Many moons ago I drew this up as a concept cabinet design idea for Comtek. I don't think he'd mind if I shared it. I don't think it's ever been built. I've always liked it, of course it could be modded or improved which is why I'm putting it out there. I have no immediate plan to build it, but hey, never say never right? I just like the curves and the top panel design - no T-moulding, just a thick rounded edge. If it gets some interest - I'll do the cutting plans. Since sketchup is so popular around here maybe a SKP file for folks to play with. The side design was originally to accommodate etched glass (Comtek's speciality). But the X design could be replaced etc ...
Thoughts? Ideas? let it fade into the never never? OR let's make it! ;D

I dunno if 2014 will be my year :dunno but I do know one thing - expect new things...Ond's gotta OND.

Neat share. I'd be interested in cutting plans.
-
Badass man!
-
I like it a lot. It hould be cheaper to build than a traditional cocktail because of the top. Also it looks much more modern. Very nice work as usual Ond.

Thanks fellas. Sometimes I can be a bit precious with a design, not so with this, I know its got potential. I've had my morning double espresso (woohooooo) and I'm ready to brainstorm it, concept it some more. Should I do a Pac-Man theme? Bold yellow and black? Or is Pac-Man done to death? I'd like to do a futuristic type tribute Pac-Man theme. Say its 2030 and we are still bloody playing Pac-Man, some new release version of it anyway. I know there's some new variant of the thing around now. Anyway, names:
I'm thinking of totally ripping off 'Pac To The Future' I dunno Disney and all that...It is a cool name for a cab though! :P

Journey. If I ever build a cocktail for shumping around it will be hard for me to not try a journey themed cocktail. Trick is making the art look right from either side.

OK. You got it. I'll do two themes.
1. Pac To The Future
2. Journey - Revelation
I'll take the Journey Logo and re-do it from scratch - it is VERY cool.

Killer design. I am interested in how you would go about tackling the joint at the bottom where the two curved flat pieces meet. That seems like an area that would take a bit of finesse to get right.
-
Awesome! :applaud:
-
So the wires are exposed underneath the control panel or is there a cover of some kind?
Nice design though! :applaud:

Here are the draft concept renders. I have made the base slightly narrower to allow space for players feet when seated at the cab. For the moment I've used low-res images off the net for art work, if the concept flies I can do custom hi-res versions. Artwork can be lit Marquee style from inside the cab.
@RabidRabit - The curved pieces would all be done with thin plywood sheet attached to (hardwood) plywood forms, I'll think more carefully on the woodwork details and joinery once I get the concept sorted.
@DeLuSioNal29 - The control panels are sealed underneath with curved plywood.

Very nice. One observation though. It doesn't look like there is enough clearance under the control panel top for the controls to be enclosed.
-
Wow. They both look great but that Journey render is amazing.
-
Haha!!!! That's sick! This design is hot, might have to finally build me an OND cab! I've got a 19" VGA CRT just itching to jump into that bad boy!
-
It looks awesome, however I have been doing this stuff for years and I would still question my own ability to build that and make it look anywhere near as good as your renderings.
-
I love it! :applaud:

I love the PAC theme! It fits the cab style so well.

This is encouraging feedback, I appreciate it! Some good questions raised as well. I'll paraphrase them below with some thoughts added:
1. Is there enough room for controls given the narrow looking CP edge? The top CP panel is quite thick, once rebated, controls should fit just fine in the space although it will be tight. The CP top panels would have to be removable for maintenance access which poses its own construction challenge.
2. The design could be a challenge to build and realize as per the renders, even for veteran cab builders. Agreed, however I'm firmly of the opinion that with well thought out build plans and a sound construction approach, the difficulty level could be reduced quite a bit. Curved shapes in timber, high gloss finishes, rounded off edges etc should not frighten away folks keen on the design. It's not for beginners or perhaps even intermediate woodworkers, but with the right tool-set, build plans and attitude I think its well within the reach of quite a few builders here.
So what's next? Before I do anything else, I'm going to build a quick full scale mock up from heavy (cardboard box) cardboard. It's all very well being juicy eye-candy, but if it breaks your back to play it it's all a bit pointless. I'm 6'1" and want to be comfy sitting on a stool playing the cab. It would be good if my kids using the same adjustable stool could also play it.
The side art, particularly the Pac To The Future theme needs improvement. I wouldn't mess too much with the Journey artwork, though, except to produce a high res version of same.
I like the wrap around surface around the controls, this could be a nice vinyl materiel to avoid that sweaty smeary affect you get around controls with a high gloss CP.

nice. ill keep my eyes on this one....

My head is full of ideas for stuff including this cab. Last year I had nuthin, go figure :dunno. New ideas also motivate me to get on with old projects. I get bored easy with just one thing.
-
Lord....
.....that is freaking gorgeous!!!
I would love the plans for that. I would take a shot on building it.
-
Been wanting to build a cocktail for a while now, but too many other projects at the moment. If I did have my go at it, I would have it stained with a walnut finish and maybe a couple sections lighter for a two-toned wood effect. No decals. And a smoked tempered glass top. Maybe some colored LEDs hidden so they shine over the controls. Would look like a contemporary piece of furniture that the wife wouldn't mind staying in the living room.
Omd, that is a really cool design. Definitely would consider that design when I go to build a cocktail.
-
Updated concept.
-
New here, and can't give too much feedback on design details, but I have to say both of those sketch-ups are absolutely freaking gorgeous!

Can the control panels slide into the cabinet when not in use?

I can't get that Damn "go go" song out of my head now. :banghead:

Wow cool! This is a great idea, I think I'll ditch the Pacman and Journey themes and spend a good part of today re-doing the design for a Wham! theme. Hmm let me see, black and white coloring...

If you could figure out a way to make those sides swappable, that would be awesome!

Somebody already made a Buck's Fizz cocktail here (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Buck%27s_Fizz_%28cocktail%29). ;D

Naw, Maximus is already doing that with his Pinball machine thingy. There's enough challenge in just making the design build-able, so no fold away CPs, rotating watchamagigits or swappable side panels. Well unless someone else wants to take the design and re-do with all that complexity. I'm gonna hunt around for some clean corrugate cardboard to prototype the overall dimensions. If it works I'll take another look at the structural approach.
Some of the best designs are relatively simple in terms of bells and whistles but have stand out design aesthetics coupled with functionality. I'm going to try and focus on achieving something original / different and attractive.
Heh, Buck's Fizz, Scott if I could rep you for that clever bit of linking, I would.
It's going to be about 100 degrees here today, I'm trying to get my family out the door to get them to the beach, our puppy is all bitey and impatient to get moving and the girls are screaming at each other over that their music is "too loud" . Just another day in paradise. :timebomb:

This one.. I MUST build this!!!
-
Yup, I dig it. I am starting a cocktail build in the next month or so. Looks like I found some inspiration!! Very cool.
-
Just started the Metropolis, will line this up for the cocktail follow up :-)
-
Slick looking design. I just have a couple of comments on the build/structure elements:
The interface between the panel supports and the body seems very difficult, and possibly a bit flimsy in the end. The way the supports line up, there's only one point where solid wood meets solid wood, and that one is directly in-line, meaning an "edge to edge" connection point (not very strong).
If I were to make a suggestion on the earlier design, it would be to make a cutout in the inner face piece, and incorporate as much of the panel support structure into the frame as is possible. Slots in the supports for the inner face piece could act as guides to create the curve, and the thinner sections would take the curve easier as well. The bottom could be finished with a narrow "kick" plate, up to the bottom of the supports. The later design looks like it would be nearly impossible for most to get a finish at anywhere near the quality of the rendering. It would take a lot of filling and sanding to make those kinds of transitions seamless (think custom car body modifications). And if one is going to go through all of that, the panel better not wiggle at all, as the fill material could crack or break out.
At some point, function has to take precedence over aesthetics. The coolest looking car ever isn't much use if it starts to go airborne at 50mph :). But with a few tweaks, I'm sure it could be easily buildable and very solid, while retaining most of the elements which give it the attractive appearance.

So close to starting a Bartop, and stuff like this comes along and.. back to the "what should i build". I must say the curved stuff isn't as scary as people think, depending on the wood you use.. I would use something quite thin, but then you risk the "angry" gamer kicking it in. I must admit a curve on a curve will be a challenge, i don't see any real problem otherwise. I was thinking much like Groovy, about the control panel.. depending on if you making the sides transparent or lit (glass etc?) the frame inside can deal with that.. it might be a little tight right on the narrowest point of the control panel, but some woodwork will deal with that. I suppose it would ruin it if you had a 1-2" square right under hte control it would ruin the curved look.
anybody does this, please point us ot the project thread.. I am very close.. but also building a new garage, so quite truthfully I think my time will be full.
-
I plan on starting this in the next month or so. 1/4" ply should be able to take that curve without too much trouble. Layer on two more layers and you have 3/4". Actually that's probably overkill if you have a good support structure. Two layers should be enough. For the top I'm thinking 3/4" ply with a 2x2 edge of poplar. That would make a nice thick edge to route the bullnose onto.

OND,
Very nice design!
Did you get a chance to make a carboard mock up?
Probably just check the hieght is simular to other tables and should be fine.
What program do you use for the drawings?
Love the Journey themed one.

Thanks Red, no cardboard mock-up as yet, life got super busy and I just had to put all personal projects on hold. I'm returning to give this some thought now though. I know Le Chuck has plans to build a version of this, this year. I will leave the Journey theme to him. I really like the idea of a modern version of a Pacman cocktail cabinet along the lines of the render. There's some new LCD monitor technology around now as well as new arcade control gear, that makes the timing for this perfect for a 2015 build. First and foremost I must progress my Retro-Futuristic cab build, but I will start a project thread for this on the mock-up kick-off. I use 3D Studio primarily for all design work because that's what I'm familiar with.
For those keen on this design and maybe thinking of building it, I'll say up front there will be some challenges ;). I love a challenge, all design aspects of this can be worked out fer sure ;D.
