Title: S-Video / Composite -> RGBS
Post by: draco on November 27, 2003, 10:00:42 am: I'm looking to use non-RGB video sources in my cab such as old consoles and the like. I already have a nice original 28" Hantarex arcade monitor in there which is great, but I want to connect s-video and composite equipment into it. There are a number of 'VGA boxes' on the market for hooking consoles etc. to VGA monitors, but all the ones I've seen scan-double to 31khz. I'm wondering if anyone has seen one which will allow you to disable the scan doubling, or a hack to an existing one, so you just end up with a composite/s-video to RGBS decoder? This is really bugging me because it's a bit of electronics that's in all TV's by their very nature and should b easy to get hold of... but the only readily available ones I've seen are multi-purpose pro convertor boxes that cost upwards of $200.

Aye, tis a cracking page that and has helped me along many times in the past while learning this stuff - but what I'm really after is some flexibility to use the arcade monitor as something more general by giving it the ability to accept s-video and composite inputs. Granted, it's possible to get RGBS out of most things one way or another, but I'd still like to have the option ;)

Post by: darklegion on November 28, 2003, 06:17:24 am: Nearly all consoles output rgb but for a few(the 3do i believe is one) so your better off taking rgb straight from the console rather than using a converter.The quality will be much better this way and the cables will cost virtually nothing to make.Check www.gamesx.com for details..

Post by: PacManFan on November 30, 2003, 10:53:58 am: Sorry to hijack this thread, but I was going to post about the same thing, I've got my arcade cabinet set up so that my kids can watch movies (VCR) on it, I just got a nice 25" Hantarex monitor that I'm going to put in my cabinet to replace the 25" crappy RF-only tv that's in there now. I want my kids to still be able to watch movies on it, so I need some sort of Composite to RGBS converter like the "Dragons Lair/ Space Ace" Composite to RGB board. Is there a commerical site or buisness that manufactures these? Can I build my own circuit using a NTSC to RGBS comb filter?

None that I've found. I looked for quite a while (maybe that's been changed, I haven't looked for a while). Happs used to carry one for the K7000 series monitor (not sure if it was compatable with other mons.), but no longer has any in stock)

All schematics I found for NTSC to RGB circuits were either more expensive than buying a complete unit on Ebay, or nearly impossible to find the chip for.
