Title: Arcade Sign - Hobby Lobby
Post by: wp34 on April 14, 2014, 12:35:35 pm
My wife picked this metal "Arcade" sign up for our basement hallway last week.  It was on sale at Hobby Lobby for $17.   The sale is off now but you should be able to use a 40% off coupon if you are interested.  It looks better in person.

Thought of the day: drill out some holes, put in some LEDs or pinball light bulbs.

This sign came up on KLOV a while back, and someone did that very thing. Looked good.

I missed that on KLOV.  Adding LED's would be sweet.

I'll be darned!  I've had this in my watch list on Ebay for months!  Almost thought of buying one and glad I didn't do it yet!  Hobby Lobby is in the next town and take a look at what you might pay on Ebay!

How attached is everybody to the fact that it's metal?  I have one and if you want one pointing the otherway I can do some high res scans on it and photoshop the flip.  I'd make both available so you could do whatever.

I'm thinking about doing a LED mod to mine but kinda want it to be double sided like a theatre marquee but don't know where I'd stick it.

Any interest?

Yup... I picked one up about a month or two ago as well. It's a cute sign and I was contemplating putting LEDs in it, but right now that's just more work than I have time for. My problem is that the arrow is pointing the wrong direction. I cannot find any good place to put it.

Looks pretty cheap to me.  Any one of us could recreate that thing with a jigsaw, scrap of wood, and rattle can.  It'd look more authentic that way, too.

I'd like to see you do this with just the materials you mentioned. I think you'd be hard pressed actually making it look better than this sign with a bit of scrap and one can of spray paint.

Now that's someone that knows their father... I got a tie that I will never wear. No seriously though. Got to spend the day with my two favorite girls.

Good times were had.  I'm surprised that my youngest kept a secret for 3 weeks.

Still shows up as $17.49 on sale on the website if you don't have a local place that stocks them. $6.95 shipping with that, $25 not a terrible price and it's a nice metal sign.

Just received mine today....thanks for the heads up.

One question for others that have theirs.  I know it is supposed to look distressed and rusted, but did anyone else have an X scratch mark in theirs?  Appears to be 3/4 of the length of the sign.   It doesn't look like it fits the theme and is faint but noticeable.  Upon further investigation, the plastic wrap it came in also has an X mark through it.  Not on the card board underside but the top side.   Bubble wrapping and packaging was great.  I know I didn't scratch it because I used my hands to open the cardboard box and to tear the bubble wrap....no knife on my end.

I'm thinking someone used a box cutter on it accidentally...figured maybe mine was the top one of the stack and someone used the knife to get rid of the packaging holding them together.

Just wondering if anyone else has this on theirs, if its meant to be there than I will live with it, otherwise I guess I need to send it back since it is noticeable and out of place in my eyes.

Thanks for any answers.
Peja

edited for grammar....man that was bad.

This is just about right.  It's thin stamped metal with some paint on it.  For $17, though, that's short money vs the amount of time it would take to make.

I'm actually impressed with the sign.  I know it isn't authentic or vintage but the paint on it actually looks nice and the fake rust is a nice touch.  I was pleasantly surprised.

While yes it is cheap, I would find it tough to replicate and get it to look like that without spending much more time than it is worth like you said ChadTower.

Well, to pinballjim's point, this is not what arcade signs looked like.  Most of them were hand cut and hand painted with artwork much simpler than this thing.

You guys are seriously selling your abilities short around here.  I'm all for homemade, I'm all for vintage, and I'll all for modern.  I'm not for cheap modern made to look fake vintage.  Leave that crap back at TGI Friday's where it belongs.

Enjoy your signs.

From what I remember of the Nickelodeon in Des Moines the outside sign was somewhat reminiscent of the Hobby Lobby sign.   It had small yellow dots around the perimeter or the sign.  This is from memory though.  This is one time I wish we had cell phone cameras back in the day.  I would love to have some pictures of my old arcade haunts.
