Title: trackball questions
Post by: civic83 on November 27, 2003, 09:05:51 pm
I just aquired what I beleive to be an original missile command trackball assembly.  Everything is there, including the opto boards.  I was wondering if anyone knows or has a link to the pinout for these boards.  They are marked "steering board, atari 79" and have some sort of 10 pin connector on them.

Also, if anyone has any of these connectors for sale/trade I would be interested, if not I'll desolder them and pigtail some new connectors to them.

Thanks!

I had the exact same question last year...

They now work beautifully, and here's how to wire them (http://www.arcadecontrols.org/yabbse/index.php?board=1;action=display;threadid=3770&start=0).

Here's some more Missle Command trackballs (http://www.arcadecontrols.org/yabbse/index.php?board=1;action=display;threadid=13263) info from a few weeks ago.  Pay particular attention to OSCAR's post in that thread if you need to restore the mechanism, and mine if you want pretty balls to put in it.

There's a guy who makes/sells replacement rollers (http://www.mantisamusements.com/) for these giant TBs.  Look in "Videos" for "Trackball Rollers 4" Atari."

Bob Roberts sells the Atari 4" mating connector w/ socs and also the roller bearings (http://www.dameon.net/BBBB/parts.html#tbs) for them.

Do me a favor and measure the ball you have.  Is it a 4" (diameter) or a 4.5"?

Let us know how it works out for you!

Al

wow, thanks for the info!  I measured the ball in mine 4.5" is what mine is.  The rollers are shot, about a 1/16"  groove worn into each one so they will need replacing, other than that, the bearings still run smooth so it just needs a good cleaning.

I love this thing, im going to have to go back to where I got it and rummage around, see if there are any more!

Replacing the rollers and cleaning the gunk/rust out of the 25 year old bearings has made mine feel like new, and the candlepin balls made them look new.  Of course I now have more money in each TB mechanism than I paid for the whole cabinet they came in...

Try not to become obsessed with them, like I have :)
