Here is a list of vertical shooter games in MAME: http://www.mamedb.com/category/Shooter/Flying+Vertical (http://www.mamedb.com/category/Shooter/Flying+Vertical)
Note that it is not filtered on space theme, but- if you're talking about a vertical scrolling shooter, good chance it's in that list.

I love playing guess the game as much as the next guy but need a few more details than space and vertical.

Did it have missile lock feature?

Time travel?

Lots of ship choices?

Fever SOS
Nostrodamus
Final Star Force (you may hate it, but I love the level up weapons)
Explosive Breaker (for the sheer ridiculousness)

Now those are only some of the space themed ones I like, obviously with the SHMUP genre being so broad there are plenty more to discuss. See Badmouth's link, thats a good thread and has a very nice list.

Personal favourite with a strong 'Space' theme is Viper Phase 1.

Getting back to the subject, how about these?

Lifeforce
Battle Garegga
Raiden series (not space technically, but some levels are)
Aero fighters (same as above, but I think there is a space level)

Thanks I'll try those out.

So far, as far as vertical scrollers go, I am really enjoying "1944: The Loop Master".

1944 loop master is a great game (not space themed though)
I wish it was set up for a vertical monitor rather than being a vertical scroller on a horizontal monitor.

My favorite old school shmups are Lifeforce (side) and Awrofighters (top).
