Title: Straight answer about PC specs
Post by: timeout on December 05, 2013, 03:31:33 am
I am wanting to build a cab.. I would love to use hyperspin but I don't have a lot of hair left... anyway I have 3000 Mame games on mame32 .62 (I think...yep its old but too scared to upgrade)... anyway the computer I have now which I can use is a Dell XPS....

LCD Diagonal screen size22 inch Natural resolution (max)1680 x 1050 pixels

Primary hard drive750 GBOptical
drive DVD-RW

Graphics
Graphics hardwareGeForce 8800 GT (SLI)Amt of video RAM1024 MB
Memory
Amt of RAM 4GBRAM typeDDR2-667
Processor
ProcessorIntel Core 2 QuadProcessor speed2.4 GHz
Software
Operating systemWindows Vista Home Premium

Ok... games I want to play are all the old games...frogger, galxian...ect.. (which I have) but want to play Space Ace, Dragons Lair and fighting games... and metal slug ect... some of the higher end 3d arcade games.... pin ball and juke box ect...
Bit of everything really... My goal is to get hyperspin working.... anyway is that system going to be good enough or should I be aiming higher... I have read zillions of forums and people prattle on for ages and then the posting goes off on another topic....

I am trying to get all software done before I start cutting MDF.... also need to confirm the monitor before I cut ..... I am super keen to have as much feedback as possible so I can start my project...

Thanks heaps

You're fine with your specs. Upgrade to a 64 bit version of mame and your OS, but your specs are more than adequate for what you want to do. Blitz and a few of the newer 3d games like tekken  will probably run a touch slow, but everything else will be good.

I concur - you have enough power.  As recommended, try an update on your MAME and as well as a 64bit version of your OS, but even if you don't I don't think it's an issue - don't think there's an ample gain of 64bit for this context.

For most (not all) MAME stuff you'll be fine but some other emu's ( "some of the higher end 3d arcade games.... pin ball" ) will need a stronger cpu & gpu.

This.  You'll be fine for just about everything you want to do however if you want to play Blitz 99/Gauntlet Legends/SF Rush you're going to be out of luck.  Your CPU isn't strong enough for it.

The system you have will run Hyperspin no problem.  Just remember Hyperspin has a deep learning curve.  To get videos to work you'll spend a lot of time getting your lists right and using tools to make sure everything matches up name for name.  It's super annoying so make sure you back your stuff up!

some of the higher end 3d arcade games

That means different things to different people.   ;)
Be specific if you want a specific answer.

One person might think that means NFL Blitz.
Another might think it means Ikaruga or Samurai Shodown Sen.
I remember one person who posted here expected to play Aliens Extermination.  (which is too new and not supported by any emulator)
