Doom isn't a windows game, it's a DOS game.  You should be running all dos games via dos box at this point.  I hate to tell you this but they wouldn't run on a 32 bit os either.... at least not properly.  ;)

For DOOM you've got three options

1) Get DOSBox - its a DOS emulator.  This is how you play old DOS games in newer versions of Windows.  And its free.

2) Get the Steam version of DOOM, that just automates and "wraps" the DOSBox setup for you.  lol

3) Get a newer 3rd Party EXE for it.  zDOOM or GLoom are two that I know off hand.  They're basically 3D accelerated upgrades of the original DOOM engine(s).  You'll need the WAD files from the original doom games.  They work with all the WAD based games.  Heretic.  Hexen. Doom. Doom2.  etc.    One of them even adds mouselook so you can look up and down - which creates some really weird scenarios since all the sprites are 2D (flat), and the games was never meant to be "played" that way.  :)

Check out Doom Legacy at http://doomlegacy.sourceforge.net/ (http://doomlegacy.sourceforge.net/)
I have this running on 64bit Windows.

You can do DOSbox scripting.

dosbox.exe "launch game x" (I don't recall the exact syntax"

Just like launch a game with MAME really.

Not only that but if you search for these older games on the net along with "dos box" you'll usually find a pre-setup version where all you have to do is click on the bat.

I bought a couple old DOS games from www.gog.com
They came with wrappers that launch them in dosbox.

If I hadn't previously used dosbox, I wouldn't know they were running in it.

There's also D-Fend reloaded ( http://dfendreloaded.sourceforge.net/ (http://dfendreloaded.sourceforge.net/) ) that is a GUI wrapper for dos box that makes the installing and setting up of most games a bit easier (esp. for those without a working knowledge of DOS )

I used to build PC's at a computer store out of college before Vista was released. I've been a Mac guy ever since. I used to work for apple as a tech  ;D

So yeah. Haha I'll blame windows.  :D

When you want to switch over to a real PC instead of a mac let us know.  ;-)

Seriously Win 7 is probably the best all around OS ever made.  Now 8.... we'll see how well touch screen computers catch on in the next few years before passing judgment.

Another option for Doom specifically would be the Doom 3 BFG edition from Steam - it comes with copies of Doom and Doom 2 that will run on windows 7 64 bit

just be thankful it's only old dos games you want to run..

there are still a huge amount of early windows games (3.1 / 9x) that are practically impossible for your average guy to play these days, you need a full virtual machine with very specific 3d acceleration in many cases (which doesn't exist, or is very slow*) because the old exes don't run on anything above 9x due to improved security etc. in everything past that.

of course I doubt your precious mac is immune to this problem either... i'd guess there are a large chunk of older mac games that are an absolute ballache to get running on anything these days.

* emulating a full x86 PC with 3d acceleration running a complete Windows OS isn't exactly a lightweight task, even most commercial VMs are more tuned to business apps than games.

He's right....  dos games are easy, because they are old as hell and thus easy to run in full software mode.

I've got a bunch of oddball Hasbro discs that came out during that brief period where they owned Atari..... worthless and unplayable.  And these were direct-X games!

The only old game that I haven't been able to get working on a Win7 PC is 4x4 Evolution (Win95-98 era).
It fails some type of memory check.  I assume because the computer is reporting more memory than the game can make sense of.

"640K ought to be enough for anybody" *was* *definitely* said by Bill Gates. He said it at an early microcomputer trade show in Seattle in mid 1981. It is the Microsoft PR machine that has tried over the years to rewrite history and pretend that Gates never made this asinine comment.

I think this game is available on a number of other platforms right?

It is one of the first console games to have cross-platform online play where Dreamcast, Macintosh and PC versions of the game appear online at the same time

This program is FANTASTIC!  I was even able to make shortcut files to run in the Batch folder, so all my games will be in one place.  Genius. Pure Genius.

Glad you like it -- I've been using it for YEARS and it sure makes getting the old dos games installed  much easier than straight DOSBOX which takes some tweaking in most cases to get fully working.

original xbox & dreamcast.   Haven't tried it on a dreamcast emulator.
I have the original PC game and it supposed to have full ffb after installing a patch.
