Finally one I can play. Im not too late this time
-
This one's gonna have some crazy scores !! -- Only made it to stage 2 and scored 53,964,022,320 so can only imagine what the score's will be by the end of next week !
-
This game needs commas.
-
first 2 scores.
-
Been a while but I'll jump in on this one. First attempt:
55,433,905,940
-
Epetti, make sure you click the "Australian" option when you configure your profile.
This is a silly game and the levels are different based on your character selection.
-
Improved to 71,202,206,080. Died on the second boss with a stupid mistake. Apologies for the upside down pictures. For some reason my iPhone is attaching them that way.
-
This site lists some scores you should target, top score is 210'3453'6652'9280

Good luck :laugh2:

Yeah right. I got the lowest score so far. In my defense though I have a broken screen and can only see about 50 percent of it.
I will give it a shot on a different screen later today.

You've still got plenty of time to improve the scores - and even though it is a competition it is more just for fun trying different games you may not have played before and comparing how you do versus a few others so the more posted scores the better (since it keeps the thread visible for others to find it ! )

For a second I thought you overtook the high score until I looked at the commas. These scores are a pain to read.

For a second I thought you overtook the high score until I looked at the commas. These scores are a pain to read.
Aint that the truth -- I did notice that the color of the score changes on the hundred million mark so now I just look at it from there (ie. my score of 53,964,022,320 has the 539 in a different color so I just see it as 539 now so I can tell if it improved over my previous high )
-
Yes during game play but not at the end. And even that's bizarre. Would've made more sense at the million mark instead of ten million.
-
Yah, some of the first (far left) score numbers are yellow, but only during gameplay, not in the high score summary screen.
197,541,548,890.
Used P_____ character...the one with the little rockets.

Purple ship.

Ok, that sets a bar to beat. I'm using purple too. Inched my way up to 91 billion-ish, but far from the trillion mark.

554 zillion?

I'm playing the first character that looks like he's about to bomb Pearl Harbor.

Nice game! I always die with a bunch of unused bombs :(

Whoops :-[
Anyhow, this is my new hiscore: 272,660,174,870 I used the green ship, which shoots those rolling bombs.
-
Continuing with the purple ship and the upside down posts, died on third boss:
341,532,185,220
Have no idea how you got to 2 trillion, spoot. Any pointers?
-
Reflect bullets into enemies and collect the gold. The more you collect in a stage the more they are worth. And I did make it a ways into the game surprisingly. :o
-
New score: 643,804,638,830 this time I used the blue ship that shoots missiles.
-
Guess I need to get some more practice (didn't realize the 2nd stage boss was gonna shoot out a deadly beam and got caught in it as shown in the screenshot :badmood:) -- 194,766,707,830
-
Continuing with the blue Porkcha ship. I can't comprehend why anybody would ever choose anything but guided missiles on any game where one can use guided missiles. They're the coolest.
A little better: 222,569,362,830.
Oh, maybe that's why...I'm way behind the curve...
Tried pink guy with angled shots--not a fan. Order of stages definitely different w/ different ships--it's tough playing 1 ship for a while & knowing the stages & then trying another ship--confusing!

Oh, PS. The points clearly accumulate non-linearly. The longer you play, the faster your score increases. It seems to be related to picking up gold things & increasing that little multiplier at the top left. I'm not sure if that multiplier number reflects the points you get for picking up the next gold thing or the points you get for shooting the next ship or what. The points just escalate so rapidly that it's difficult to tell. Nonetheless, I'm sure that, the sooner you build up that multiplier, the better your score will ultimately be.

scoring explained: http://www.shmups.com/reviews/gigawing/ (http://www.shmups.com/reviews/gigawing/)
The red ship is the one all the experts seem to use, as its easier to get medals with. You only shoot stuff directly in front of you, which also means its harder to kill enemies with :)
-
Hmm. Think I need to use the reflect shot more, not just when I need to to survive. Looks like it has benefits in getting higher scores from the reflected shots.
One time (and not in my highest scoring game) I was able to get 75 billion in the first stage -- I think it was partially due to making it through on one life so my multiplier was around 900. Haven't been able to get near that again for the first stage, though.
-

Yeah, wasn't kiddn above when said to reflect shots and get the gold.

New score just short of 1 trillion: 918757171480
I can finally get past the boat boss without too much hassle, but now I keep dying on that long dual train thing. Oh well maybe this weekend I'll have better luck, eh skills :)
-
This game is actually growing on me. I've played it a couple of more hours and still haven't beaten my previous score.
:banghead:
Some of the music is reminiscent of Psykosonik's work in X-Kaliber 2097 and I'm still trying to remember where that "OK" sample comes from.
-

:banghead:
Just look on youtube for: Giga Wing [All Stage 1] by crithit5000 for some inspiration ;D
-
I feel like my strategy is getting better and I can consistently get into the upper 100-billion now, but still haven't been able to beat my high score. Keep dying against the second boss, which for the purple ship is the boat boss. That thing is brutal.
-
The first three levels are the same for all ships, there just in a different order. However, these levels are harder if you get to them later. The bosses seem to have slightly different (more annoying attack patterns). As I am using the blue ship, that boat is my first boss, meaning its slightly easier to deal with. I usually have a score of 700-800 (ignoring all the blue digits) when I reach the boat, and that score is usually doubled after I killed it.
Some small scoring tips for the boat level:
-those big red turrets, the ones that shoot three streams of bullets straight down, kill those just before they leave the screen. That should popup a really big medal (20pts) at the top of the screen.
-when you reach the mid boss (the ship that looks like ours and triggers a small dialog), don't shoot it, kill it using reflection only. That means reflect a wave of bullets, dodge and charge the next wave, reflect the following, etc. You choose if you want to start with dodging or reflecting.
One more for your first level (with the big red ship boss):
-just before you clear the land and take to the skies (near the end of the level), you will see a vertical array of turrets on the left, and a smaller vertical array of turrets on the right. Both sides have a tower directly after the turrets. The right one being large, and shooting annoyingly fast. Kill all the right stuff, but only kill the small tower on the left. If you only destroyed the tower, all turrets will explode into a huge medal (20pts)!
I also suggest submitting scores in the way that Gigawing shows them: 123123412345678, makes comparing scores a lot easier.
-
Played some last night........tried playin a few games for score.....did worse than when I played for survival. Go figure.
-
What level did you reach when you did get the highscore?
-
Not sure which level number it was. Killed the mech guy and then died on the next level to the tanx and the gold pyramids.
I think that's the last level.....and the two "end boss" levels would be after that.......but I always popcorn that stage.
-
Yeah I think you are right in that you made it to level 5. Level 7 is only reachable if you finish the first 6 levels with a single continue though :o
-
I think I got a big score. Pretty sure. Reflected as many shots as possible, while still shooting non-stop.

Just had two amazing runs! First one was the first time I ever reached the forth level, then the next run I even made it to level 5. Jeez man, the adrenaline is still racing through my body ;D
Anyway I obliterated my previous hi score and scored: 4669654169760
I was surprised that the level 4 boss is actually not that hard, but level 5 was just insane!
-
Nice!
Yeah, the "mech" boss is easier than that damn sub in the beginning I think. You must have made it a ways into five. I always popcorn that level for sum reason.....it might have to do with the billion bullets. :D
-

So from level 4 to level 5 you almost double your score, level 5 must be insane for scoring!!?
2,604,217,272,270
-
I did not make it that far into level 5, as I died in the same spot as you did spoot, with all those small pyramids. I think the reason my score is that high is that I had 100% boss break on all bosses. So any boss you defeat gets you a score increase of 50%-100%. I also had a really good run of the boat level, so I already started out with a high multiplier.
Afterwards I started a new game and used a few credits just to see all of level 5, and yeah there is huge reflect/score potential, but it is also insanely hard. I can only try one more time this evening (bloody 9 hours time difference), but I doubt I will get anywhere in level 5. So all you have to do lettuce, is just double your score one more time >:D
-

Edekoning, please pick another game!

I pick Osman, which is a Strider clone that I never played before, but which looks very cool! I found it by randomly browsing through my 'all games' list :applaud:

I'm a huge strider fan and I have played osman too. Strider essentially had two different teams working on it. One at capcom and another doing a comic. The idea was to develop the game based around the comic book and tie the two together.
One of the creators of strider left the team following the release of the game and created osman as a spiritual successor to strider. The imagery in the game so far has never been duplicated in any other game i have seen in the same era and not until the 3d era of gaming really kicked into high gear. It has some real crazy stuff. Especially the later levels. I won't spoil it for you. I will just say that the guy was very much ahead of his time in terms of alternate/fantasy visuals in video games. Osman is one of those rare gems.
Here's another interesting fact on strider. The game was being developed by Capcom Japan and the comic was a japanese only manga but the game was never released for the famicom, the japanese nes.
