Title: Does anyone see a problem with this
Post by: jaharr01 on January 19, 2014, 04:13:00 am
I'm building a cab and I have a couple of computers laying around. One is a P4 HT like 3.2 gig 2gig of ram and I have an ultrabook that I stepped on the screen but the computer works fine.It is an:
 Intel Core i5 3337U (1.80GHz)
4GB Memory 500GB HDD 20GB SSD
Intel HD Graphics 4000
1366 x 768
Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit

I'm leaning towards the ultrabook. I was wondering if there may be a problem going out of the HDMI on the back with resolution issues, dragging down the processor, and etc? It has no screen on it now. It has a crappy video card but it has a much newer processor and much  less of a power hog. I was worried because of the lack of expansion with a laptop with a bunch of usb devices. Also it doesn't have a cd drive but I don't see that as being an issue.I ran mame off of it and a few other emulators but it won't run anything like dolphin or ps2 emulators. Much more expansion with the p4 but it uses 64 watts. It have a couple of expansion slots and a pci E in the p4. just wondering what to do.

remove it from the laptop case, mount it to a board or something, run it in high performance power profile and keep it plugged in and you be fine.

Use the Ultrabook.

If you cannot get video out of the hdmi port to work properly, use USB.  I have two USB to VGA adapters from Startech and they are fast enough for Mame but not HD video.  Besides the USB resolution would have to be 1024x768 to be of any use.  Does the laptop have a VGA port?

i5 4gb should be fast enough for most emulators including Dolphin.

If the laptop display is toast why not look at getting a replacement screen for the laptop?

Check Ebay for spares and repairs.  Replacing the screen is not hard.

I looked into getting a replacement screen from several vendors it was $600. Anyway I bought a new Macbook pro retina so i really don't need it as a laptop. I tested the HDMI out it worked fine.Maybe the reason it wouldn't run dolphin was I didn't set it up and it may have been on low power mode. I was thinking last night that the ultrabook may be better because it has a ssd hybrid drive. like 25gb/300gb. I guess I was concerned more about it only having like 2 or 3 usb ports but I guess I could put a powered hub on there. Anyway thanks guys for the quick response

I think the ultrabook will make a better arcade system than it did a step stool  ;D

I took the whole screen off my laptop and just use a monitor.

I was 7 kinds of pissed when I stepped on it. And 7 more kinda pissed when I couldn't get a screen for it. On the bright side I love this new mac book pro. It is smooth as silk. Boots up in like less than 7 seconds. I guess the ultra book it is. Okay I have one more question how would I wire a power switch into the ultra book for the arcade. Also should I leave it on wake on usb and when the stick is moved it opens up.

Would this laptop:Intel Core i5 3337U (1.80GHz)
4GB Memory 500GB HDD 20GB SSD
Intel HD Graphics 4000
1366 x 768
Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit
Will it run a model 3 emulator? ps2 emulator?I wasn't sure if they are processor intensive or graphics card intensive or both. I can use the p4 i spoke about above and get a good graphics card.
