Ok, I"m nearing completion of my cab...one of the last phase is the painting of the acrylic that's over the monitor. Out of curiousity does it matter if the paint be on the outside or the inside? Gloss or flat/matte?
Thanks

Ooops, a search just came up on this subject - some say sand it with 220 grit sandpaper??????
-
I'd mask off the part you don't want spraied, on the INSIDE of the plex, then hit it with a coat or two of good quality black. I don't think you'll want to sand, since the sand marks will show through, and you definitely don't want to prime.
Now, if you do decide to paint the OUTSIDE of the plex, it's a whole different story. In that case, i'd sand AND prime, but I suspect you'll get much better results painting the inside.

Paint the inside. Use a QUALITY painters tape for blocking out the monitor. hit it with at least 4 layers of paint. I've used Matte and Semi-Gloss/Gloss and Gloss always comes off feeling plastic/sticky. Matte feels like I could scratch it away with my finger. Both look fine at the end of the day on the other side of the glass IMO.

Ok thanks...tape like that Frog Tape brand I guess....
-
Any good masking tape will suffice. You just want something that wont bleed through the tape. Apply enough pressure so that it won't bleed around the edges and wait until it is completely dry to remove the tape.

Krypton fusion is a spray paint meant specifically for use with plastics, and without he need for a primer. If you spray the back side of the plastic with their gloss black, it will look like the glass bezel on an iphone or ipad from the front. ;)

Really Really make sure to clean it very good! I found out the hard way without cleaning and double cleaning before paint you will run into problems on adherence. Trust me!

You can actually have artwork printed directly on plexi if you'd be interested in that. That's what I did.

I just did mine with Rustoleums painters touch 2x (flat black paint + primer)
4-5 light coats and it came out AMAZING, and I didnt sand it at all.

Or have it printed and apply it just like you would side and control panel art.

Do we really need a new thread for "has anyone spray painted a bezel" and "what do you spray paint a bezel with?" ??????
You should use this: http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php?action=search2&search=spraypaint%20bezel (http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php?action=search2&search=spraypaint%20bezel)

Actually, as a follow-up to this... the colors turned out WAY more vibrant when printed on backlit material (which is white) than on clear decals.
Anyway, not sure what the OP decided to go with but if you want an all black bezel it's also really easy to just cut some poster/mattte board. Just make sure it has a black core so you don't have to go over it with a sharpie.
