Blown head gasket seems to be going around.  Just happened to my wifes Jeep.

white smoke is usually coolant, black smoke is usually oil.
I'd agree with a leaky head gasket assessment.

They can't replace the head gasket?  And hell for $4,000 you could probably find a comparable replacement.

If that ---meecrob--- Diesel didn't loose the Jobi wood it wouldn't be so expensive.

After building a simple bartop from scratch and cutting corners everywhere I could, I'd say $600-$1000 for a custom scratch build is a great deal.  Parts alone cost me about $150.  Then several days of labor, artwork, etc...  and mine kinda sucks.

My most recent one was a pacman cab.  It cost me around 300 bucks just in lumber.  I lucked out and got a pc for it for 70 bucks.  So that's 370 right there + another 30 for the control panel + 30 for paint, +side art (that I never have gotten around to creating), t-modling, misc electroinc bits, speakers + amp, coin door, ect, ect.....

So yeah 600-1000 is about right... unless you want them to build it for you for free or something.

I don't think I've had a single project that's cost me less than $500 in the end.  Even the embarrassing ones.

 :dunno

I feel like there was a time where we didn't make much of an issue of how much it cost build an arcade cabinet.  In general it was actively encouraged to find budget friendly ways to accomplish building an emulator cabinet.  Things have gotten much better over time.

We should call a spade a spade though.  Put a yellow caution sign out front and tell folks that while you can do this inexpensively, it is not cheap.

I've bought a router, table saw, was gifted a circular saw. I also purchased $50 in router bits, $35 and $25 saw blades.  Hole saws, fostner bits.  Even if you have access to that, you still have to buy wood.  +2 sheets of wood.  Even more for the few false starts I had.  Lots of wood.  Glue, screw, wood filler, paint. At this point, $1000 is starting to look generous.  We haven't started talking about the tool kit you'll build for the electronics.

That is why I think the fight stick is the best first project.  A person will learn a lot of lessons there.  They can reuse the parts and the experience on their bigger projects.

No worries, I got the Joke. That expression wasn't on your post, but for that listing for 1300 for that little bartop.

Don't forget the time. Even when you use complete off the shelf components there is still a measure of time invested and lost effort that might be utilized elsewhere. It's taken me months to write the firmware in my spare time (at work) when I probably could have shoehorned an existing solution in there for $60. Afterall only Ond has a legion of evil clones doing his bidding.
