Title: Newb here, in need of opinion
Post by: Xarcade on January 12, 2014, 09:22:11 am
Hi guys. I am new member on this board but been lurking for a while. I am currently in the process of building my first cab. Now focusing on the artwork since it is so cold outside and can't go woodwork in the unheated garage. So anyways, I am also a newb at Photoshop but I have managed to work something out...I need feedback to see if something seems wrong or off. so here it is.

The edges will be rounded off on the cp

thanks.

why does it say xarcade in the corner? Other than that it looks good. Assuming orange and or white buttons for the players?

I does say xarcade in the bottom right,  that is the "prototype name" since I didn't come up with anything yet and it would also be found on the marquee. LED pushbuttons will be yellow and red for players and at the top will be the white 1 and 2 player buttons and a black one middle. The idea in the color scheme was to give it an oldschool vibe. No game art in particular but I always had a soft spot for space invaders.

Also, the joystick arrows in the middle should be covered with the joystick "ring" (is there a name for this?) this is the only way I found making the arrows with the bump effect in PS... that why they might seem strange.

I guess you've never heard of the Xarcade product line?

Your art does have a nice generic late 70s early 80s vibe to it. Quite refreshing to not see a collage of clip art for a change

:applaud:   I love it.  Stick with it!  Keep it old school and try to keep it from looking like someone spilled a bag of Skittles on your CP.

After 3 and a half years on this board, I finally found my signature.

I like it a lot.

Choose button colours wisely and show us another mockup.

Am I doing it wrong?

Should the stripes at the top be red over orange over white too?

It would match the bottom better.

Yes, the top should match the bottom in terms of layer-order.

I'm not too keen on the rounded edges, mainly because the bottom one reminds me of hotdog weiners...and someone squishing the middle of them.  I understand that your CP is rounded, but those bottom bars really look strange, especially that bend in the middle.  Personally I'd make the everything but the edges (if you are set on retaining the rounded nubs) angular.  I'm talking about that bend, specifically.  Either that, or just keep the bars straight and have them traverse under the Space Invader, but he can have a black outline around him to separate him from the bars.

I would also continue the top bars throughout the buttons, or you can do what I mentioned with the SI guy, have the button holes have a black outline around them, separating them from the continuous line across the top.

The rose-dials around the joysticks definitely need more refinement. I would make the arrows much smaller, separating them from overlapping. Try to get some of the black between each arrow. I'm not sure why you put that middle part in, it's just going to be cut out from the joystick hole.

Overall, the whole image just seems too plain, and there is a lot of negative space not being utilized.
The retro art-style doesn't mean just straight --simplicity--. You still have to put some cleverness into it, whether it be from contrasting proportions of the visual elements, adding some design "textures" to it (aka patterns) or just adding more complimentary colours for some more visual depth. Stepped-gradients are also good to add for some visual stimulus.
Your colour scheme could also use a few more additions, perhaps one or two neutral half-way colour like a brown or grey (used sparingly of course) , and maybe another main colour.
