Does anyone have a copy of Urban Interactive's awesome Star Wars Frontend launcher? I'd love to have a copy of it, but his link is dead. :(
You can see an example of it here:
Star Wars Launcher (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3MLZnpd1zKo#)
Thanks!
-
I might have a copy at home, I'll check. The emu is great if you only want to run those three games. I put out feelers looking for help to deconstruct it and add more options a few years ago but never got any bites. If I have the file I'll upload it here or PM you some details on where to get it.
My old thread: http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php/topic,118518.msg1255156.html#msg1255156 (http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php/topic,118518.msg1255156.html#msg1255156)

Oh man, that would awesome! Thanks.
I'm starting work on a replica Star Wars system, so yeah, it would only be playing those three.
-
DISASTER!!! I seem to have up and lost that beyotch! I think it went when I had a PC dump about a year ago. I've recovered most of my stuff but that little gem fell off the plate I guess.
I have a PM in to a friend on a different forum that also downloaded it before the link went tits up. Hopefully he'll save the day, if not it looks like it's back to square one.
-
Oh the humanity!
I don't think I saved that either. I don't know where to start with that.
-
The internet wayback machine lets you download the zip file. Problem is, for me, it came down empty. Maybe one of you is smarter than me and can figure out how to bring it down with the contents. I downloaded by searching the zip URL in the wayback and then right click, save target as on the one and only date it was captured - May 15, 2013
-
I sent a message to Shrunkenmaster and Leedsfan, both of whom I'm pretty sure had it at one time, lets see if they have better long term data retention than I

-
I did download that frontend back in the day, but I never used it because I decided to ditch Return Of The Jedi from my project. There was a problem with it anyway from what I can remember.... it didn't run on a certain operating system or something. There was no way to tweak the front end at all. What you see is what you get. If someone can remember the name of the actual file then it would make searching for it a bit easier... I've built at least one new desktop since then.

SHRUNKENMASTER!! YOU ROCK! Thanks!
-
Rar'd it down to an uploadable size for posterity (as posterous as this site is ;) ) Lemme know if it works. HUUUUUGE Thanks to Shrunkenmaster and to AC for his copy as well!
-
Got it up and running! Whoo!
Wish I could strip out the web address, though, since it's obsolete.

Hip. Hip!

Okay, stay with me here - I'm close to getting a passable version of this FE going in Maximus Arcade but I'm running into a snag
1) I downloaded a craptastic little program that simulates the old XP starfield screen saver and a screen video capture program
2) I recorded about 30 seconds of stars wizzing by and then used VLC to export that to frames
3) I imported to photoshop and trimmed off the watermark on the series then exported as a gif
4) I also created a swf in flash
5) I downloaded the SW, ESB, and ROTJ vector logos from lucasfilm, did some stroking and got them to look like vector drawings
6) I saved these as transparent pngs at 1024x768
7) I set the starfield swf as background in MA, got rid of all the game lists boarder, general crap on MA, set the emulator to batch, put everything in a folder together, and aimed it at the shortcuts to the roms that launch directly so I can mix in whatever games I want
8 ) I made sure to resize batch_screen sprite to 1024x768 (same as the layout) to ensure a nice fill over the starfield
9) I'm totally borked, the damn snapshots won't change size, they seem to be proportional to whatever size layout I'm using. No matter what I set that shizzle to it's about a quarter of the screen. No more, no less.
I'm clearly doing something wrong.
Oh, I tried this in Mala with a gif, the background works but the stupid snaps won't show transparency *grumble grumble grumble
Anybody got any recommendations, I'll try other FEs, I'm stupid close on this, I even set the selection to scroll sideways so it would feel right navigating with a yoke. BLAST!
screenie I took isn't animated, just pretend the stars are flowing by

.....
/me thinks that someone has waayyyy too much spare time on their hands....
-
It took about an hour. I know how to use a computer. You know you're on a hobby forum right? ;)
-
Oh, I tried this in Mala with a gif, the background works but the stupid snaps won't show transparency *grumble grumble grumble
You probably already know this but just in case, Mala only uses key transparency, not alpha channel. So your're snaps will have to have all transparent areas colored to a single specific color, then you can set that color to use for transparency in Mala config.
Yeah, it's not ideal by any stretch. At one point, I started work on a plugin to correct that, but never completed it. One of these days....
-
Yeah, there is no way to get a glow in the transparency. I'll try and clean it up tho and see if I can get a passable result

Star Wars Layout for MA based on Urban Interactive FE (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HHMMDXo6ONU#)
Got it figured out. Once you make the skin in MA you have to open the skin.ini and change the values to screen=[#default: [1024, 768], #wide: [1024, 768], #tall: [1024, 768]] if are needing your snaps to fill a 1024, 768 screen. The adjustment in the gui doesn't seem to do crap besides track center position of the snap.
Attached is my working photoshop doc so if you want to do something similar you don't have to start from scratch. I'm going to do up screen shots for all the games I'll play using my sw yoke in the same style.
Also, I could use a much cleaner swf of the stars flying, the one I have is okay but it skips when it loops and isn't great. I would like a really sharp one if anyone wants to help me out on this. I think it has potential.
-
Nice. I like it! :applaud:
-
Urban Interactive Layout for Maximus Arcade (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XfRbpe85XIg#)
Gussied it up a bit, flashing letters and whatnot. Added a few more game screens. Now I just need to finish any number of things I could use this with :lol
If anybody is interested in the actual layout its in the neighborhood of 40mb (MA layouts are always needlessly huge) but I can get it posted for download if you want it.
-
Downloaded, LeC. Thanks! Gonna try using 'em with AtomicFE.
-
Cool, if you can do animated backgrounds I can send you my craptastic starfield, it works but one that loops and has smaller more vectory stars would be tits. It's 8mb or something. I have it in gif and swf. Let me know how atomic works, if it has less overhead than MA I might switch.
-
Send it to me as a SWF. I can use that. Thanks.
-
You've got mail and stuff. If you need it to a different address pm me, I used the last one you sent.
-
You've put stun runner on that thing? Fantastic. Loved that game!
-
This is too perfect, just acquired a ROTJ cabinet and wanted to run a PC with the series as an alternative to the PCB. I really love the launcher shown at the top of the thread, if only there was a way to modify it.
Le Chuck's setup is incredible especially considering how quick it was done, awesome work! I'd offer my assistance in making an animated version, but I have no skills in programming. I can be a quine pig once I get my cabinet setup in case anyone want to give it a try.
Anyone have a link for the best way of setting up the Atari yoke for PC use?

The Atari Yoke is electrically the same as an analog joystick.
Use the 2-axis KADESTICK (link in sig) firmware and the AVR board + options indicated in the first post of that thread.
TwistyWrist (http://www.twistywristarcade.com/) has the 12 pin molex connector and pins that mate with the yoke harness so you don't need to hack the harness.

The mounting template for the yoke is here (http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php?action=dlattach;topic=133656.0;attach=293788).

Man I was just thinking about revisiting the front end in my SW cab! :applaud: .
On a side note yesterday I installed free space 2 with all the source code updates and apart from needing some extra keys it plays great on a yoke (interfaced with an A-pac).
Worth a look..

Sweet baby jebus.....
Suddenly re-thinking the PC I was going to put into my ROTJ cab. Hmmm... requirements shouldn't be too high on a low res screen, maybe I can substitute a 19" VGA CRT? (Keeping the G07 for if I ever make it back to stock of course)
I'm assuming Maximus Arcade would handle side loading of PC games?

I have been thinking about maybe building a dedicated cab for space sims but really need to think about the control scheme, I can play with the SW yoke but need more keys and a mouse to navigate.
One thought is to use joy2mouse and make an add-on shield with more buttons that fits around the yoke?.
Others swear by using a HOTAS while others just like a mouse/keyboard.
Think I will just start with the shield and see just how many keys are really needed.
I also have a copy of X-Rebirth that still needs to be installed and have zero idea of how cab friendly it is.
I do though want to apologise for the highjack - sorry guys!.

I remember posting about a cockpit mame cab for this genre, more so than the Star Trek Cockpit or Firefox.
Or a desk with a curved screen.
-
Man I am customer number one when you start shipping those bad boys!.
Maybe someone needs to build a cockpit with a SW yoke plus extra controls built into arm rests,
- trackball or even a trackpad
- Rudder pedals
- HOTAS ect
And have a SW, space sim , mechwarrior multi(cock?)pit.
Know what, just for kicks I think I will buy a trackpad just for an experiment.
A "last starfighter" cab clone has always appealed to me also, and you know that feeling you get when you are talking yourself into something expensive :banghead: .

As much as I love that movie (my gameroom and first MAME cab is named Starfighter), the SF cab in the movie is kinda ugly. It's an awkward design, although my 11 year old self would probably love the exact one.

For me the large size makes the shape seem worse than it could be.
I am running out of space so a scaled down version with alternate controls and paint scheme am what I am thinking.
Originally a bartop was considered as it looks to me like an overgrown bartop on a pedestal, but I do really like the nude cab shape in this photo.

I take it you're not familiar with Zerg and the Kodan Armada?
The Last Starfighter is a tits movie.
Really, if you extended the sides all the way to the ground and gave it a paperboy type base (with the step in) it would help the look out a lot I think.

I do not remember any nudity in that film, but I just picked up a $5 Panasonic LX-101 from the Goodwill and ordered the disc off ebay.
I agree with the foot wells. You need to be able to get in to that cab, to make it more environmental.

Just never seen that build before, was curious where -that- was from.

The Last Starfighter is a tits movie.
Ye gods man sacrilege I cry!.
You mean a movie where our young trailer-trash hero saves the world using skills honed at the crucible of an arcade game?.
With special effects that now even modern studios find hard to match - shame shame on you ;D .
@TKW4rr10r that shot is from a build I can not find anymore but it is mentioned in THIS BUILD (http://www.therpf.com/f9/starfighter-game-cabinet-51026/)
Also lots of resources and a repo of the game itself can be found HERE (http://www.roguesynapse.com/games/last_starfighter.php)

We clearly have a vernacular mix-up. Tits=good, dare I say great even. Pants=bad, horrid, lame.
I rewatched last night, introduced my 6 yr old to if for the first time. He is now a fan, was running around the house hunting Zando-zans and deathblossoming the armada.

It's a great movie for a whole lot of different reasons. Hopefully your 6 year old will be inspired by it like many of us were.

I was thinking about remake potential last night while watching it, in a few places the effects detract but for the most part it's so good. I can't imagine a different Alex Rogan, or Grig for that matter. The Beta scenes are some of my favorites.
I think it could use a digital facelift but it would be fine line between improving and f-ing it up completely. Some of the long shots could use some modern texturing and shading (space car into the Rylos port for instance) but some are perfect (long shot of the Gunstar in hangar).
When I was a kid I thought Grig and "Jerry" from Enemy Mine were like the same species and somehow the films were related.

I hear you. Part of the charm, I think, is the 80s computer graphics. I'm with you- texturing and shading might might improve it a bit, but graphics are passible.
-

Ahh I see!, a bit of cross-pond cultural divergence.
Oddly here it would probably mean bad, unless you said "the tits" but pants is as you said bad no matter where you come from :dizzy: .
I have to admit my memories of the movie need refreshing, think I last watched it when it got remastered a couple of years ago, maybe this weekend.
-
Ahh I see!, a bit of cross-pond cultural divergence.
Maybe the difference between "the tits" and going "tits up"?
Only time I heard a that vernacular was watching the proper version of Top Gear episodes ;)
-

Ha yes so my understanding is that "tits up" meaning to go wrong somehow derived from "ass over tit" meaning to trip/fall over.
http://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/arse_over_tit (http://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/arse_over_tit)
But that may well be wrong as I am sure a lot of sayings suffer from the chinese whisper syndrome.
So LeChuck I do not think I have ever seen enemy mine - its downloading right now and shall be watched soon after :) .
And back on topic thanks for the work you did on the new front end it will definitely get some testing by myself  .
I will need to make some extra logo`s though as I have other games installed.
Maybe we need a list of yoke friendly titles?.
-
A List of Yoke Friendly Titles:
Star Wars
Empire Strikes Back
Return of the Jedi
Turbo Sub
Tomcat
S.T.U.N. Runner
Firefox
Hydra
Lock On
SW Trilogy
Space Gun
T2
(any of the positional gun games really)
Star Fox
(will add to this post as they come in)
-
My multiSW, while just running SW right now, would have SW, ESB, RJ, S.T.U.N. Runner, and Firefox. But that's a good list I need to check out.
-
Hmmmm, some pretty good games on there besides the SW franchise.
Maybe there a way to have an "others" option in that front end that can take you to the, well, other yoke compatible games?
-

If using MA you can do lists, have the "all games" the "SW Games" and the "other" then you can arrange the lists how you want so it opens to SW and can map a key to cycle through the lists. Really you can do this with any FE, so it should be pretty simple to setup wherever.

I thought Descent would be a good fit too. I don't think I got far enough in that game to be close to done, but I am not sure graphics stand the test of time.

That looks really great!! If the game list text is an issue, can the size and/or color be adjusted to hide it?
-
Face-palm why did I not think of that! :) .
If you replace the selector boxes with transparent ones and have black text then that works perfectly.
Not really decided if I want the text box or not but a quick vid will demo it.
The extra snaps in the video are attached if anyone actually wants them but still need some cleaning up and recoloring, and some are still offset for the text box but you get the idea.
I really must also have a play with MA sometime as I have no experience with it.
Any help offered with making the extra snaps would also be welcomed if anyone is up for it? ;D .

Get a list of snaps we need and I'll start working it off. Attached is a pack of what I currently have and there is a .swf of the flashing text instructions. Once I get the list done I'll get a resource kit uploaded as well. I'm working on a Last Starfighter theme right now but the .swf included is for Star Wars since that's what most people will be using, it has the instructions at the top and "may the force be with you" at the bottom
Snaps included in this pack (don't have any text other than the game name)
Star Wars
STUN Runner
Star Fox
Last Star Fighter - will redo this one to look more like the others
ROTJ
ESB
PAPERBOY
Current version:

Sounds for right and left are a lift from RockyRocket's - once I get the sounds all ironed out I'll post those up as well.

Practically speaking, SP2 for WIN9 will be out before out before I make use of this. It sure is developing nicely. In the event that Star Wars X-Wing vs TIE Fighter runs on WIN9 is it worth adding that? Can Xwing v Tiefighter be played with a yoke?
2014 will be the year of Star Wars/yoke cabinets I can feel it.
-
Damn these are coming along great. I need to start work on my PC for this build. Funds are tied up for at least a month or so as it is anyway, so might as well get any prep work done before the cab restore.

Dude, have I told ya how much I like you lately? ;D .
That starfighter theme sure is purdy LeChuck, I am impressed you find the time with a six year old.
Can I say "impressive, most impressive"?.
So for snaps my list is on post 18 but I have to add wing commander to that and I also forgot about having 3D starstrike installed but for some reason not on my FE?.
3D Starstrike (http://indiegames.com/2008/08/freeware_game_pick_3d_starstri.html) is also from urban interactive, at least he finished this one :-\ .
Download links seem to be mostly dead but I can post the installer if it wont break any forum rules?.
I also can not believe the starfighter game never got installed on this cab either - plays fine with a trackball on another one.
You getting tempted by a Starfighter cab LeChuck?.
Attached are some more sound samples ripped from an android app (I did not name them :laugh2: ).

How can you guys have missed of Starblade, perfectly playable on yoke and really cool star wars inspired game.

Dude, have I told ya how much I like you lately? ;D .
That starfighter theme sure is purdy LeChuck, I am impressed you find the time with a six year old.
Can I say "impressive, most impressive"?.
No

After the last language mix up we had I am not touching that one eric :P .
@Barry good catch mate.
Just been trying to get starlancer to load in nulldc with no luck - have failed at this a few times in the past with differing roms, shame as it looks good.

I have a four year old too ;D It's busy but I gave up TV almost a decade ago so I just use my time differently (Still love movies - those don't count ;) )
I'll start working through these so they all get the same treatement. That doesn't mean my way is better, just that they'll all have the same glow, same line thickness, kinda all look equally bad lol.
Post up 3D Starstrike, UrbanInteractive released it under an open license right? Should be good, let's get it posted and make it available again.
The list of SNAPS that need wireframing:
MAME
- Esb
- Sw
- Firefox
- Stunrunner
- Tac/scan
- Tail gunner
- Galaxy force 2
- Paper boy
- ROTJ
- Hydra
Supermodel
- Sw trilogy arcade
NullDC

Project64

- Starfox64
SNES
- Starfox
PC
- Sw rogue squadron
- Free space scp
- Diaspora
- Starfighter (requires additional controls)
- 3D Starstrike
What about StarLancer? That looks yoke-ish and spacey, never played it tho.
I might not get them all done but I'll do a chunk - let me know what I've missed.
-
Cool sounds good, I am with you about TV I only watch 20mins of news and weather before work each morning.
Starlancer looks good I just cannot get it to run, nulldc does not list it as fully working in compatibility list though - maybe demul will work?.
The wing commander saga (http://www.wcsaga.com/) is another very polished standalone freespace spinoff and very worthy of the list.
3D starstrike is attached but there may be a reason it was left of my roms list, will check it.
Fired up starfox64 earlier and found it ran a tad slow for me on the test cab, maybe it will run better in the SW one.
Will also install X-wing vs Tie as a yoke test for you eric (Win9? crumbs my SW cab still runs XP ;) )
Edit 3DStarstrike is to big to attach so I put it on mediafire here.......

2014 will be the year of Star Wars/yoke cabinets I can feel it.
Man.... If I could find a yoke I'd totally be there... Would LOVE to have a yoke can here and be able to play Star Wars, but finding a yoke? Good luck up here in the Great White North...

KADESTICK AVR/firmware and some groovy gears when the rest get finished. We are on our way. My jedi-sense is tingling!
-
Well LeChuck I have done what I can with my snaps to try to get them consistent with yours but think I need to defer to your techniques, its close but no cigar :) .
Think I will still attach them for use untill/if better ones come along ;) , though probably should of removed the text.

GameeX can use 3D models as snaps so just for fun used one to see how it looks.
I guess the game snaps could be extruded and used as models, and it may look cool - but I certainly am not doing it :) .
Fraps is playing badly with these video`s so please discount the slowdown.

KADE
Minor point of clarification for anyone wanting to go this route -- the standard KADE AVR only handles digital inputs.
You'll need a KADESTICK AVR/firmware (link in sig) or KADE+ (still in development AFAIK) for analog inputs.
Scott
EDIT: Corrected KADE+ name.

The list of SNAPS that need wireframing: Post any games I've missed and I'll get them added to the list. Ones that are marked through are done. All PNGs are transparent with an outer glow on the wire frame. I can convert them to no glow and a black alpha channel if anybody needs that for a specific FE but this should work for 99% of people. The size is 800x600 but they seem to upscale well enough to at least one resolution higher if need be.

Should we add After Burner? Anybody play that, anybody play that with a yoke? Is there a second one that's well emulated?
3D Starstrike is the only two color one I've done so far, I like it but can do a monotone in anybody feels the need. Tac/Scan was a scratch build, I'd really like a font like that but couldn't find one.
<Edit: Changed out the snaps.rar to the most up to date pack>
-
Good work LeChuck!, would you be willing to share the full MA theme? - just installed the FE.
So I have found out why I never added 3DStarstrike to my front end - it only recognizes A mouse for input so no joystick.
joy2mouse works - badly, maybe another utility will work better?.
X-wing vs TIE works great with a yoke, but then again I am using an Apac so its just seen as a joy.
regarding the yoke interfacing I have a spare hacked dual strike if anyone could use it?.
-
I'll share the full version once I get some time to tweak and shrink it, absolutely.
Edit: Most up to date snap pack is above. Have just a few left.
-
Should we add After Burner? Anybody play that, anybody play that with a yoke? Is there a second one that's well emulated?
Absolutely if you are keen, it works fine - I just left it off for more spacey games.
Other possible titles are:
N64
-Aerofighters assault
-Aerogauge
Possibly Paperboy again? (worth playing)
NullDC
-Aerowings 1 + 2 (require extra buttons though)
Want to say thanks again for the snaps LeChuck they fit the vector starwars style perfectly - way better than the hyperspin one I was using.

It looks like you have made some improvements to your cab. Parts are glowing and colored that weren't before. The drop down monitor looks different to. Do you have recent pictures?
-
Yeah I still seem to mess with it each year :banghead: .
The small screen is a vga one to replace the expired usb POS.
The plan is to move it back and box it in as there`s lots of empty space above the main screen.
Not happy with the 12 half tube reliefs being grey now so will change them back to black.
The corner details are mdf with some formed tinted plexi with EL tape behind.
The EL tape whines like a banshee.
EDIT: So going back to games that play well with a yoke I am going to shout TEMPEST its such fun with a yoke, you need to give it its own ini to slow the yoke down and add a deadzone but hey.
Some snaps are included if anyone wants them :) .
Anyone know a version of mame that plays the battlezone speed hack rom from AAE? as that could be fun too.
-
How did? What the? Where? This thread is great. This surprised me more than having two proton torpedoes destroy a large space station. But I guess if you can bullseye womp rats in a T-16 anything is possible. Thanks everyone for the download links. I'll have to create a new cab. And I'll use a joystick instead of a yoke. Because that's what Le Chuck would want. >:D
-
Still working out a few niggling issues with MA and trying to get a solid dl together for everyone's use. Will be a while as I might move to a different FE. In the mean time I'll finish up the last few screenies I have to do and get those up. I'll also see if I can upload some better starfield simulations since I've taken to making my own.
-
Colored me impressed as usual Le Chuck.
-
Project64
- Sw shadows of the empire
- Sw ep1 racer (also on PC - which is better?)
- Starfox64
I have both but prefer the N64 since there is a code to play with 2 analog sticks. You can make a set up where it controls like the arcade game:
Star Wars Episode 1: Racer with Dual Throttle Controls (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HtPwbhC8wQs#ws)

I also highly recommend Star Wars Arcade on 32X. This isn't the same as Trilogy on Supermodel. It works great on Fusion. Last I checked it didn't work on MAME.

This was a great Star Wars type game for the Atari 5200. Works great on MESS and did use an analog stick.

Already had this on one of my cabs and never even realized, thanks for sharing!.
So I have yet again borrowed Le Chucks work (thanks man) and embedded the text SWF from earlier into the background vid I am using.
Think the GameEx theme is now done, if anyone wants it I will upload it somewhere tomorrow.
Funny thing is its only now that I feel my SW cab is finished properly, only took two years :) .

OH MAN! Please upload it! :notworthy:
I will dont worry, but think it needs a proper readme first, lots of settings need to be turned off for it to work properly.
Not sure if its too niche for the GameEx forum as it just will not be suitable for general use.
Most of the credit must go to Le Chuck though, and you will of course need to grab the snaps separately.

1) Thanks but unneccessary, we're in this together so credit is due all around
2) I will get a fresh snap pack up by this coming weekend. I'm sorry for the delay, I've been splitting time between several other projects but don't want to leave this one sit too long so I'll get after it sharpish

Does anybody else using Maximus Arcade have issue with sound effects not playing on game selection? It's driving me bonkers!

;D Cooperation, I remember them singing about that in sesame street.
Got a bit bogged down but am still working on this - the multi starwars one is good to go just needs a readme, and a second more general use one has one small niggle.
Will post when all is sorted, but here is how they look at the moment.
-
So I have finally finished messing with the gameEx theme and have come up with two versions "ALUMINIUM FALCON (http://www.mediafire.com/download/da1ppl6o9lrtcw6/ALUMINIUM_FALCON.zip)" is the real bare bones one and comes in 1600 x 1200 but another .INI is included that will bring it down to 1024 x 768 if needed.
The second version "RED Leader (http://www.mediafire.com/download/f7co4vy9n5vitz3/RED_Leader.zip)" has a text box and smaller snap window and although still bare bones is more suitable for less niche cabs.
Again various .INI files are included that will alter how much info is shown as well as the text color.
-
My thanks to you and Le Chuck for the work you guys put into this. Really well done! :applaud:
-
You are very welcome, Le Chuck is still beavering away in the background though so its not over yet.
Anyway here is a shot of the final ALUMINIUM FALCON theme.
With all this talk of space sims I ended up buying a used HOTAS after all, the aim is to use it for a bit then decide if I want to build a cab around it?
Now if only X could be like this all the time...

Finished up the snaps for:
Freespace 2
Diaspora
Wings of Saint Nazaire
Afterburner
There might be one or two more to tackle but I think I'm reaching tracer burnout on these so I'll get the FE wrapped (I've called in help and might be switching FEs if we can work some miracles) and get everything posted.
-
I've been really frustrated at Maximus Arcade - seems a shame to work on this project and end up with "almost perfect but not quite" so I have been trying a lot of different FEs. A metric crap load of FEs. I saw Arximidis' homebrewed HTML5 FE a while ago and finally had some time to tinker around with it. Thanks to a ton of help from Arximidis we are getting a pretty good product together. There are still some wrinkles to iron out (sound effects, some gui elements so you don't have to edit the html files line by line.....) but Arximidis has been cranking out the updates and I think we'll get a good alternative to RockyRocket's awesome skin for GameEx. That way there will be at least two options out there and both will be slightly different with regards to effects and what you can do with them.
This is where we're at now - again, not a 100% solution, but getting closer! Backround doesn't repeat in the video but that's my fault, it now repeats.

Not to be 'that guy' but did you notice that Empire is cut off in the top right corner?

Not to be 'that guy' but did you notice that Empire is cut off in the top right corner?
yup, we discuss it over in Arximidis' thread (http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php/topic,133795.msg1429134.html#msg1429134). There is a break where the marquee goes, Arximidis is adding a feature to selectively disable the marquee in the next update so it shouldn't be an issue. He's also adding some sound options and additional layout controls.
I'm going through and setting up 20 games now. It's pretty easy but if you have a ton of games I'd recommend using the lower level menus that are available as well. Each game has to be set up individually for this FE to look the way we want but I think it's going to be well worth it.
http://youtu.be/-tgznvnB_Nw (http://youtu.be/-tgznvnB_Nw)
Where I'm currently at with it. And yes, I did put chose and not choose and no it wasn't on purpose. ;D I'll get that fixed
http://youtu.be/D8C5jdM8ayQ (http://youtu.be/D8C5jdM8ayQ)
Updated! I also did a background that says "May the Force be with you" so both will be available. Most issues are fixed now, just need to get sounds and launching animation complete. Intro movie already works, I just don't have one I like right now. Background music also works and Arximidis may set up an option to rotate music based on what game is showing.

Hi guys,
I was messing around with a javascript starfield simulation that I found on the web (http://www.chromeexperiments.com/detail/starfield/?f=` (http://www.chromeexperiments.com/detail/starfield/?f=`)) and it was surprisingly straight forward to adapt it somewhat into a layout for the attractmode frontend.
So I've got a layout now where you can use an analog stick to "navigate" as you fly through the starfield. IMHO it looks pretty good with the great snaps Le Chuck has posted on this thread. Thanks for sharing your work and ideas.
In case anyone is interested, I've got a rough video of what I have so far and a link to the layout below:

Well the FE is what you interact with when you first approach the cab - I've always been frustrated by how incongruous they look in SW cabs. There are good driving FEs out there, and fine ones for regular gaming, but there was a dearth of good flying FEs so this should help fill that void. You drop a looping sky background in place of the stars, change the icons a bit, and you've got a great sky cab fe too.
-
That`s some great work guys! :applaud: .
-
Hats off to LeChuck and raygun on your efforts. Some really nice stuff. :applaud:
I really like the bouncy navigation effect that raygun is showing.
I could just imagine using a spinner or stick to nav left and right, with the current logo zooming off screen in the opposite direction and the new logo zooming in from the navigated- to direction. Not trying to make more work. I love where you guys are going here!

Not to derail this thread (like it never happens) BUT, why, in every dance movie when everyone people dance together for the first time they know the dance perfectly and are perfectly corrigraphed? I would pay to see this in real life. In real life you know everyone would be making every mistake possible and look like total asses. Man movies are full of so many lies.

So I took a stab at this and I like the results a lot better than what I had before... nothing too crazy, just a smooth move from left to right that is coordinated with the starfield motion. thanks for the suggestion. Here's where I'm at now with the layout:

I should be able to start moving fwd on my Idle Fingers build again this week, finally have the time to get the computer all setup so I'll do that...which means I might actually get the FE polished off and maybe even a gamelist completed soon for upload. My apologies for those that have been waiting for an updated packet on this, I'll get to it soonish.

If anybody knows Java and HTLM5 and can help out or isn't a gynecologist but is willing to take a look as the old joke goes please mosey on over to Arximidis' HTML5 FE thread (http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php/topic,133795.msg1451623.html#msg1451623) where we're working on Joystick integration. This is the last piece of the puzzle to get the FE ready for prime time.
Arximidis has added a lot of great features to the build and if you checked it out in a while you definitely should.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=re4kZKQnk-E# (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=re4kZKQnk-E#)
There are a lot of features not shown in this video - HTML5FE also does game lists so you can have MAME as a main icon and the a popup menu will appear with video preview and all kinds of other stuff available. One can configure the carousel however you need and orient it however you need or you don't even need a carousel, you can do a floating cube.
Like any FE there is a bit of a learning curve but HTML5FE is simple and integrating new games and new menus is very easy. You can launch exes and bats directly or go into menus and have multiple instances of the same emulator. I don't think there is a "tree" yet so you one could do a carousel of emulators and then do a carousel of genres within that but probably because nobody has asked arximidis to do it. I've been focused on my requirements and he has been very receptive to all the requests.
Get it here: http://users.ntua.gr/dpiperid/MyWebPage/Catalog/games/HTMLFrontEndEN.htm (http://users.ntua.gr/dpiperid/MyWebPage/Catalog/games/HTMLFrontEndEN.htm)
If you have IE10 or higher (not that you would ever browse with it but the FE uses it as a plugin) use HTMLFEv3.0
If you don't you'll need the QT version HTMLFEQTv3.1 and the dependencies (http://users.ntua.gr/dpiperid/MyWebPage/Catalog/games/FE_tutor/htmlFEtutorEN.htm) and videolan (http://www.videolan.org/vlc/download-windows.html)
You also have to download the default HTML theme and build from that. It's the same for both versions. Link just below the version lists on Arximidis' download page.
The FE is scalable. All the snaps I have done so far are 640x480 and if you want your carousel to look and behave like the one in the video here are my settings. There is more than one way to skin this cat but this works very well.

Attached below are all the snaps I have done so far - at least I think that's all of them. A few aren't great but overall it's a good effort. Snaps are the 27 snaps I've done. If you need one that isn't listed let me know and I'll help out. Of course if you're a DIY type and don't like bothering me because you think I'm too busy or not nice or something SW FE Snaps is the .psd document I did everything on. You'll need to hunt for fonts but other than that it'll get you going.
-
Nice!!!
The tree feature is a good idea ;)
-
Le Chuck, any chance you could post the HTML files and MAME setting.ini file you are using? I've installed the HTMLFE, but am only having limited success with it. Thanks!
-

Yes, I'll put together a small package as an example set that should work. You'll just have to either adjust file structure in the settings or mirror your file structure to match. Give me a few days and I'll get it up.
-
Okay, I tried to package the full thing - minus the QT dependencies for a simple upload but couldn't get it quite small enough but this will work to illustrate.
Attention: This uses the HTML5FE v.4.11 and v.4.5 theme. If you try this with other versions it will probably work but I make no promises.
Attention: If your file structure is different than mine (prolly is) adjust as necessary.
Attached you will find the rar'd "emulators" folder that goes in the default640x480 folder of the theme file from arximidis' site. Unpack and replace the stock emulator with this one.
Attached you will find the FE's settings.ini (rar;d); unpack and replace the stock with this one.
When you open the FE go to the menu and into the settings and set yours as mine are shown in the post four up from this one.
What I did is give you MAME three ways.
1) MAME: Mame is set as an emulator and when selected will open a list of the available roms and show snaps on the side. If you want to have game names rather than just a rom list you can use the .xml function but I find this to be buggy. You can also format your own list I'm sure but I haven't gotten into that. Basically what you have here is your standard list of roms.
2) SW: This calls the starwars rom directly from another version of mame in a different folder. Rather than going into a menu it will launch directly. (rom and version of mame not included)
3) ESB: This calls a batch file that will run ESB rom directly. Allows you to customize the launch code to suit advanced user needs. (batch not included)
With those three examples you can/should be able to launch anything. Lists of Batch files by genre set up as "emulators" with mixed systems in a single list. No sub lists and just a big revolving door of direct launching games across multiple platforms. Multiple instances of mame in a single list. Multiple genres of MAME all as separate menus.
No tree function yet (list w/in a list) but that's coming. Also, there are a lot of functions not explored in my files, like launching an intro vid for each emulator, unique selection sounds and music for each emulator, yada yada yada.
Hope this helps ;)

Le Chuck, any chance you could post the HTML files and MAME setting.ini file you are using? I've installed the HTMLFE, but am only having limited success with it. Thanks!
With all the develompent I forgot to write a simple tutorial. To be fair I had written one but a lot things have changed since then
The general idea is this:
Each entry of the carousel is a directory inside emulators directory of default640x480. Inside you place a png image with excactly the same name with the directory (be carefull with lowercase and uppercase at least for Linux). Also place picture with the name marquee.png. This will be the title displayed when you rotate the carousel. Last but not least place a settings.ini file. In this file you write all the settings of whta the FE must do when selecting an item (emulator) of the carousel
An example:
Suppose we installed mame to the directory C:/mame. We copied all the roms to C:/mame/roms, all the image previews to C:/mame/snaps and all the video previews to c:/mame/videos
Step 1
Go to emulatros directory of default640x480 theme. Create a directory with the name, lets say MAME. Inside this directory place a png image with the name MAME.png. This image will be displayed on the carousel. Also place an image with the name marquee.png. This will be the title displayed when we rotate the carousel to our new emulator
Now go to the main settings.ini file (this is the file which came along with the main executable, HTMLFrontEnd.exe). Go to the [ALLOWED PROGRAMS] section and add an entry with exactly the same name with the directory you just created. For our example we add an entry with the name MAME. Then write the full path of the main executable of the emulator, like the following
MAME = C:/mame/mame.exe
If you use mame64 you must write MAME = C:/mame/mame64.exe
and so on
Step 2
Go to the directory of the emulator you created and create a settings.ini file. Open the file and write the following
[SETTINGS]
ROM = {FILE}
ROMPATH = C:/mame/roms/
ROMEXT = *.zip
COMMAND = \"{rom}\"
WAIT = yes
ROMSNAPS = C:/mame/snaps/
ROMINTROS = C:/mame/videos/
Explanation:
The first command ROM = {FILE}
tells to the FE that we like to list all the files with the ROMEXT extention, inside ROMPATH directory
With the command ROMPATH = C:/mame/roms/
you provide the full path of roms directory. Meaning where the roms are located. Attention: Don't forget the last /
The command ROMEXT = *.zip
tells the FE to search and list only the files with the extention zip (don't forget the *)
Now, The command COMMAND = \"{rom}\"
tells the FE what parameters to provide to the emulator. In this case the FE will replace the {rom} prefix with the actual selected game from the list. So, if for example we select 1942, then FE will run the emulator with the following parameters
mame.exe "1042.zip"
(Note: it will include the rompath too)
Nottice the double quotes. If we had written COMMAND = {rom} the double quotes would have not be included. Sometimes double quotes are importand especially in Windows
If we want to provide more parameters we separate them with a comma
For example to tell to dosbox to run in fullscreen mode we must provide the -fullscreen parameter and to exit when close the game we must provide the -exit parameter. In this case we must write in our settings.ini file
COMMAND = {rom},-exit,-fullscreen
(for DOSBox)
The next command WAIT = yes
tells to the FE to wait until we close the emulator (finish playing the game)
The last two commands are providing the full paths of the image previews (ROMSNAPS) and the video previews (ROMINTROS)
Notiice that image previews must have the extention .png and video previews the extention .mp4 (this is due to the fact we use html5 to play video in the Linux version, but in the feature I will add an option to select between avi and mp4)
That's it!
We are done with our firt emulator setup.
When you download the default640x480 theme you will nottice that there are some emulators already fixed. This is to help you out. You need to change only the paths
Now there are more things to tell about the settings as there are more options
But I will discuss those in a new post or edit this one
-
(continue)
As I said, if we want to list all the zip files inside a directory (all our roms), we must write the following to the settings.ini file of our newly created directory
ROM = {FILE}
ROMPATH = C:/mame/roms/
ROMEXT = *.zip
The previous commands tell to the FE to list all the files with the extention ROMEXT inside the directory ROMPATH
The problem with these settings is that we will see the actual rom names in the list and not the game titles.
However, there is a way to list the game titles (instead of the rom names) if we privide an XML or an INI file list
Reading game tiltes form XML or INI lists
We can get the XML list directly from mame (I think you must run mame from command promt with this parameter: mame -listxml)
XML lists are slower to load (at least the first time).
INI lists are way faster and you can have categories (eg. favorites, action etc)
However, for now, I don't provide an automated procedure to convert an XML list to INI list (but in the feature I will)
Suppose we run the command and created the xml list with the name gamelist.xml
In order to tell to the FE to load this xml list, we must provide the full path. So we write (for our example)
ROM = {XML}
ROMPATH = C:/mame/roms/
ROMEXT = *.zip
ROMLIST = C:/mame/gamelist.xml
We added a new command and we changed ROM from {FILE} to {XML}. The command ROM={XML} tells that we want to load an xml list
The new command ROMLIST = C:/mame/gamelist.xml provides the full path where we saved our game list
Things are not so different for INI lists. If, for example, we have an ini list with the name custom.ini, we must write the following commands in order to load it with the frontend
ROM = {INI}
ROMPATH = C:/mame/roms/
ROMEXT = *.zip
ROMLIST = C:/mame/custom.ini
Notice, that we changed ROM = {XML} to ROM={INI} and chanded the full path of the list
ROMLIST = C:/mame/custom.ini (if we saved it under C:/mame)
The INI file structure gives you the ability to create categories (action games, adventure, favorites etc).
For that I have attached an example of an INI file list
In this list you see that each section is a category. Under the section we write the actual rom names (without the extention).
In this example INI file list, I haven't
If we want to see the game tiltes in the list (and not the rom names), we must provide the title for each rom separately like this
1942 = 1942
ddragon = Double Dragon
and so on
In the attachment, I have not included the game titles.
Writting the INI list from scratch may be a difficult task. However, as I said before, in the future I will provide an automated procedure to convert an XML list to an INI list.
Also I will include tools to create categories (for the INI file lists) inside the interface of the FrontEnd
There are couple more settings you can do (especially for emulators like DOSBox) and other settings that gives you the ability to change the default sound effects and so on, but I will discuss them in a new post

Great Stuff guys! Thanks! I've got it all working, now just a matter of tweaking.
I know there are multiple threads on here about it, but could you point me in the right direction to set it up so it autoboots to HTMLFE? Thanks!

Any luck in getting the joystick to control the selections in HTMLFE? About to put the cabinet together, and not sure if I should stick with HTMLFE or not.. I don't want to have extra buttons just to make game selections...

As far as I know there is a javascript library to enable gamapad/joystick support. I haven't test it yet (I don't have a joystick) but it looks like it is supported.
You can try it out but you will have to write some code (there are examples on how to use)

Thats a Razer Nostromo (out of production - thats also the 2nd version of the thing, the original was made by Belkin before Razer got involved)
The replacement is this: http://www.razerzone.com/gaming-keyboards-keypads/razer-orbweaver (http://www.razerzone.com/gaming-keyboards-keypads/razer-orbweaver)

Hi Eric, no sorry - my plan is to go my whole life without ever posting on facebook, I do though have a bogus account for stalking browsing pages.
I am now though on the elite forums along with a familiar face or two from here.
Yep as fursphere pointed out it is the old nostromo and it is great, but the new ones look to have better thumb joypads.
Also this cab is only running an AMD athlon 6000+ and a GT730 so you do not need high specs by any means.
Now just roll on the the 16th for the full release :) .

Go for it!, I need more time to decide but feel that the yoke may be more accurate than my HOTAS?.
Thinking I will restore this other yoke and make a controller to try out this yoke/X52 pro combo.

Hello
OK, I bought a gamepad and I have already tested the new code. It works, but it requires a small plugin to be installed (easy procedure).
For now, I am using it as a joystic (after all a fully functional gamepad is not required inside the FrontEnd)
When I will release the new version, I will not support Windows XP, due to vlc crashes, etc.
From now on, I am supporting only the IE version which is stable. Nowdays it's easy to find (or create) a slim version of windows 7 (with internet explorer not removed).

So, I got the JS file, I call it in the Setting.html file, but for the life of me I can't figure how to get HTMLFE to recognize the rotation or button presses on my yoke. It should be the X of Joystick 1 and Button 1 & 2.
Can you help out Arxmidis?
Also, construction of my replica cabinet has FINALLY started!

.....
The version you have, doesn't support joystics
The new upcoming version does!
Are you planning to use windows XP or Windows 7?
The new version runs perfectly on Windows 7.
You can run it on Windows XP too, but you will "loose" all the html5 stuff and the css animations
I am using a light (slim) version of Windows 7 for my cab, with internet explorer not removed
PS: By the way. Nice CAB!!! :applaud:

Arximidis, how can I get my hands on the new build?? 8)
I'm running full Windows 7 at the moment. (How did you get yours "slim"?)
-
There are tools for that, like vLite for windows 7 and RT seven Lite
Also you can find versions from sites your are not suppose to download :P
The importand thing is not to remove internet explorer. When I was searching I had found slim versions with internet explorer included
However, I recommend to use your legal copy and try to create a slim version yourself. There are tutorials on the internet on how to do it
PS. The new version is not completed yet, but it is possible to upload it uncompleted for testing.

Thanks for the info! I'll get on it.

I'm nothing if not punctual....
So about a year after Raygun posted his take on this FE (many posts above) I finally got around to installing it and now have it as the dedicated FE on my cab.
The short and sweet - Attract-Mode FE might be the easiest implementation of the "SW FE" out of the box.
I think arximidis has a great build but it has been somewhat temperamental with some of my systems and the most recent version I can no longer use unless I want to install a new OS. So I finally sat down and began to teach myself about Attract-Mode and didn't really get far into learning it because I was up and running so quickly.
So if you want to try this go download Attract-Mode from: http://attractmode.org/download.html (http://attractmode.org/download.html)
Then download the Warp layout (read skin for you older FE'rs) from: https://github.com/mickelson/attract-extra (https://github.com/mickelson/attract-extra) (click dl zip in the lower right)
Then open that zip and copy the Warp folder out of layouts and drop it in the layouts folder in the freshest Attract-Mode FE you just downloaded.
If you want any sounds drop them into the "sounds" folder - you'll assign them in the FE tab menu.
Open the FE and hit tab. Set the display as Warp and point the emulators at the snaps and files you want to run. Set sounds. Set the controls (Attract-Mode read my kade+ out of the box) and you're done. Stupid simple. I have all my stuff running from a folder full of batch files and only the "windows programs" emulator setup since it looks for *.bat or *.lnk. I guess you could build out your own and set that up but I didn't have to. I didn't have the learn squirrel or anything crazy, just about 5 minutes worth of fiddling and I was done.
Issues:
I can't get the snaps to slide of the the left and right as I navigate, they just fade in and out, even if I have the layout set to "navigate" instead of "fade" but maybe Raygun can take another look and square that up.
Once I sit down and learn squirrel I'll figure out how to add in some gifs so I can have the instructions floating and flashing along the bottom but again, not a big deal. That's not an issues so much as just on my todo list since I know the FE can do it.
So if you're still looking for a good SW FE I'd recommend Attract-Mode. It answers the mail and then sum. Sorry I didn't try this out a year ago-ish but remember, I'm nothing if not punctual. ;)

Hey Le Chuck,
Getting the navigate effect working is a bit wonky, but here is what you have to do:
- Go into the layout options screen (Config->Displays->[name of display]->Layout Options) and map the Up, Down, Left and Right controls there to your analog joystick (just select Up and then push up on the joystick, etc.). Also make the switch from 'fade' to 'navigate' while you are on this screen.
- Next go to the controls screen (Config->Controls) and make sure that the joystick you just mapped for the layout is *not* mapped for the up/down controls there (which will override the navigate effect) A warning though: make sure you have something else mapped to up/down before you remove the joystick mapping, so you can still navigate through config mode!
After you do this your joystick should be controlling the starfield effect and as you steer left/right the snaps for the games should drift on/off the screen. Hopefully that all makes sense.
Cheers

Worked great! This FE rocks man!

Long time no update!
Was complaining about something in another thread and yoke games came up, which made me realize I hadn't updated anything over here in a long time.
So over the last year I've tried a number of games and have whittled down the list a fair amount, so this won't be a list of all yoke compatible games. Instead, this will be a list of guest/kid friendly yoke games that have worked out for me. A lot of games didn't last because they took too long to get into, weren't fun in short bursts, didn't have replay, needed too much explanation of what to do or how to do it, felt redundant, etc. While Freespace is awesome of what it is, it does hit on a lot of those things. Ditto a ton of other games. That said, I've uploaded my current batch of transparent snaps made for use with Attract-Mode FE's Warp Layout (includes a lot of games not listed here, for your use).
So here's my list and why its a keeper for me - and if you've got any recommendations let me hear them. Love adding new content!
After Burner - a surprising fav of guests and kids with them routinely playing through multiple levels
Cyber Sled - personal fav, recent add. More for me than anyone else
ESB - Completeness, people expect to see it but no one plays it.
Mobile Suite Gundam Final Assault - Space themed rail shooter where you start flying in the second-ish level. Good ish
Galaxy Force II - Fun space rail shooter with good level variety.
Gun Buster - Unique movement mechanic that works really well with the yoke
Hydro Thunder - Played every time the machine is on by anyone playing. Often times the only game on during a party
Jurassic Park - kids. love. it. Want to get the sequel working but it's more light gunny so probably not the best choice.
Mario Kart GP2 - the other fan favorite, fills that cart racer itch
Night Striker - recent addition, kids enjoy it, good variety, might not last
Paperboy - Those that remember it love it, those that don't skip it.
Prop Cycle - Got it running full speed, audio glitches a bit. Works great with a yoke and is a nice change of pace
ROTJ - completeness and a personal fav. I really enjoy this much hated gem.
Space Harrier - Really really want to upgrade to the Planet Harriers on Demul Hakiru, just can't get it working right. This is a good unique game tho.
Solar Assault - Wow. Needs no reason. If you can get it running full speed it's a must have.
STUN Runner - Surprisingly in the top five for most played games. Everybody remembers it and likes it.
Star Blade - Good wow factor, really works with the theme and feel
Star Wars - Completeness. Nobody plays it for more than a level but me. People usually jump in and then out after the first DS if they even make it that far.
Star Wars Racer Revenge - PS2 version, better than the PC SWR, a few menus to jump through with either and this has better graphics and gameplay.
T2 - The other kids love it gotta have it game.
Star Wars Trilogy - Second most played game after Hydro Thunder.
-
Thanks Le Chuck for posting this as its been very helpful in getting my Multi Yoke Hydra going. I might have a few more games e.g. Spy Hunter that would work than your build as my Hydra comes with a pedal and two Boost buttons that I wired as separate buttons. Any more game suggestions?
The only quirk I have with Attract Mode is that when I scroll in the next game, if I bring it all the way to the center, then it will load the previous game even though you can't see the snap of the previous game. Do notice your users having this same question.
Onto getting Star Wars trilogy working with the analog Yoke in Supermodel and finding all of the MP2s!

Where did you get that picture (Starfighter cabinet). Is there a company/person selling cabinet kits?
-
A "last starfighter" cab clone has always appealed to me also, and you know that feeling you get when you are talking yourself into something expensive :banghead: .

Went down the internet rabbit hole today looking for ROMs that would work on a Paperboy cab (handlebars are really a modded yoke) and stumbled on this thread. I've been reading it and the companion build thread for about an hour now (with side google searches to watch video game clips to go down memory lane).
This thread got my brain going. My wife bought me a Star Wars Arcade1up (I know, purists, death to A1up) for Christmas last year, but made me promise not to mod it. However, we know that promises are made to be broken, apologies are easier than permission and if I do it on the down-low and smooth enough there won't be any complaints when it's unveiled.
What I'm seeing is that the FE for this is Maximus Arcade with Le Chuck's custom overlays, videos, snaps etc, correct?
Also, is Maximus Arcade a pay-for software? I swear I have a 'free copy' somewhere that came with....something I bought.
Lastly, has anyone attempted with an Arcade1up's yoke?
