Hi, I'm sorry if this thread is not directly related to Groovymame but I thought it will probably be here that I'll get the best answers. :)
I know that using a LCD or Plasma for 15khz games is problematic because of the fix refresh rate, lag and absent scanlines but I'm wondering about the 31khz system? I'm planning to play some of them through emulation (Dreamcast, Naomi, Taito and Gamecube mainly) and I'm not sure about which monitor to buy between the Sony PGM (so CRT 31khz) and the Pioneer PDP-V402 (or V401) who are 40" 31khz 4/3 Plasmas without lag apparently. It could be really nice to use one of those to get a huge screen (and it's Tate capable!) but I'm afraid of the lack of variable refresh rate and the impact this can have on 31khz games.
Can someone help me to make the good decision?
Thanks,
Monkee

Hi Monkee,
I can only recommend you to make a research on the systems that you want to emulate. If they all work at 60 Hz then there's no reason to worry to much about the refresh of the display being fixed.
If I could get any of those I would go for the Sony.

Thank you Calamity. I did not found any real source for the refresh rate of those ones (especially if some games run at a different refresh or not), that's why I'm not really sure what to do...
If anyone can help me to find such things, I'm highly interested.

I'm still thinking about how to get the best out those 31khz games and it seems pretty easy and cheap to get some PC CRT 31Khz monitors.
They are not only made for 480p but also higher resolutions so I don't know what will be the result for the 480p consoles/arcades.
Does someone know how is the quality of 480p games on those monitors and had the chance to compare it with arcade 31khz monitors or 31khz Sony PVM/BVM/PGM?
Thanks a lot.

i tested several eizo pc crts ( f35 , f56-57, t67-68, f78 ) with vga input from dreamcast and xbox .. and they all did a wonderful job. for cabinet crt replacement i prefer crt tvs 21,25,28 and 29 inch with vga input ( less hazzle with monitor chassis ) . sometimes i choose dell lcds with 20 inch ips panel , like ultrasharp 2001 and 2007 . the 1600x1200 panel can handle vga very well. havnt tried a plasma yet , but i guess it would work fine .

Thanks apfelanni, what about the vsync missing with the lcd/plasma technology and their fixed ratio, is it a problem?

Edit: Ok I just found two CRT 31Khz to try the 31khz systems in both Tate and Yoko! :notworthy:
Does anyone know if I can get some pixel perfect with those systems and without a HD4xxx?
Thanks.
