OK I'm sure this is the wrong place for this but it is an arcade game so here goes.
I finally got to Goro in MK1 and he totally slaughtered me! !#$%
I fought him a few times and I guess I could just keep on practising but anyone have any tips for kickin this freaks butt?

Ahh, *the* game that got me interested in Mame.
I don't know how many times I've played that game through now, but lately I usually just quit when I get upto Goro, as I don't think the game's much 'fun' past that point.
Anyways, I generally try and stay in the air, leaping in for flying-kicks and whatnot, and then leaping out *immediately*, just basically try and let the only time you're in close be when you're kicking him. It's been a while, but I think Sub-Zero's freeze helps a bunch too if you can land it. (Sub-Zero junkie)

Cool thanks for that. I am a sub-zero player mostly to. It's weird I had absolutely no interest in fighting games when I discovered MAME. I was more like "Oh my god" I can play Galaga & PacMan & Time Pilot etc. But after palying MK1 a few times it rules. I'll give your tips a whirl and see how I go. By the way I tried MK2 today and whoa that is tough.

Yeah MK2 was the peak of the mortal kombat series. That was so popular in the arcade. Lots of characters with lots of moves, and you can be Shang Tsung and use special combos to transform into anyone and then you have to know their special moves to perform them :o

Sub zero is good vs. Goro...
lots of jumping kicks/punches is what i use to defeat him too.. you don't want to stay close in with this guy..
ice blast/spear/fireball/whatever you can lay on him from range is good.. typically follow up fireball with a flying kick etc..
I thoroughly enjoyed MK1 in the arcades.. haven't played it on MAME yet (PC is too slow) but I'm looking forward to it! MK1 is probably my favorite fighting game. Followed by Tekken3 and SF2. MK2 was good but I don't think it was as good as MK1.

Happens every time I try to play MK (any revision, DLed from multiple sources).

Sure.. take it slow.. you don't have to do it fast to succeed..
Forward, down, forward and then High Punch.
try that and return joystick to center before going to next position.. then speed up the movments as you get used to it.. let me know if that helps

And the game ...... having trouble getting past Goro but super excited. I want to become proficient with all fighters in MK1 prior to moving onto MK2. Some day though, the dedicated fighting cab!
Doing it with Raiden first. I was an MK1 champ in my high-school with MK1 on the Genesis. People could only hope for a draw. I was proficient with everyone, even Raiden!
Any goro tips for the arcade appreciated.

i use to freeze the MK1 machine 2 ways, one with goro and the other one on the doubles fight escene.At the double fight escene was easy, just defeat the first guy, at the second you have to win in health but not defeat your fighter and let the time reach 0.Once the time reaches 0 the machine froses.And with goro, i use to fight him with scorpion, and found an strategie that gives me draw game with goro, you can only do draw game 6 times, then the machine froses.Im going to play MK1 today to see if i can remember that secuense. But i remembered Goro an eazy to beat charater.

Just remember when doing moves, including (and especially) fatalities, it is 10x easier to press the button at the end AFTER the move and get success. So you'd press the HP a quarter second after pressing the second Forward, not at the same time for Subby's fatal.

For Goro, I found the strategy of staying away from him to be best. And do alot of jump kicks. Also, throw things at him. Ice balls, lighting etc. Do not do special moves that put you next to him if you get blocked.
For Tso Tsung (or whatever his name is), wait for him to change to another character before engaging him. AS himself, just duck his fireballs. It's a simple strategy but once you realize that you can not let his fireballs hit you, it gets way easier.
