My 6 yr old has been using Darkade in his room for about a year and has announced that he needs a three or four player machine for all his friends. While most people on here never get three or even a single other living person to play with them that often the story is different for young kids. We routinely have them lined up in the room waiting for a turn to play so I'll build him the monstrosity.
To keep the footprint small I'm planning a 3/4 scale Gauntlet cab. Yes I know the CP layout isn't the best but they're young and will adapt. The art is why I'm here. Need good ideas on how to kid up a Sunset Riders. They love the game but I hate the art that's out there for it so I want to revamp it, make it more cartoony maybe. Also make it so it looks like it was designed for the gauntlet cab.
I'm not looking for somebody to do the art for me, I can handle that. I'm looking for ideas, tangents, things I haven't thought of, design elements to consider, regular brain storming stuff. Help a brother out!
-
Well the obvious suggestion is to do a Gauntlet styled Sunset Riders theme. Meaning do the marquee, side art and control panel like Gauntlet but use the fonts. colors, and characters from Sunset Riders.

I like that stuff on Deviant, but I am just so "meh" about this theme. He loves it, wife and I both don't. Shame there aren't any 4 player airplane games. Wife would like an American ace/ 1942 type build.
I tried to sell him on an updated ninja turtle theme but he wasn't having it. Any suggestions for a new theme. He likes cops and robbers or cowboys.
-
How about Crime Fighters? :dunno
Only other 4-player game I can think of.
-
I personally wouldn't make it too cartoony, maybe more like a gritty caricature. I remember by the time I was 8, I was obsessed with westerns, I loved Clint Eastwood flicks the most. I would probably knock off artwork from actual westerns. Something with a feel like this, maybe?
And go with plenty of cliche stuff. Bullet holes, wanted posters, ropes, dusty old wood boards, etc.
Also, I would recommend maybe building a Trog cab. It is very much like a gauntlet in shape, but it has a half octagon control panel, which should make the controls feel a bit easier to handle with all the extra buttons.
-
That's really good feedback Vigo, I had forgotten about the Trog cab, it's a nice design - may go with that. I can still do full width and just chop it off at the knees so to speak. (I have a 19" CRT I want to stick in it as all my LCDs don't have good viewing angles for 4p).
I like the grit, I like cliches. I love the movie "Warrior's Way" (which is terrible in a wonderful good way) so maybe I could steal some elements of that and get a good vibe going when coupled with all the classic westerns of my youth.

Yeah I started with those, he wasn't biting. Kid is a tough customer. I've been showing him examples of cabs on here and other classic cabs, I really wanted to build him an NHL Open Ice cab (he's on a hockey team) but he shot that one down hard. I was crushed, mom didn't like the NHL cab either as she hates white cabs for some reason.
In the end he'll take what I give him and like it :bat lol, but i'd like to find something that I can sink my teeth into, I hate working on art that doesn't interest me. I'm selfish like that.
Bri would still prefer I make him a dedicated "Deadstorm Pirates" machine but there isn't a PC version and I gave my PS3 away to a good cause.
-
What about castle crashers? Wasn't there a pretty sweet cab here based on that theme?
-
Here's another cowboy theme:

But seriously, I like the work you did on A Fistfull of Quarters. Could you take the same tack and go with that style? Or does it HAVE TO BE Sunset Riders.
-
@Haru - didn't melissa do some of the art on that? I'll take a look at that game, I'm sure there are some good 4p PC games that I could theme off of.
@Yot - I think just a western theme would fit the bill, that does open up a much wider world to explore.

You could throw the Sunset Riders logo on there and mix it with your own western art, I'm sure. You can pull it off!

Kid is anti turtle, can't believe it, even with updated art he wasn't taking the bait. Just showed him castle crashers, his reply, "Cowboys."

Maybe I can talk him into "candy nightmare"...
A pacman battle royale in a TROG cab would be fun.

I was thinking about going with a minimalist theme inspired by the opening credits of The Good the Bad and the Ugly and the movie posters of Django Unchained. Something like the following:
-
Funny you should say "minimalist" I was just thinking - you know what this kid needs? A cab, not a display piece. He can toss stickers on the side, paint on it, whatever. If I sink hour and hours into custom art on a 6 yr old's toy am I making the best decision. Will he be happy with it when he's 8? Will I care? To quote Henry Ford, "Black bishes, black is the new black"
-
LIGHTBULB!
make it an all black cab or whatever, then just put a cowboy hat on top.
-
Is a dedicated Carnevil too out there for a 6 year old? I can add teh HOTD games to mix it up.
-
If you are going the 'paint it yourself' or 'slap some stickers on it' motif then why not paint it with chalkboard paint and let your son design it the way he wants to with chalk.
-
Hey Le Chuck, I was thinking about your Sunset Riders idea, and an idea came to me about making the artwork in a more Scooby-Doo/Hanna Barbara style.
You could take the Sunset Riders, their poses, and paint over top of it in the more simplified, light-hearted style of Scooby-Doo...(thick outer outlines, thin inner detail lines. bright colours, a few "sharper corners" mixed in with some rounded contours...)
You think that's something you could pull off?
-
That's not a bad idea. I could do the line work on paper then just import it to ps for coloring - would allow me to play with the theme a bit more and open up my art selection to ripping off a lot of scooby doo ghost towns/cow towns. I'll have to give that some thought for sure.
Maybe I can even sell him on a Scooby Doo theme. I love the Doo!
-
There's some art here (http://vectorlib2.free.fr/ScoobyBorne) from the Mystery Machine thread (http://www.gamoover.net/Forums/index.php?topic=10144.0).

He bought off on Scooby Doo. Finally some traction with this kid, its a theme I can get behind too. I know yaksplat did a nice Crystal Caverns machine, I think I might take mine more old school Scoob - kiddo really likes the haunted mansion trope so there is a lot to play with on this theme and yak did some nice work along that line already so I have some good implimentation examples out there.
To the Mystery Machine!

Zoinks!!

You gotta put the mummy near the coin door.

Which one of you ---uvulas--- took the Mummy's scarab?
Good job convincing him, LC!

Yeah, so many fun villians, inside jokes, and iconic characters. Should be a blast to play with. Still looking at a chopped Trog cab.
If only there was some cool 4 player Scooby Doo game. Maybe I should take another gander at that PMBR project and do up some scooby art.

:applaud: Excellent theme choice! And there are a bazillion art samples out there you can grab off the net.
-
I must say that the Mystery Machine has always been one of my favorite themed cabs.
It'll be great to see another take on the Scooby theme.
-
My favorite SD episodes always seemed to be the ones with special guest appearances. I'd like to incorporate some of the stars into the build, either in a montage sideart, or maybe on the kickplate. I can even do something similar to the Popeye sideart with characters bubbled in.
Some of my favs:
The Harlem Globetrotters
Sonny and Cher
Don Knotts
Mama Cass
The Addams Family
Batman and Robin
Maybe do one side in "the gang" the other in "villians" and bring it together on the kp with guest stars or something.
-
No love for Jonathan Winters? Or Jerry Reed singing "Pretty Mary Sunshine"?
Glad you did a shoutout to Don Knotts!
Whatever you do, do NOT include that abomination known as Scrappy-Doo. I hated that ---smurf--- with a passion, even as a kid.

Scrappy was annoying but I always liked Scooby's cousin, Scooby-Dum. Jonathan Winters episodes were awesome, ditto the Laurel and Hardy ones. Also not to be included in any art is "A pup named Scooby Doo" which was a horrid show although I'm still partial to the jazzy riffs of "scooby-dooby-doo, dooby-dee-doo" during the intro scenes. I may indirectly reference Red Herring.

+1,000,000 Scrappy Doo is an abomination. You know a character sucks when even 7 year old kids hate him.
Loved Don Knotts and Laurel and Hardy, 3 stooges and Adams family were disappointments. I also loved Shaggy's Rich Uncle, Uncle Shagworthy. Mostly because even when I was a kid, I knew that would be an awesome pimp name.

About the only thing to be appreciated about that show is the focus on Fred's ineptitude. I can't recall him ever getting close to solving a case in the original series.

I'm gettin' all nostalgic up in this ---smurfette---.

I'll give you $5 if, when finished, you take a photo of yourself playing it wearing a white long-sleeve and orange scarf.

$5 is $5. Done.

System shutdown sound should be, "I'd have gotten away with it if it weren't for you meddling kids." :laugh2:

Plenty of great Scooby Doo Vector art available online for free. As an example here is some Pinball Side Art I made for guys over at VPForums. Same art would look great on a kids Arcade machine.
