Title: Show us your OLD cabs that are still going strong....
Post by: IG-88 on March 02, 2014, 07:14:38 pm
In a recent post with Menace we were discussing an old bartop that he built WAY back in '04. I wanted to know if he still had it or what it's fate was. You can see that here:

http://tinyurl.com/lv9gxgv (http://tinyurl.com/lv9gxgv)

I have one that I built almost 8yrs ago that is still going strong today. Which is honestly surprising to me (that it still works and that I still have it). And that got me to wondering if any other people had some old machines that they are still clinging too. If you do I would love to see and hear about them. Please post them here!

Here is mine: It was the very 1st machine I built and was obviously a learning process. Most of it was free. I just bought a joystick, buttons Tmold and an encoder IIRC. While not very pretty, I was proud of it and my family and I have had many hours of fun with it.

The specs are

300mhz cpu
64mb ram
DOS mame with Game Launcher as an FE
13" PC CRT de-cased
PC speakers de-cased
Scrap plywood and fiberboard for the "shell"
Paint and $5 worth of Husker stickers that were laying in a drawer.

Anybody else care to chime in?

I lived in Omaha for about 2.5 years.  The local news is crazy about Husker football.  That is a lot of stickers for $5.

$5 is the bare minimum to avoid getting CrapMAMEd.

Lincoln.

And yes, should probably be a crap mame cab, but everyone who comes over and plays it loves it. Built a couple for others, with a little more "taste" and 'style" later on. Remember it was my first one!

@ Malenko, post it! Give us a story about it too!

2001 for my cab, although it's gone through changes over the years (swappable -> modular, artwork)

Going through another (painful) change today with it!  Upgrading the computer, not fun especially w/ Windows 8 and UEFI.        :hissy:

In the end, it is *all* worth it.   :)

All the details about the cab are in my signature.

Started this in 2003 (or 2004?). Seem to remember putting the sideart on in 2007 and that was it basically finished. However it took me until late 2012 to finish the artwork for 3 out of the 4 control panels...

This pic is fairly recent but I have since painted the speaker panel with satin paint (instead of gloss), and replaced the start buttons with black ones. The coin door is gloss which I would like to sort out at some point.

Apart from replacing a microswitch on one of the joysticks the machine hasn't missed a beat!  :)

Not built, more like assembled.  This is my Pro Play home arcade cabinet that I've had since 1988.  It's sitting next to my Mini Williams in my post above.  These pics are from the late 90's with it sitting alongside my first MAME cabinet, which was the LuSid design.  The ProPlay houses a 20" Wards TV and original NES.  My kids like to play Duck Hunt on it.  I still have the original side art that I never installed.

Ya, I was thinking more along the lines of scratch built machines. Especially the hardware aspects of it. It never ceases to amaze me how this electronic stuff can still function after the abuse it's had. Most of my stuff has come to me used already and then I get a-hold of it...  ::)

Scratch built but loosely based on the RoadBlasters (System 1) cabinet.

I haven't seen that cab in ages, not since Toys R Us had an end cap display of it. All the gamer kids in school saw the same cab, a few claimed to have a relative own one, but no one ever bought it. I think TRU even dropped the price down to some ridiculous amount and no one I knew ever bought it. I assumed the bulk of them got scrapped or something.

Yep, that's where mine came from.  It was one of two they still had on clearance at the time.  The other one oddly enough is in basement of my best friends house next to the Mini Williams I built him.  Paid $59 each for them.
