Title: Gauntlet Dark Legacy Sound
Post by: Tzakiel on January 09, 2014, 04:13:40 pm
Just a question - on my system this game runs just about full speed but the sound is really, really bad... like it sounds like it's underwater and just really off. Is that normal or should it play sound OK on a fast PC?  I am running a 4.4 ghz core i5

Another weird thing is that it runs anywhere from 80-300% speed. The sound is really all over the place.

A 4.4ghz i5 is more than enough as long as HLSL isn't enabled.  (might even be enough with it enabled!)
It should be running at full speed, not "just about full speed".
It also shouldn't be running at 300%.  Press F10 to toggle throttle and see if it levels out.

I didn't comment sooner because I don't remember what it supposed to sound like and haven't had time to fire it up.
If you do have hlsl on, try it with it off and report back.

With or without throttle it sounds like a broken organ under water. And it does dip even into the 60% where there are smoke effects, etc. I don't use hlsl. I use groovymame and a crt.

Play the GameCube version on Dolphin.

Or the PS2 version on the PS2 emulator (forget the name...)

I know there are probably better ways to play, but this is more of a "why doesn't it work" thing that's bothering me.  I'm just wondering if it's normal to not be able to run it well in Mame even on a 4.4ghz cpu. I find the frame rate playable but the sound is really screwy.  Or maybe I had a bad rom or CHD somehow.

Have you audited the CHDs to make sure you have the right versions that match your roms and mame version?  Those ones in particular have changed a few times.

Honestly, I just think the emulation of those games isn't quite done yet, because it takes so much CPU power to run them (when compared to the bulk of MAME games) that there isn't a lot of interest.  You hav to remember there is a ton of people still rocking Pentium 4s with MAME.  :D

That may be it... I think I found a random CHD and I already had the rom as part of a torrent.  Maybe they are not a match.

I just played through the first "forrest" level of Gauntlet Dark Legacy (gauntdl).  A few video glitches, but the sound seemed fine.

Core i5 3570k, 8gb ram, 660ti video card.   MAMEUIFX .152 with clrmamepro audited roms and chds (version matching)

Hope you get yours working.

Well I got the latest rom and chd and I also changed the mame tab menu to set the game to standard resokution. Now it runs around 150% all the time and the sound is also sped up. F10 seems to do nothing but if I turn frame skip to 1/10 it runs around 115% and is closer to right. But still rough. Sounds terrible. Maybe it's groovymame. I'll check another build of mame and see if that works better.
