I'm looking it different LCD monitors for a brand new cocktail cabinet build.
I've got a few LCD/LED monitors in mind. All of the ones I am looking at have a viewing angle of 160°.
They way the table is setup, the players will be at the right and left edge of the monitor.
Will this be enough of a viewing angle?
I'd like to hear from someone who has gotten an LCD, and what model they used so I can compare specs.
-
Are you buying new or used? 16:10 or 16:9?
It seems like it would be easy enough to go and search amazon for 23 LCD monitors. That is kinda wrong, but newegg.com seems to be a little better about posting specs than amazon unless it is part of a graphic advertisement.

I bought this 27" EOC monitor with thoughts of using it in a cocktail cab since it lists the viewing angle as 178°.

I wasn't happy at all with how it looked in testing when it was lying flat and I was sitting next to it like I would be in a cocktail cab so I just use it as a gaming monitor now. Not sure if there are other models that would work better or if you just have to be willing to live with a less than perfect image quality if you're going to go the LCD route in a cocktail cab. Maybe I'm spoiled from my arcade monitor.

Are you using the picture boost function?
If nothing else, you'll have nice monitor for your desk.

Just get a Dell UltraSharp 2001FP 20.1" LCD Monitor. You won't regret it.
-
I'm hoping to go bigger than 20". I'd like to get this biggest possible monitor that will fit in the cocktail cabinet.
Its going in a VA hospital, and they're eyes aren't as young as they used to be.

This is your destiny! VA LED monitors by BENQ

Trust me, 4:3 20 inches with a great viewing angle is a million times bettern that 16:9 23 inches with a ---smurfy--- angle. The Dell 2001FP is BYOAC tested, BYOAC approved.

Yup. It's all about the viewing angle. Dell 2001FP all day long.

OK, I'll take that into consideration, and I'll probably go that route. That'll give me some more room for artwork too.

Suggestions on where to buy at a good price? Newegg doesn't sell Dell monitors.

Dell refurb has a "store" on ebay they come up from time to time, like yesterday. Or try amazon.

refurbbed would be nice, and hopefully cheaper!

Make sure you check out the viewing angles first. The 2001FP is verified to be good. Anything else, you'll need to see it in action.
-
Stay away from the widescreen, man. You're going to have a long skinny slot, unused real estate or a stretched picture.... We're speaking from experience. I've used TWO 2001FP's in my own cocktail builds, a friend of mine who got a HaRuCoCkTaIL last week just bid on a 2001FP on eBay... It's verified stuff. I mean, :dunno
-
I missed the fact that the 2001FP is not widescreen. Thanks for catching that!

Yep, I've got all the setting tweaked. Overall I like the monitor, it's great for PC gaming and you can't beat the price but the picture quality while laying flat sucks. I'll have to check out the 2001FP. The reason I considered a 16:9 for a cocktail build is that I was thinking of making it tilt up to a 45 degree angle (using linear actuators) to play fighting games from controls mounted on the side. Still think having used my arcade monitor for so long has jaded my view of LCD's.
-
Hey, how are you guys mounting this? I see the buttons are on the face, not around the edge. Are you guys decasing the monitor?
-
No. I put cork tabs I picked up at Home Depot around the face of the monitor to provide enough space and pad the monitor before I bolt it into place.
-
Do you ever trouble with the monitor not turning on, and you need to access the power button, or other buttons for some reason?
-
No, it's one of those "always on" types that once you turn it on, it goes back on when power is reapplied. No issues.
-
OK, sounds good then. I was worried there'd be a need to occassionally get to the "auto" button something like that.

Is this a Dell 2001FP?

Looks like it. I'd use one of those in a cabinet as opposed to a 16:9 every time.
-
I was worried about the viewing angle if it weren't the right monitor.
THe stand and the number of buttons on the bezel indicate a 2001FP to me!

Scored an FP2001 for $40 off craigslist! Woot!!!
