Title: monitor size
Post by: jordanshadow on February 13, 2014, 03:00:27 pm
So I have decided on a tv for my standup machine. There are a couple local trinitron monitors available. 24" and 27" both flat screen with component and s-video, in excellent shape. I also already have a 21" crt monitor with an excellent picture.

So for those that have experienced it, what is the sweet spot for monitor size. The cabinet will be two player so there needs to be enough room in the design to accommodate that with good viewing. I would think the 21" crt would be too small. 27" will definitely necessitate a larger cabinet. I dunno any opinions?

Bigger is better.

Bigger is better.
I though size doesn't matter!  :-[

if u are standing close to the screen, 19"-21" is about right in my opinion
usually bigger monitors are found in cabs where u stand back, eg light gun cabinets

I've had several cabs with different sized monitors and 25 is definately the sweet spot. Gives you a decent size on vertical games too.

Comes down to what you prefer tho. Try them out. Maybe the picture quality stands out on one screen more than the others.

Purely my opinion but I would go with the 24 if you are going to mount it vertical, 27 horizontal.

Went ahead and got the 27". I think it was the right choice but time will tell. Thanks for all your input. I will be putting up a project announcement soon.

the big sonys may be a reasonable choice for tv purpose , but i would never take one of the 27 ( 29 inch ) for a lowres arcade monitor .  lowres monsterscreen arcade on armlength sucks ass . the other downside of trinis is their weight and the sony specific shape of the tube . i once grabbed a sony 29x5d in good conditon with a wonderful picture . it really was a nice 50-60 hertz tv or for console gaming on 2-3 m distance . but i had no use for that , so i gutted it and replaced the chassis of a broken 25x5d , which is still running in my ok baby candy cab .  i prefer 14 - 21 inch vertical and 20-25 inch horizontal . 27/29 inch only vga mode horizontal to replace broken candycab screens .  one of my 3 naomis is orientated vertical for vga shooters . even its a very decent screen the size is a pain in da ass . if i could get a 25 inch bezel the 29 inch would go right out of the window . people with egret or astros playing lowres vertical make me laugh . if something looks like shi_  and feels like shi_ it maybe is shi_ .

i always wonder whats wrong with u us guys and ur bigger is better stuff ..

I guess it is a matter of opinion.  I  have a 27/29 in my cab and I love it.  Haven't had any complaints from guests either.  My next cab is going to be a vertical and I definitely wouldn't go with a monitor that size but a 24 inch did seem to fit the build nicely.

I think 25 is about the best size. I have a 27" tri-sync in my vertical and its fine. It was what I had for a monitor so its what I used.
Most of the vertical game resolution don't fit the screen so its fine. but it also works nice for the horizontal games to be about 19" in size.

I'd go with the 21" CRT monitor because of clarity of image, and potential for playing high resolution games.   PC CRT is RGB like an arcade monitor, and unless you are going to go with rgb > component transcoding it will look the most arcade-like imo.
