Not that Hank Chien is considered new anymore.

Meh.

I guess I'm one of the few "retro gamers" that doesn't care for Donkey Kong at all. For it it's just a mere stepping stone on the way to Super Mario Bros. Once SMB or even arguably MB was released it became the equivalent of Street Fighter I to the Street Fighter II that is SMB.
I'm not hating on it at all, it's just that the King of Kong documentary was more about the people than the game (thankfully). If they are going to keep this going, perhaps they need to choose a more interesting game.

I loved the documentary. However, after trying to like the game, it is just too hard for me to enjoy.

It is hard to be sure but I don't even think that's it. Even from the first level, the barrels appear to have no real pattern. Yes there is a pattern in the subsequent barrels, but as to which set you'll get...totally random afaict. To me at least that's unfair.
It's kind of like the official Pacman sequels, which use the standard ghost logic compared to Junior Pacman, which uses a crappy, totally random function. I like a challenge, but I'm not too keen on the game "cheating" it's way to victory.
