Title: Upgrading from 4850 to 4890 worth it?
Post by: chromium on February 12, 2014, 04:06:31 pm
Set up GroovyMame and crt_emudriver with an HD4850, just wondering if there is much point upgrading to a 4890. I have a 5870 but obviously that doesn't work with crt_emudriver.

In my opinion, no point what so ever..
Unless you're wanting to play modern PC games on there as well.. but i doubt that..
Also the faster the GPU, the more heat is generated, which isn't good for Arcade cabinets.

So a 4850 is good enough for all mame games that utilise 3D hardware acceleration?

MAME games don't use 3D acceleration unless you enable HLSL.

Ok, so is it worth upgrading from a 4850 to 4890 for hlsl? :)

Why using HLSL and a HD4xxx? The HD4xxx are only useful for CRT screens and HLSL for LCD/Plasma screens...
If you want to have a system that permit both technologies, I tried and it seems more problematic than anything else.
