Title: Speaker Sound Controls
Post by: MamedInCanada on April 11, 2014, 09:12:55 pm
I have a Logitech 5.1 Speaker System, the volume control is on one of the speakers. I would like to put the system in my MAME cabinet, but control the volume by a knob say in the center or left side of the speaker grill.

Any ideas?

I'm lost, can I extend the volume control to a potentmeter? Dismantle speaker and put circuit board behind grill? Can I buy a volume control and have the speaker set connect to it then to computer?

Thanks

Take apart the speaker with the volume.  Odds are, it's already a potentiometer that can be unsoldered and have extension wires soldered to it to allow you to position where ever you want.

Simplest way is to use an inline volume control like this between the computer and the speaker amp.

You can also just hack a potentiometer into the audio cable (before the amp).
There are instructions on here somewhere if you search for them.
For the price, I'd just buy the premade thing.

Going this route, you just leave the original speaker control turned on and turned up.
If everything in your cab is controlled by a smart power strip, that will cut power to the speakers when the pc is turned off.

...or you can just use a software controlled volume program and assign a "shift" button for volume up and down.

CabVol is a good one written by the forum user DaOldMan. You can use the joystick and a hot key to lower/raise the volume.

I took apart the speaker and made a simple extention to the knob.

Just throwing in my 2c...

Similar to CabVol, you can use buttons if you're using a Minipac and assign +/-.

If you're set on using a pot, then as has been said, just extend the wire.

UPDATE:
I purchased the Logitech X-540 since it had a seperate control, removed speakers for front, center, and rear; filled in the old speaker holes, paint, drilled new holes, mounted the controller in the center for easy access, looks good...and thanks again for the ideas!
