I hooked up an original Williams coin door that has 2 coin slots - I can't recall back in the day what is the normal behaivor for inserting quarters.
I have the thought in my mind that depending whether you have 1 or 2 players, each will have their own side in which they put their quarter(s) in to start a "Credit".
On some MAME titles, if I plunked down a quarter in "Player 2"'s coin slot, a credit doesn't register - I assume it's because the game is designed for 1 Player only and it only accepts and registers based on player 1 coin slot (whichever it's assigned to).
So a bit confused.
Thoughts?
Thanks

As you suspect, it depends on the game.
Pull up the "Input (this Game)" menu and check which inputs are available for each game.
Galaga has Coin 1 (5) and Coin 2 (6) inputs -- works fine, nothing to fix.
Donkey Kong only has a Coin 1 (5) input -- Coin 2 (6) won't be recognized unless you add it as an alternate keystroke for triggering Coin 1.
*Highlight Coin 1
*Press Enter
*Press 5 or drop a coin into slot 1
*Press Enter again
*Press 6 or drop a coin into slot 2
The Coin 1 input should now read "5 or 6".

THANKS! Makes sense now. I guess I'll have to determine which titles I will need to do such reconfiguration.
For most part, I don't even use quarters - I just press the appropriate buttons to act as coin 1 - credit, but I guess it's more to charge any guests that might come and play with my cab :)

Just put a "NO REFUNDS" sign on your door. Problem solved.

A lot of games also allow you to change the coin slot behavior either via DIP switches or the operator menu (default F2 in MAME). Depending on the game, you might be able to choose how many credits each slot is worth and whether or not the players share credits.
See attachments for examples.

I'm confused - is a 2 player coin button even necessary on a Mame machine, short of authenticity?

Yes. Some games require specific credit slots for players. i.e. Ninja Turtles, Gauntlet, etc.
Gauntlet for example: If you put it in player 1 slot you will begin as the Warrior.

Ah well fair enough. Does that mean tho that you need player 3 and 4 for other characters? (My gauntlet knowledge is limited but aren't there 3 characters?)

4 characters - Warrior, Valkyrie, Wizard, and Elf (P1-P4, respectively)
The 2-player version (gauntlet2p) allows you to select which one you want to be -- 2 coin slots/buttons, start is player button 2 by default.

Well as long as I'm not losing out on characters in those other games!
-
same goes for the Simpsons
Dedicated Coin Slot to start a certain player but there is a 2 player version which you select character you want to play (Also game Sunset Rider) and many more.....
-
My cab is for 2 players only - do you think I'll be ok with just the one coin button then, and perhaps a Shift option for any occasion where I might need a 2nd?

I'd recommend 2 coin slots/buttons and 2 start buttons so you're covered for all 2-player games and the 2-player versions of the 4-player games. YMMV.
For some 2-player games like Donkey Kong you may want both coin slot keystrokes mapped to the same MAME input since there is no "Coin 2" in the "Input (this Game)" menu.
Press Enter, Esc to clear the input, then press Enter, 5 (Coin 1), Enter, 6 (Coin 2) so MAME will recognize a token dropped in either coin slot. ;D
If you add USB ports for gamepads, you can use them for P3 and P4, should a 3/4-player opportunity arise.
