Post by: shayvidas on December 13, 2013, 01:17:59 am
so i'm hafway through my build now
i have my Mame buttons, and all the graphics,
i have my plans that i finelized...
i have my iPec2 bored
i'm waiting for my joysticks and new swiches i bought (didn't like the old swiches that came with the led buttons)
and overall it took me around 2, 2.5 months to do just that...
and i'm thinking it takes forever this build... i thought it's going to take me 2 months top for my whole project, now i'm thinking it's going to take more like
5, 6 months (the parts are expensive so i'm ordering every month or so a cupple of them also who has time ? the graphics alone was a month work)

how much time do you guys took with your first build ?
is 5, months normal for a full mame cabinet ?

There are some builds that have taken years to complete.  Take your time, enjoy the process, it probablywon't be your only one.

Ready for this one Shay?  I was two months away from finishing my first build, which has taken me over a year, when I started my second.  Mind you I was only tweaking the software when I started the physical build on my second one.  Like Slippyblade said it's a hobby.  Take your time and enjoy.  Better to take your time and get it right then doing things twice in a rush and getting aggravated and completely scrapping the whole build.

I'm a half a year in and am ready to buy a router and s h i t to make the cabinet. Had some bad luck with my piece of s h i t low mileage "reliable" ford, had to buy another car, and am also trying to finish my 4 year project RX7. It takes time when your ballin on a budget. Fining all the stupid stuff to make the computer easily plug into the wall nicely and start with one arcade button took some planning/trial/error. Motherboard keeps power to USB when off, so I had to source a stupid molex -> USB cable.

Sometimes it takes a while to get things right.

Two words for you remember if you think your build is taking too long, Shayvidas --  Mission Control (http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php/topic,13118.0.html).   ;D

OMG, look at all those admin buttons!   ;D

The part where he moves the joystick left and right on the nag box in time with the music still makes me chuckle.

OMG.  Hadn't seen Mission Control before, that is amazing.  And that video deserves to be in the Hall of Fame on its' OWN merit.

Rick's turkey puncher has been going for what? 2-3 years now?

I'm coming up to a year and so far I have laminated plywood leaning against the hallway wall.

Like it was said before, take your time and enjoy yourself. It may take awhile but it will be worth it.

My cabinet took a good few years to finally come to be.
I first built my controller with happ comps and comp buttons and had it set up with the multi sync monitor sitting on a desk.
I originally had an old z back that ended up being too beat up and then I got another cabinet and started only to be dissatisfied. Then one day, I got another cab and had that kinda setup in the dirty basement with my controller bolted on it and the monitor in it.
Then I had my dream idea design of a build only to find it was much too big to fit in the space I had planned.
So I totally re-planned everything with all new parts including sanwas and rgb buttons and now I'm very happy with my cabinet.  It took about 4 years from my first idea to build a cabinet to actually having a finished one I like. And yes there were times I had to space out purchases cause I didn't have the money.
Heck, after my cab, I built a htpc for console emulation. That took over a year (mostly because of money and lack of interest at times) just to get it built and I still haven't gotten the software tweaked to my liking.
