I'm looking for some hints on where to get started.
Parameters
I have a project of digitizing a register of over 85,119 things with with several attributes.
1 of 2 particular attributes
1 of 100 or more attributes,
1 to 53 or more attributes,
1 to 55 or or more attributes,
1 to 260 or more attributes,
1 to 18 or or more attributes, made of 1 to 6 or more attributes that have 3 subsets unique to them.
For one or more durations of time,
within periods of time,
during time
8 digit number
9 digit number
Background:
I read about a book about rational databases. I've heard XML is where it is at. I think I'll need mysql. Can anyone point me somewhere to start? Hardware? Primers, white pages, books? I failed miserably at access and I can't use excel to do anything but sum a column and look exactly like I want it to. Thanks.
The most unique computer things I have done were slipstreaming XP cds so I wouldn't have to download drivers each time. Compile MAME
run an apache server on my 3rd generation ipod to share files to share on a corporate network. I only mention that because with the exception of the slipstreaming (easy interface) the others were up hill climbs.

You could get a way with using Access 2003+, but I would look at using MySQL.
As long as your images are low res I'm sure Access will be your huckleberry.
Heck you could write an app in C sharp for the front end.

Congrats to you if you can find a copy of 2003. I had a heluva time finding 2010. But yes Access is a neat little program. I would try to find something comparable that is free.

Free to me (including Access 2012) with my MSDNAA account. If my memory is right TinyXP has Access 2003 as a plug-in. But I didn't say that. ;D
You can try the 1 month trial (http://office.microsoft.com/en-gb/free-trial-try-microsoft-office-2013-and-office-365-products-FX102858196.aspx?WT%2Eintid1=ODC_ENGB_FX010048757_XT103927624) to see if Access fits the bill.

was replying when my laptop overheated. Pearls of wisdom are lost in limbo.
Anyway. I'm gonna go ahead and give Access a shot. I can truncate the project by reducing one of the variables to one.
Coincidentally, that is one of my midpoint goals anyway.
I have access to Access.
