Hello guys,
I'm just in the middle of grabbing some parts together for my Mini Pinball slash Arcade Bartop machine.
Did some tryouts on my main pc and later on on my mini pc, and I'm hooked to the fine details of those virtual pinball tables ..... :banghead:
My journey with the Popeye bartop was a hell of a ride, and it was the best that I could do, and after 3 nice bartops, you come to a point, what can I do more ore better to challenge me again, except another color or artwork :dunno
So it's a new challenge to build a mini pinball machine with a arcade machine in it.. two in one.
Here are the first pictures of this new adventure creeper
(http://i1313.photobucket.com/albums/t544/Bartop-Superfrog/Pinball%20Bartop/Update1a_zps8b978c6b.jpg)
Just in testing phase if everything is running fine.
I got a strong feeling that SouthPark is going the theme of this project.... :laugh2:
Things to do before I start with the woodworking progress:
Running Mame and vpinbal in the same frontend. Now I run Hyperpin, hope to start the mame also in that one... just to find out.
Some experiment with the controller >:D
Don't want this project take a lot of my free time, so it will be a slower project then the Popeye was.
The damn sailor got me almost a nerves-breakdown >:D
Strip down the backglass monitor first.
Playfield monitor will be next when my new monitors will be arrived.
After that I can made some notes about the size and how it will be planed next.
Let's see how this will coming along
Till then, stay tuned
-
Came back to the board today after a long hiatus and have been rewarded.
Can't wait to see it all come together. What monitor sizes are you going to use?
WonderAlex
-
Welcome back
Backglass 15 inch and for the playfield 23,5 inch.
When the sketch is ready in post it here.
Greetings
-
Strip down is finished and I got all the measurements of the monitors.
I made a quick scale setup of the cabinet to see how it will fit at the smallest possible size.
It's still a big one :banghead:
Maybe I can get it a little bit smaller... but we are on the way

Looking good, familiar design ;)

I think these are going to be the next trend after bartops finish their sweep.

Been doing the full size ones for three years now, have been working on a mini version to go with the std mini pin I do. They work well for reusing the back glass for other purposes. The Dmd works well for doing shuffleboard emulation also.

Nice idea! I've been thinking of doing a pinball sometime in the future, but always been hesitating because of the monitors etc. I can easily get some 40" LCDs, but they are 4-5 years old, and have been used up to 20 hours a day, so they have a slight yellow tint, and should be mounted vertically, due to heat.
Using small monitors like that is an awesome idea! Although I would recommend having a large fan at back, and a intake beneath or at front, so you get some circulation around the monitors.
I'm currently thinking of building a small arcade bartop. It would be cool to have a mini pinball by it as well. Maybe 10" 4:3 + 16" 16:9 or something.
-
AYE!
nice work
-
I think these are going to be the next trend after bartops finish their sweep.
Yeah, that's what i think as well. But I tried to install hyperpin, vp etc, but man that is one pain in the §$$
After a couple of hours I deleted everything
And with 2 or 3 screen you have even more things to setup

This way I first enter the world of pinball installation
He got more tuts to follow.
I got a 17 inch backglass monitor here to got replace the 15 inch.
Now I got a full size screen without some bezel... >:D

Thanks for the airflow tip.
10 inch and 16 inch was also my first plan, but I couldn't find the monitors :banghead:
Instead of using a arcade stick and big buttons, the plan is to put a gamepad with the full functions and small buttons, but maybe that will change some time :dunno
-
Thanks for the youtube link, Ill have a look into it again.
Just stumbled upon a video of future pinball with better arcade mode The Loafer Pincab Project WIP #7 - Testing BAM add-on for Future Pinball (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0xFo-MG7IXk#ws)
That is just amazing, real 3d effect :applaud:
-
That's great indeed.. Maximus showed it a while ago and maybe it's a option for my little project to
Not sure yet about the pc hardware..... :banghead:
What I know is that future pinball needs a very high end system.... so.. :censored: :censored:
-
So I did a cardboard mockup to see it in real life and it is very slim >:D
Now I can arrange some monitor heights and button positioning, and maybe it will be a little bigger because of that :banghead:

Star Wars theme was just for the demo, but maybe.... maybe it will replace the South Park theme :dunno
But I like South Park More

Given the reversed print photos, how about a "Rats Wars" theme, Star Wars parody in South Park style?
-
10 inch and 16 inch was also my first plan, but I couldn't find the monitors :banghead:
I got this 9.7 inch from eBay (http://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_trksid=p3984.m570.l1313.TR0.TRC0.X9.7%22+DSLR+HD+4%3A3+1080p+HDMI+BNC+Video+RCA+AV+VGA+1024x76&_nkw=9.7%22+DSLR+HD+4%3A3+1080p+HDMI+BNC+Video+RCA+AV+VGA+1024x76&_sacat=0&_from=R40) which I will put in my nanocade.
-
This looks pretty cool. Hope to see how it comes out.
-
Finally I find the time to cut some MDF.
I love this pinball shape.
Next thing to do is hide the bezel of the monitor into the side of the cab. router time .... >:D

Little update here.
I router the monitor slots, so I can build up the playfield box tomorrow.
Did some artwork layout, just to find some useful pictures >:D

See you soon.....!!

Only because i am a Super Frog fan, not to mention i love eric schwartz art (the guy who draw superfrog animations) i am replying to this topic, not because your pinball looks FREAKING AWSOME DUDEEEE
May i ask is this a mecanical pinball machine? i never knew you can build one from scratch....
Awsome job you got talent ! :)
edit: it's a electronic.... i had to ask because it looked so real!

Welcome to the mini pinball cab owners club!
I've always felt weird about going with a theme that doesn't correlate to an actual game. Yes, there's a South Park table, but not a Stick of Truth table. But if you really love something, you should never let that stop you. I'm a HUGE Lebowski fan and was toying around with the idea of using a Lebowski/Dude theme for my artwork... But I knew I couldn't do that unless I made my own original Lebowski table to go with the art. That seemed like too daunting a task. Oh, and now we have an actual Lebowski machine being made anyway.

MDF is almost ready...
Today I could work a lot on it, so tomorrow it will be finished I hope

I got some SPECIAL things to theme the pinball even better, but that's for later
Tomorrow I can work the whole day on it >:D

I did feel the same about that, but I like the new screenshots better than the old one.
Maybe it will turn back to the old South Park pinball theme.... You never know

Lost a lot of time on shopping today, but I got everything to finish this one.
Only the backdoor of the top need to be done and cut the plexi and aluminium.

Thanks to the fine mini pinball and tips of his Galaga build from Melon at BYOAC, I did jump into making my own pinball.

Things to do is to finish the coindoor and lockdown bar.
After that it's sandpaper and painting time......

First I wanted to build my own plunger like Melon, but when I order my button stuff, the shop had a all ready plunger in stock for 12 Euro's.
I couldn't resist that one..... sad thing of this option is that I have to drop Mr. Hankie to be the plunger knob.
See you later.
-
fantastic superfrog looking great.........I use my kiss mini all the time ....they are as fun as a full size
-
Thanks Pirate
Great to hear you enjoy your KISS pinball :applaud:
I was planning to do a KISS one to, but South Park was also a option.
But it can be all change befor the artwork is printed :dizzy:
Had to redo my coindoor because the sound controller board did not fit.
I had to move the coin button a little to the left :censored:

Coindoor is ready and after a lot of testing, the plexi bending for the lockdown bar is finally done.
Tomorrow drill the holes in it for the buttons and stick and then the building part is finished :notworthy:

i am planning also to build a pinball machine but bigger ;D
-
Keep it up. I'm liking what I'm seeing.

Thanks everyone
I attach some parts of the gamepad to the lockdown bar to hold the stick and buttons in the original position.

Full Throttle ahead >:D
Primer is done and first time wood filler 'not shown on pictures' is ready to dry.
Tomorrow sandpaper time and first time color painting
See you
-
At last..... the paintjob is ready :dizzy:
Rest for a day to give it a good dry and then the fun part starts
Greetings to all .....
-
Nice shine :applaud:
How did you get that?

Nice shine :applaud:
How did you get that?
I have to agree that is a nice paintjob. Be interesting to find out how many coats etc, Or was the paint still wet when the photo was taken :laugh2:
-
Hey, Tommy....go get yer f*cking shinebox!
Nice!
AJ
-
:laugh2: it was wet, but now the paint is dry and it's even more shine :laugh2:
I did 1 layer mdf primer, 2 layers Black primer and 1 layer gloss Black paint.
I always use a brush to paint the whole object, and then roll over the paint with the roller.
NO PAINT ON THE ROLLER..
Works for me

It was a long day with working on the pinball bartop and installing a pc for my wife and install the laptop for the son....
Power-cord is soldered and speakers are placed.
T-molding hammered on and buttons where they belong
Lockdown bar and bezel strips have to be redone...
I paint them satin black, to give it a little different look that I like.
Maybe I change the plexi for glass.... :banghead:
Sleep well
-
damn you paint skill are niceeeeeeeeee.....great work.....
yep glass would look better.... :applaud:
-
damn you paint skill are niceeeeeeeeee.....great work.....

Is there a special kind of glass for it?
Don't want a reflection, so I think normal window glass is not working? :dizzy:
-
Look up anti reflective glass.......might be pricey though....
-
!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! FINALLY !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The outside is done.
It cost me a lot of redo time.
Monitor replaced, spray the lock downbar and trips was a hell.... spray, filler, sandpaper, spray, filler, sandpaper... on and on and on... till I was satisfy.
I had to redo over and over again the under L strip for the Backglass monitor. it needed a specific angle.
First I did it with aluminium, but it was all bumpy and not good, after that I did it with plexi and a heat gun.... mwa... plexi and flame was a good combination, but plexi with the spraycan not. after spraying it was bending and cracking :banghead: :banghead:
Make another one, the same.. so back to aluminium, and this time with another approach and that was the final one....
I did find a new monitor of the same brand and size, but after open up the case, the whole frame was different, so I had to redo that also, to get it fit into the backglass position ... :censored: that made some scratches on the paint on the inside, so redo paint that whole area :censored:
But now I'm back where I was left before the problem week started
Pc is up and running and damn fast, and it runs only one table.. Monster Bash. Love that table gamer
So in the next couple of day's it will be working on the inside and installing and setting up the software.
Till then..... ROCK ON
-
I bet maximus would be proud that you put that shotglass holder on the lockdown bar. >:D
Project looks excellent.
AJ
-
Nice work. The lockdown bar and coindoor controls look clean.

:laugh2:
I think he's crying for not using the 2k model >:D
today it's solder time
-
Lockdown bar is ready and works like a charm
The stick I can use for nudge and in Mame for gaming .
I did use a old scard cable to got a plug and play system, and it has all the wires in it.... so easy to use >:D
Did install the first table Monster Bash with animated backglass and in Hyperpin with animated table and it look VERY SLICK.
So, next job is to install more tables and the mame stuff....
I love it when a plan comes together :laugh2:
Greetings

Friggin' rad!

bad ass.

Thanks guys who took the time to vote for a theme :applaud:
And it's my all time fav. band KISS who won the poll.
Here is my concept where I working on.
-
Yessss,
Finally after some big struggle with HyperPin, I moved over to PinballX and it worked FANTASTIC :notworthy:
Here a quick result.
Sneak Peak KISS Pinball Project (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uTmGf4iL8As#)
List to do: Add more tables, design the KISS artwork for printing, add Mame and other emulators :dizzy:
Enjoy
-
Very cool.
AJ
-
Get out of here, that is so cool. :applaud:
-
It's awesome and I want it :hissy: but dang it I liked the South Park theme better , South Park seemed more unique.
In the end no matter as it is Bad Friggn A. :applaud:

Thanks guys
This was a quick artwork section compare to the popeye artwork :notworthy:
As a KISS fan from 1977 to now, it's GREAT to see this pinball bartop with the demo artwork on it.
I had to redesign the playfield section, because of my flipper button placement is different than on the original cab :dizzy:
But I can live with that
Next week I'm free of work, so hopefully the artwork will arrive in time
-
totally awesome.......Don't let Gene Simmons see this .....he will try to sell them ........lol............really great work Superfrog
-
Yeah, that dude copyrighted "OJ". :D

totally awesome.......Don't let Gene Simmons see this .....he will try to sell them ........lol............really great work Superfrog
:laugh2: With some luck, he will buy it from me, but on the other hand, I could hire myself a lawyer :laugh2:
Today I did upload the artwork for printing and with some luck I got it about 2 days
I picked my old Love Gun album and made a scan of the inlay for my Mala frontend >:D
It's coming along very well ....
See you
-
It's very satisfying to made a layout from scratch in Mala.
A lot of time consuming, but at the end you got a unique piece of artwork
Here some concept shoots from the Mame section.
Greetings
-
Hell Yeah >:D
With some KISS Alive II on the background, I put the final stickers on my pinball machine
It's a beauty if I may say so :laugh2:
The black paint is exactly the same as the glossy sticker, and before I put it on, I did go with a black marker around the side of the cutting line, so I don't got a little tiny white line.
I'm not satisfied about the stickers on the inside of the coin door :banghead:
Maybe I print a whole new sticker for that, but then I have a lot more work on that :censored: coin door.
Here some quick pictures for those who still like to see some KISS
Back to designing the last couple of mala layouts...
Greetings

I dont like Kiss, but I love this pin. Very inspirational. :applaud:

Pure awesomeness. Just Wow :o
Would have loved to see it stay South Park themed, but not knocking Kiss.
Is this considered -Finished- now? Any chance for a FE / gameplay video?

Thanks, No it's not ready yet ;) building process is finished, but when the frontend setup is done I do a photo shoot and video.
South park was long my goal, but t the end of the build it d't feld right ..

>:D it's no playing time yet :banghead: lots of design stuff is going on for Hyperspin.
Back to HyperSpin and it's a lot of work to got a vertical layout.
I'm coming close to the end of the layout setup and all the menu and controller settings.
Have to make some animations voor the background and logo to give it a finishing touch.
2 things I DON'T like ... is the game info text is Vertical :hyssifit: I can't get it at the bottom of the video.
And the resolution is 1024x768 but my monitor is 1920x1080 :banghead:
I have to stretch it down to 1024x768 otherwise it will not displayed correctly.. when I use my 1920 settings and background, it will not show the whole picture.
When I use the 1024 settings and background, it will stretch out and it looks not so crispy and smooth :banghead:
Anyone know how I can overcome those two problems?? :dizzy:
Back to designing
Greetings

sorry, I can't delete this one :dizzy:

Great job :applaud:

are u playing arcade games on this? if not......why not use hyperpin or pinballx

are u playing arcade games on this? if not......why not use hyperpin or pinballx
Jip, playing arcade games also on the backglass monitor and it works very well >:D
I run HyperPin before, but was very buggy for me, specially with the buttons configuration.
Jump over to PinballX and all worked fine.
HyperSpin is my main frontend and in the wheel section is a PinballX Icon, so after that it will run PinballX for the pinball tables.
When I'm done with the setup, I do a short video how it will works
-
Hi there,
I made a quick video of what the concept will be.
Lots of reactions did not understand that I can play arcade games also on this one
Playing Mame and Pinball (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bTZWHq7Ee8Y#)
I need to install more emulators and pinball tables and really a lot of tweaking before I can laydown the keyboard and fire it up with one button press :dizzy:
Enjoy

That is super cool.

Excellent work!

I love it :) Now i want one. Have to sell a bunch of stuff to finance it tho
That's the way I also finance my projects.
Sadly had to sell my Popeye bartop, but sometimes you have to move on :dizzy:
With a little profit you can start your next project with some more extra's.
But always keep your budget in mind when you start a new projct. ( that's how I do it, I can edit a lot of bling end axtra gadgets, But I don't need it and cost a lot more )

There was a lot of trouble with some re-arrange some things to got it worked very well.
Finally I change the plexi to glass and it is way better then plexi :applaud:
For me there is no more plexi in my build anymore.
Still ad more tables to the cabinet and do some final hyperspin settings and design stuff :notworthy:

Thanks guys,
Really, Really struggle with some emulators :banghead:
When I test it in window mode, it runs fine on my backglass monitor, but on full screen it jumps over to the playfield monitor :banghead: :banghead: :banghead:
Genesis, Daphne.. lost a lot of hours to run these M :censored: s
Maybe some batch scripting things?
I even run UltraMon, but did not run with Hyperspin.
So, slow progress here.
Did counting the bills from this build :dizzy: with the brand new pc it's a big one, but hey, you have to gamble sometimes
Hope that someone can help me on the right direction her :notworthy: :notworthy:

Do you by chance run pinballfx2 on that?

Thanks,
PinballX will run and can handle PinballFx2, but I don't use it.. I'm gonna go with Visual Pinball only I think

Thanks. I like the form factor of your cabinet. I plan on doing something similar. Do you have any action shots of a vertical shooter on your lower playfield screen? Thanks for sharing your video.
Do you plan on putting it on legs?

I only play pinball on the playfield and the menu is showing there, arcade gaming is on the backglass monitor.
No, I let it on the table.. it's a bartop ;)
But you never know :dizzy:

Like your Popeye this is another great looking project.
Top shelf work.

What a nice little build, you have surely piqued my interest.
So on with the barrage ;)
- What are the specs of the PC you use to run this?
- The sides look like 18mm (or 3/4"), what material thickness are you using for the rest?
- Were you so lucky that the visible width of the backglass monitor was exactly visible playfield monitor height plus 2 x material thickness?
- How is the painted lockdown bar handling sweaty palms?
- Do you have any internal pics?
-
WoW, I so want to build one of these.

Hi Sho,
Sorry for the very late answers  I was very busy with building a kitchen en painting doors and all kind of crap you came across when a son buys a home
What are the specs of the PC you use to run this? : AMD A8-6600K 3.90GHz FM2, Asus PCI-e Radeon HD6670 1GB, Crucial 1x8GB, DDR3, PC12800, CLI9, Ballistix Sport, Gigabyte GA-F2A88XM-HD3 AMD A88X, SAT600 RAID, Seagate Harddrive 3,5" 1TB, Sata600, 7200rpm
The sides look like 18mm (or 3/4"), what material thickness are you using for the rest? : All my build I use for the sides 18mm and the rest is 12mm MDF. Works for me
Were you so lucky that the visible width of the backglass monitor was exactly visible playfield monitor height plus 2 x material thickness? : No, that was no luck, there was a lot of planning and lurking for the right monitor. Fist I had a 15"backglass monitor, but that was to small for a non bezel frame, so replace it for a 17 and the playfield 24". And after that I could made the slots for the side panels to create the none bezel look.
It feels better to have a non bezel look for this, otherwise the whole thing became a lot bigger and you got large aluminium L strip to cover the monitor frame, and that's what I don't like :dizzy:
How is the painted lockdown bar handling sweaty palms? : For now it still holds  There is a lot of primer, filler and paint on it, so it HAVE to stay good :laugh2:
Do you have any internal pics? : Not for now ;) but if you want some special screens, I could make some if I find some time for it.
Greetings

Impressive!!!
I built a full sized Pin2K cabinet, but have often wondered how it would translate into a mini cab... Looks good!!

Hi Sho,

Thanks, I have already started the build with 18(19?mm) and 12mm, must admit I am a little concerned with fitting the PC inside looking at the sides once they were cut ;)
But, so far so good, it looks like a 16:10 24" monitor's height is very similar to a 4:3 17" (with 2 x 19mm on each side). So aiming for a bezel-less design with those monitors should pan out.

Sorry, Just add signature picture :dunno
-
Totally awesome, another epic build!!

Well after this cab I'm working on I now know what I'm building next. My son loves pinball and I do not have much room in my gameroom but I think I can make room for some thing like this. Great work man!

South Park has a 20 year anniversary this year. Maybe you should build another one that stays South Park themed... :dunno
