A nice big box of goodies!

Just gotta grab some wood and get cutting!

Looks like a box from GGG. That never gets old.
-
As silly as it sounds, those button wrench things are worth their weight in gold.

I'll second that! I know I was excited when I got a similar package from GGG... Now I'm saying to myself... why did I get the LEDs! TOO MANY WIRES! haha

What type of wire do I need to successfully daisy chain the ground connector?

Check this out (http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php/topic,137537.msg1419081.html#msg1419081) Project Arcade. Yours for the cost of shipping according to the details.
I was going to get a second copy to lend out, put you'll like it.
-
Groovy. Are those Key Wiz or GP Wiz?
Asking because it's usually not that simple to use 2 key Wizzes since they use a PS2 connector and not all PS2 to USB adapters will work on them.

I think it's spoken for. Haven't been paid yet, but not going to sell it out from under the guy. You can be second in line if you want it.
It's a newer revised by BadMouth edition.

I'm pretty sure most people use 18 guage wire.
-
for daisy chaining the grounds to your switches, you may wanna use 22 gauge wire. you will need to have two wires in each crimp connection.
-
What type of wire do I need to successfully daisy chain the ground connector?
I think it was Knievel that recommended the solid strand doorbell wire from Home Depot (or similar).

It was indeed! Excellent call, btw.

It was a copy of Saint's book (Project Arcade) that I was giving away for free + shipping.
Hand edited by me to correct his orientation of P3 and P4 joysticks.
If you don't know what that's about, then don't build anything until you do.

It's spoken for now, so I deleted the pics. Not the best way to handle an item being sold, but oh well.

a lot of guys around here will recommend sold wire because its easy to make neat but I wouldn't take that advice.
first off, thin gauge solid wire will break easier if its often moved or flexed.
second, crimp connectors are meant for stranded cable. Its very likely to get bad connections if used with solid.
If its any easier, the daisy chain connectors you need are also available already made from most of the vendors.

The key words there being, "often moved or flexed". Once the CP is wired, there should be zero movement or flexing of the wiring. Also, I like to solder the wires to the lugs so the QD issue becomes moot. Granted though, in a public cabinet, that I expected to get abused I'd use stranded wire and QD's to make it easier to swap out parts.

Awkward.
I was linking to this book: http://www.amazon.com/Project-Arcade-Build-Your-Machine-ebook/dp/B004KAABVY/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1391484360&sr=8-1&keywords=project+arcade (http://www.amazon.com/Project-Arcade-Build-Your-Machine-ebook/dp/B004KAABVY/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1391484360&sr=8-1&keywords=project+arcade) It is worth a read even if you can't get it from Badmouth.

+1000 to mgb's post. :applaud:
There's a good reason why every arcade vendor I've seen uses stranded wire in their wiring harnesses and Atari used an even higher strand-count wire for the SW Yoke.
Prefab daisy chains FTW.
IF you decide to use solid core with QDs you may want to solder the wire to a hole in the QD for a solid electrical connection like Slippy mentioned and crimp the sleeve on the insulation for mechanical support.

And truthfully, stranded wire is neater looking.

Daisy Chain once, and you'll appreciate someone else doing it!
-
If you want to make the prefabs look neater (no left over QDs), use prefab daisy-chain (P) for all but the last connection (C) before a long run with nothing to ground.

Thanks guys!
Il check out that book too

Buy a cheap JAMMA harness on eBay and use those wires. Much, much easier and cheap, too.

another pic showing the intended layout. buttons are CLASSX with true leaf switches, happ competition sticks. I need some cardboard to actually lay it all out. does home depot sell large pieces of cardboard?

Huh. Pretty cool that the leaf switches are color-coordinated with the buttons. Didn't know they did that.
-
Umm . . . You thinking about the bottom half of the CLASSX buttons, Slippy?

stalking my photobucket? :D
Yes, PL1 is absolutely correct. I actually had to insert each leaf switch into each bottom half of the button and screw it in. I like that the piece comes off, should make assembling it into the control panel fairly easy.
-

Just clicked on the photo **that you hyperlinked to your PB account** to zoom in and see if Slippy was right. :lol
The clear answer was in the next photo. ;D
Scott

Yep, my bad. Since the switch bits were not assembled onto the buttons, I assumed they were a separate piece. Either way, kinda cool that they bottom parts of the buttons are matching colors versus just molding ALL the bottom bits from the same color plastic.

You don't even know how nice it is to have those leaf switches. It makes it so much easier for troubleshooting and working on your panel.

So this is where I am at...

to settle this once and for all:
Solid wire - for connecting things that don't move. for soldered connections. for neater appearance on point to point.
stranded wire - for things that move. for soldered or crimped connections. Messy appearance unless you're good with planning, have a million zip ties, or can loom it up nasa style.
I like the leaf buttons. Don't care for different colored players positions but to each their own.

If you really want to do it up old-school and fancy, use lacing cord (http://www.amazon.com/Waxed-Lacing-Cord-Spool-Black/dp/B005PQRLYC/) (a flat, waxed variety of string) tied with a series of running lock stitches as outlined here (http://firetrucksandequipment.tpub.com/TM-9-254/css/TM-9-254_188.htm).

So, I realized that the wire packs I bought with my GP-Wiz came with grounding cables. duh, I probably should have just looked....
Anyhow... latest update.
Can't really see, but I marked out all the spots for buttons/joysticks on the board...
