1.cfg in the cfg folder) might also help. The game will create as new one the first time you run the game after deleting it.
-
8,490 puts me second I think. I'm glad this was picked. It vanished from my upright cab when I swapped out the PCs and I hadn't realized it was gone. I also never realized the differences between this set and the parent rom.

Well, a few days ago I got my 2nd highest (8550) score and figured I'd wait till posting cause I thought I'd have something larger but...
All I could muster was another 30 points.
8580

A new milestone - 20,000
1. Try to always exit a level from the left or right side of the screen
This is by far the best advice... even at the expense of not getting all the robots and losing the bonus. Just about all of my deaths happen when the screen first starts and you are surrounded. Starting at the mid top or bottom gives robots to your left and right a tall target to shoot at. Always go to the side unless Evil Otto is upon you :)
-
well beyond my abilities

Well, no 20000 but I improved. 7140.

I've gotten over 7000 now but all I've seen are the dark cyan robots. According to Wikipedia:
Two different versions of the game were released. In the original version, the sequence goes as follows:
Dark yellow robots that do not fire
Red robots that can fire 1 bullet (500 points)
Dark cyan robots that can fire 2 bullets (1,500 points)
In this version of the game, after 5,000 points, Evil Otto doubles his speed, moving as fast as the player while robots remain in the maze, and twice as fast as the player after all the robots are destroyed.
The revised version, which had the much larger production run of the two, features a longer color sequence after the cyan robots:
Green robots that fire 3 bullets (3k)
Dark purple robots that fire 4 bullets (4.5k)
Light yellow robots that fire 5 bullets (6k)
White robots that fire 1 fast bullet (7.5k)
Dark cyan robots that fire 2 fast bullets (10k)
Light purple robots that fire 3 fast bullets (11k)
Gray robots that fire 4 fast bullets (13k)
Dark yellow robots that fire 5 fast bullets (15k)
Red robots that fire 5 fast bullets (17k)
Light cyan robots that fire 5 fast bullets (19k)
At first I thought I was using the wrong set, but I double-checked my setup and the Game Information in MAME and I'm definitely on set 2. I don't see any dip switches that would change this. Any thoughts on what might be going on?
Thanks.
-
I have no idea what set I'm running on my Xbox, but what I read said the only difference was the speed of the bullets? I'm definitely getting white robots, though.
I don't think anyone cares much about my setup as my score isn't competitive anyway.
-
I was just about to post something about this too. I double checked am indeed running set 2 and can't find any robot color except ugly yellow, red, then the cyan/light blue ones that are the same forever after that.
I played a game just now and one of the boards started with only ONE enemy robot, which made Evil Otto come out almost instantly and there was absolutely no way I could have made any exit.
-
Could it be they're flipped? Set 2 is the original and set 1 has all the additional robot colors?
-

Yes, I've had that happen as well. When I see only a few robots I run for the nearest exit.
-

No, that's the first thing I tried. I even downloaded Frenzy to see if that other color scheme set was mistakenly attributed to Berzerk. There's no dip switch settings that change difficulty either, aside from the points you need for extra guys.
PBJ, you said you are seeing white robots. Are you first seeing green, purple, and yellow ones like in the description?
-
I'll have to ask my wife. I'm sure she'll be thrilled to assist her colorblind husband identify robot colors. :lol

-
First post from GeoMan said he reached the white robots. GeoMan, any insights on your setup?
-
Could it be they're flipped? Set 2 is the original and set 1 has all the additional robot colors?
Ok, turns out this is correct. After playing set 1 a little longer IT is the revised version with the many colors of robots that shoot faster. I guess I didn't play long enough while checking set 1 to see the new colors. I was looking for green robots right away and neglected to read the part about "...a longer color sequence after the cyan robots".
After reading this (http://www.classicarcadegaming.com/forums/index.php?topic=4077.0) it seems the MAME team (or whoever dumped the roms?) made set 1 the later version since it was the most popular and set 2 is the original.
Do we start the competition over and have everyone use set 1 (which was the idea in the first place)? The robots shoot faster bullets, and more of them. It plays a bit different, and seems quite a bit more difficult >:D

Good to know, but at this point we're only five days from end of competition. I'd say let's complete this, or end now and do one week with set 1 so there's a week with each?
-
Whatever - I guess it's probably up to Comtek since it's his competition?
Here's my set 1 submission. Thems white robots fires fasts.
-
You're jumping the gun a bit there, popsicle -- that leg of the race hasn't been agreed on yet. >:D
How about using both sets with the overall winner determined by adding each participant's best score for Set 1 and Set 2?
That allows for current score submissions to be used, introduces the more challenging ROMset, and allows participants to employ different scoring strategies. ;D

Here is my set 2 score, 12,660. I think I can better this. I think that if a person gets the right series of screens you can run up a good score. There are a couple layouts that are more conducive to being diagonally killed within half a second. ;D
Set 1 is more fun! The white robots are bad, they sure do fire fast! scored a 9,130 with only a couple games.
Considering there are only a couple days left I'd probably leave the way it is but I'm easy to get along with.
-
Just tried set 1. That is a much faster paced game. Very fun. 6660(http://img.tapatalk.com/d/14/05/04/abuqujuh.jpg) in that one.

set 2: 17,540

Ignore the 5,720 score. I achieved that when I used to be better. Now I'm worse.

Seeing as how archive.org has blatantly had a complete set of .149 ROMs available for months despite all the wailing and gnashing of teeth, perhaps that would be a good common denominator in these competitions?
:dunno

You can't link to rom sites. Your going to get this sent post hell.

I guess 5710 is the best im gonna pull for this one. I cant take this game anymore. Too much rage

I think that whichever set or combination were picked for this round, Popsicle is the winner, kixfan is second. Does that look correct?
