UK retro game developer, Ray Norrish, is in great need of play testers to help finalize
Refender- The Defender Remake.
http://norrish.force9.co.uk/refender/ (http://norrish.force9.co.uk/refender/)
It's a beautiful and exciting rendering of Defender, which holds very true to its' roots.
Much like Ray's past work with Mechatron: 2154, being the retro successor to Robotron: 2084.
It's a free game and quick download, keys are fully mappable.
It supports being in a stand-alone arcade cabinet.
And it isn't going to get finalized unless players put more time into finding any last minute bugs/glitches/issues.
Ray's contact info is listed on his site. When reporting please be precise in explanation of the problem and include your Operating System details.
Cheers and Thank you!

Interesting that there are no screenshots. I couldn't find them anyway.

yes, youtube search for refender then look for Ray Norrish entries, be aware of the various versions as features kept getting added.
this was last version, 5. refender U5 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EeyOiRx7wqQ#)
This game is still in development, you will be blown away with the beauty.

Still looking for folks to try out Refender!
Here is a current vid of the latest build played by one of the world's
top Extreme-Masters of Defender.

The same guy who recently played a 100 hour game of Stargate in MAME to confirm
Larry DeMar's assumption that the game has an "extra life bonanza" the same as Defender and Robotron.

Definitely a fun game. ;D
One configuration note -- the program does not appear to recognize L-Alt (MAME P1B2 default) as thrust during game play even though the config program accepts the keystroke so plan your button layout accordingly.
Here's what I'm using YMMV.
Joy up - up
Joy down - down
Joy right - reverse
P1B1 - hyperspace
P1B4 - smart bomb
P1B5 - thrust
P1B6 - fire

Outstanding! Gameplay seems perfect (so far) on my cab under Windows 8.1--right down to doing 4:3 AR natively. This is a blast and captures the classic Defender feel with modern graphics. Sure wish there were more native Windows, perfectly cab-friendly titles like this (In fact, I don't think I know of *any* others--Taito Type X probably comes the closest). Only thing I've run into are that it only recognizes one of my cab's three USB Ultrasticks--no problem, I just use joytokey on the one I want to use.
Alas! Mechatron doesn't work at all on my machine (screen just flashes).

Hello everyone, I'm new to this arcade forum.
And a message for the Mod, sorry if I posted this message since it's been 120 days since it's not been posted in, but I do hope you keep it, in case original posters still have reply notifications ;) please consider, thank you!
I can't believe I missed this great remake of Defender, but life stuff does take us away from what we enjoy. The graphics, sounds and just about everything else look incredible, from the game play that I saw on YouTube, the "Refender" game looks amazing, just too real to be true! Great work 1500points, my hat off to you. :notworthy: I've searched all over and don't see the game, was it ever release for production? Any news concerning Refender? Is it possible to download the game?
