I've tried several versions of MAME and several versions of the rom but still get this error:
50xx.bin NOT FOUND
51xx.bin NOT FOUND
54xx.bin NOT FOUND
ERROR: required files are missing, the game cannot be run.
Any tips? I'm running Mame v0.148 compiled with hiscore diff.

Sarcastic answer: Find a version of the rom that has 50xx.bin, 51xx.bin, and 54xx.bin
Non-sarcastic answer: Make sure the version of your rom corresponds with the version of MAME you are running. If you plan on using MAME 0.148 you need to make sure the Xevious version you have is from the 0.148 romset.

Are you sure you have the right version ROM?
From the Xevious entry in the .DAT file.
WIP:
- 0.152: Kevin Eshbach added rom locations for clone Battles.
- 0.148: Corrected the rom names and locations for clone Xevios. Added the PAL dump for the Xevious bootleg and marked the game as wrong sound because it does not use any of Namco custom MCU's but instead a 4th Z80 [Kevin Eshbach].

As a followup, MAME can be finicky regarding roms since they are constantly striving for accuracy and any time a specific rom is updated, the old version typically doesn't work with newer versions of MAME.
You can use software like Clrmamepro to audit your romset to verify that your set will work with a given version of MAME.

I've tried several roms from several sources - none work with the latest .152 either.
How does one go about making roms compatible? How can you tell what version MAME a rom is built for? I tried to figure it out with Clrmamepro but was unsuccessful.

Those are the Namco.bin files and with newer versions are located in different folders so you will need to find Namcoxx.zips for them (ie Namco50.zip, namco51.zip,namco52.zip, namco53.zip, namco54.zip, namco62.zip ) and place them in your roms folder -- Many of the NAMCO games will have the same problem (ie. Dig Dug, Galaxian)

Ah - that would make sense. Thanks, JDFan!

No problem - I had the same thing happen moving from 0.139 to 0.149 awhile back - just download those files and it'll fix them up. If for some reason you can't find the files PM me and I'll send you a copy of them.

I had this exact problem with my MAME Xevious. The simple fix is to go to your Bosconian ROM and copy the files 50xx.bin, 51xx.bin and 54xx.bin into your Xevious ROM. (You may have to extract any zipped files first of course.)
You could get these files from other ROMs, but I happen to know that all three are in the bosco (Bosconian) zipped folder.
Easy as pistachio pudding!
