Post by: s8n187 on February 23, 2014, 05:49:02 pm
hi members ,  i interested in the EMS Top Gun 3 for use on my Astro City running Time Crisis 1 through MAME...................

ive seen a Youtube video on the Ultimarc AimTrak Light Gun and accuracy wise it looks terrible

AimTrak Chapter 3 Accuracy (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CJM1Xq9ZFog#)

ive also seen the Act Labs USB Light Gun and it looks quite good but the VGA Box isnt available anymore ,  other than that ive been looking at the EMS Top Gun 3 and was wondering what people thought of it or have any experience with it

btw if theres any other Light Guns out there let me know so i can look them up

That video is grossly incorrect.  The reality is:  Once you move from the original calibration point the laser naturally seems off.  This exact topic has been discussed here:

Also, some Google-Fu led me to these negative issues with the EMS TopGun 3s:

Also there is a required distance from the screen, projection, LCD for better accuracy. Its fiddly until you have it working to satisfaction.

FWIW, many will say the EMS Topgun sucks and I am not here to argue that. I bought one when I first built my cab because I got it really cheap and I wasn't sure if I really wanted a light gun.

Anyway, once I got the drivers figured out (Win7 64bit driver signing issues), it has been working great for me. I like it for what it is, and I am able to play many of the light gun games with it without trouble. The aimtraks are better by what I have been told, but the EMS will work with a little patience and reading.

Been using mine for over a year now and I have no plans on replacing it right now. If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

thanks for the replies ,  going by what DeLuSioNal29 has said that Youtube video is really misleading................the Aim-Trak seems ok and im leaning towards it

i took some measurements of the space i have and just standing i have 4ft ,  with my arms aiming at the screen i have just under 3ft............will this be sufficient ?  or will i have to make some changes and move some stuff around to get further away from the Astro City's monitor ?

also the lit up part above the Astro's monitor will that interfere with the Aim-Trak ?................i read that it will with the EMS Top Gun 3

Thats correct, the instructions for the Aimtrak clearly state that the gun will lose accuracy if the player moves to a different firing height unless re-calibrated.
The video actually makes the problem appear worse because the gun constantly re-learns its location and applies correction, but in order to prevent jumping, the correction is remembered and only applied when the gun is pointed off-screen. In the video he moves around the room while still aiming at the screen so the gun does not have an opportunity to apply any correction.

As always, taping a wide angle lens to the front of the Top Gun improves accuracy and reduces needed distance.

Yup, agreed, I am new to CP building, and I have had a few problems, Andy has answer all questions I have had for him very quickly.  Currently I am in a CP layout test, while I finalize plans for my full cab, and I will absolutely order remaining parts from Andy, service is excellent, quality is very good (granted I don't have a lot to compare to, but I am pleased with everything - well except my button layout, but that isn't on Andy).
