Title: Sega Model 2 & 3 in 31khz
Post by: Monkee on March 16, 2014, 06:28:52 pm
Hi guys, I know it's not about groovymame by itself but the pixel perfect experts are around so...  ;D
I'd like to know if someone tried the Sega Model 2 & 3 emulators in 31khz and if it's as good as playing it in 24khz or if it's essential to get a 24Khz capable monitor for those ones?

Thanks.

Of course using 31 kHz for "EGA" games won't be as good as playing them at 24 kHz, but definitely better than using 15 kHz. By essential, that depends on how essential these games are for you. I've seen them on 24 kHz and they look awesome, but they're not my favourite games. If you're considering buying a tri-sync monitor for this, well... After trying a tri-sync, I think I prefer a robust 15 kHz fixed synced monitor than a tri-sync.

Thanks Calamity, but I have to admit that I don't really understand why the 24khz will be better? If it's rendered by emulators to 31khz, then the image quality should be even better than with 24khz, no?  :dunno
Clearly 15khz games and pixel art are apart, but for 3D games?

I have to find a great 31Khz PC CRT monitor to try rendering high resolutions for emulated 3D games on a CRT, I guess it should be even better than playing with the original resolution, no? (If you think about the HD "remake" of Zelda WindWaker for the WiiU for example.)

P.S.: You're not the first one to say that he prefers a good 15khz fixed display over a tri-sync but is it true even when you consider the best tri-sync screens like a Sega New Net City (with the Toshiba PF), a Sega Blast City (with the Nanao MS2930/31) or a 29" NEC MultiSync CRT?

The emulators you're talking about aren't pixel perfect, am I right? I.e. they render polygons at your display resolution, not the original game resolution.

If so, the polygon bits and textures will look better on 31k, but the 2D assets won't.

Thanks cools, that's exactly what I was wondering about. No idea about pixel perfect for those systems, I didn't try them yet.

But that's more the general idea of better 3D with higher resolution rendering that I was wondering about.
For example you can see Gamecube games rendered at 1080p on flat screen and it looks quite gorgeous but I'd love to see the same thing on a good HDCRT and I'm pretty sure it blows away the original resolution. No idea about other possible (bad?) impacts on the fidelity of the emulation though...
But if the emulation stays authentic (as much as it is on those pretty new systems), then it will be even better to play on emulators than on the original hardware!  :D
