Title: Quick and cheap Dart backboard...
Post by: mcseforsale on January 05, 2014, 02:39:40 pm
So, start with a leftover 1/2" mdf cut.

Whip out my crappy finish-woodworking skills and cut some 45s in a 1 3/8" x 1/2" piece of trim molding and add in $9.97 worth of cork shelf paper (self adhesive....the backing makes it sticky and tear resistant):

Cut the cork using the molding as a guide and a sharp razor.  Then, dry fit the molding:

Another unfinished project on the bench.  I'll be staining the molding with some sort of red stain, then making a spay paint template of something on the cork.

Hope to have this finished by next weekend.

Project is almost finished.  I'm just looking to create a spray bomb stencil for the cork.  I didn't like the red stains that I saw, so I just painted it with my arcade paint (Rustoleum Panter's Touch).  I'll be doing some stressing on the molding to enhance the spray bomb stencil.

Now, I just need to figure out how to hang the damn thing.  I weighed it and it's 21 lbs.

Heh.  The dartboard itself is almost half the weight.  It's pretty old timey and has a 3/4" particle board back.  Late '80s Accudart Bull.  Not sure if they're made that way anymore.

I'm thinking an OOK HeavyHold

So, I did a single screw d-ring and a 50 lb ook.  Seems to work out great.  The cork shelf paper works very well.  I whipped a couple of darts into it and it repaired very nicely by just pushing down on the dart mark with my finger.  Here it is in it's new home.  I think I'm going to do a spraypaint stencil surrounding the dartboard eventually.  For now, I need to build a small chalkboard with a shelf for holding darts and chalk.

Hmm..  that'd make a pretty good drinking game!   :applaud:  This was a disney themed playroom.  The colors are Buzz Lightyear green, Tigger orange, Winnie the Pooh red, and I think the purple had something to do with a princess of some kind.  Those are the stuffed animals I wasn't allowed to get rid of.

something to consider - the odd dart wont stick, and could do damage to your bookshelf

OK, moved the bookshelf, hung the bike on the wall and created an outchart using the same 1/2" mdf/molding construction.  First, did a decoupage with an outchart that I got from here:

Trimmed the labels from top and bottom, then weathered the edges with a lighter to make it look more 3d.  I'll probably do a darker poly over the top of it to make it look older.

New Piranha darts showed up on Friday, so it's been a fun weekend.  I'm still wanting that damn Kokoi dart scoreboard.  I don't have the tools/skill to make one.
