From your description, it sounds like you have a SPDT switch (Single Pole Double Throw). One of the contacts is normally open, one is normally closed and the third is ground. You will want to use a meter or other means of testing contunity to identify the normally open and ground terminals. Follow the link to a slideshow that will take you through the terminal identification process (the good stuff is about 10 slides into the show).

1 NC (normally closed)
FIFY
Swing arms = poles.
Positions = throws.
