Title: Monitor Question
Post by: brained on March 14, 2014, 03:10:19 pm
I finally found an arcade monitor for my MAME machine, but now I'm having second thoughts about making the purchase and I would like your advice.

I basically use the machine with MAME and sometimes my wife goes with ZSNES. The cabinet has a 21" crt pc monitor in the cab. The thing is I would enjoy having a 25" arcade monitor in the cab, but as far as I'm reading its kinda painful to work other things beside MAME to display in the monitor. My questions are:

Can I use other Emu's or windows using an arcade monitor?
Should I just get a bigger LCD and forget that option?
Should I get a used crt TV instead?
Just keep my 21 " crt ?

Your advice will be appreciated.

Buy an ArcadeVGA video card for your computer and the arcade monitor will be easy to hook up :)

As far as I know, with that card all programs work just fine, not only MAME.

Some new arcade monitors have VGA so you might not even need it.

Post the model number of the arcade monitor you intend to buy.

You'll get more flexibility out of CRT_Emudriver and a compatible graphics card, and for less money.  If you're going through the trouble of using a proper CRT, you should be using GroovyMAME, which is designed for CRT_Emudriver, to use it to its full potential.

Also, a CRT TV can rival the quality of an arcade monitor if setup correctly.  See the link in my signature.

Either video card option will work with either display option.
