Title: Theme discussion!
Post by: AmericanDemon on November 29, 2013, 04:17:27 pm
I've been sketching out cabinets and have started compiling my parts list.  I'm now looking at a theme in order to make all pieces tie together and I have three themes that are battling it out for supremacy.

1) Transformers:  Fall of Cybertron
2) Guacamelee:  Gold edition
3)  Monaco:  Whats Yours is Mine

Transformers, because it has a lot of cool art and will lend itself to a unique build with some interesting LED lighting.  I know the game cant be played well on a CP, but I'm building a hybrid cabinet and it can be played with controllers.

Guacamelee, because it has a unique art style, with bright colors, and it would lead itself to a striking color combination on a cabinet.  The controls appear to be able to be used with Arcade controls.

Monaco, simply because it is truly unique.  It has an arcade feel and bright vivid colors.  I know the controller works for the game but not sure how the game would play on a cabinet.

What do you guys think?

What are you impressions of Guacamelee? How much play time do you have on that? That looks fun.

Guacamelee is a ton of fun. I have about an hour of playtime so far and find it truly enjoyable.   It has a ton of video game references. You find the chozu (so?) statues from metroid. The Mario brothers are luchadores. Some cool stuff. Plus the game is a Metroidvamia styled game. I love those.

I was going to do transformers, but I have zero Photoshop skills.

I've worked on a few Transformer themes in times past.  I'm actually starting to lean towards a "Steam" theme.

I like the last two. I'm all for more original themes.

for me, I'd go with something completely original and not based on anything...

but if I had to choose between the options you've listed, I'd say Guacamelee.

The reason I'm wanting to make it based on a newer game and not just a made up, is to be able to say Yes!  Everyone will ask, "Can I play "Insert Name on Marquee"?  Unfortunately I don't have the knowledge to program my own game.  I've got some neat ideas for Monaco. I want to use the cabinet blueprint and make it full wrap utilyzing the same graphic design as in game. Have a pink lit up control panel.  I think it could be fun.

A steam setup would be pretty clean and sophisticated.

Guacamelee could go in many ways. I just need to figure out what color scheme that I would want, but this would be hard to mess up!

I like this style for Monaco:

I have a bunch of Steam games on my cabinet and I love having the option to play more modern games. Today there are plenty of games that are excellent at capturing the arcade feel (for example, I played Resogun on the PS4 which is a modern twist on Defender- which demonstrates this).

I actually snagged that graphic too. ;) it would be a referance piece for sure.   Resogun looks sweet too. Haven't had a chance to play it yet.  What to do what to do.  I need to spend some more time with Monaco to make sure I'd want to dedicate the theme.

I have Monaco, but haven't played it yet.  I thought I'd check it out since  you posted about in this thread.  After watching the first video on steam, I wonder if it would lend itself to a "Gauntlet tribute" cabinet.  Don't forget about the angle of the joysticks!

I would go with Monaco personally, I think it works better as an arcade game overall. You could also do Castle Crashers or Super Meat Boy or something if you wanted.

It's looking like Monaco is getting the nod!  Building a temp box with a 360 controller hack to test the viability of playing Monaco via arcade controls.

After thinking a bit. This would be pretty cool. A widescreen classic gauntlet inspired cab could be swank.  Monaco fits that style well.

I'm waiting to see somebody do a Rayman themed cab. I think many of the games would work well on a cab and Rayman Legends is great fun.

They even have Mario and Luigi costumes now (sadly only for the WiiU version)... Rayman Legends - Mario & Luigi Costumes Trailer [NCSA] (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qdywvR3UBCk#ws)

Ray man was in my top 5.  Maybe I should do a poll with my top 10....
