I am in the process of setting up as many MK games as possible on my cabinet for my boys to enjoy. I recently got MK komplete edition on steam and since it doesn't use the standard controls as the old ones (kicks on bottom instead of right), i've been thinking about how to map the controls. i've also setup a ps2 emulator for playing Deadly Alliance, Deception, and Armageddon.
i know that the original mk arcade games, the buttons were laid out in an unusual manner, which is difficult to replicate with standard arcade controls. I don't have any fond memories of playing it in the actual arcade, so the authenticity of the button layout doesn't matter to me that much. Having the block button in the middle seems a little weird, i was thinking about keeping the attack buttons on 1,2,4 and 5, and moving the block/run/other buttons to the right side...is this a bad idea? i can't imagine anyone is going to complain about it. i have a 7 button layout on my panel.

LP BL LK
MK3, UMK3, MK Trilogy, MK4, MK Gold
HP BL HK R
LP BL LK
MK Komplete
FP BL BP Tag

i dont even remember how i mapped the ps2 games, i haven't really played them since putting them on there.

Funny, I JUST had a conversation about this with a buddy of mine at his arcade party on Saturday. I have mine mapped similar to the previous MK series (with both punches on the left and both kicks on the right). However, he pointed out that he matched his layout to the OFFICIAL MKK arcade stick (which he already owns).
There a great discussion about this topic here: http://www.gamefaqs.com/boards/716429-mortal-kombat-komplete-edition/66641483 (http://www.gamefaqs.com/boards/716429-mortal-kombat-komplete-edition/66641483)
One guy there summed it up pretty well IMHO: "What you don't get is that the special moves, combos, etc. are done with a particular control scheme in mind. In the original mortal kombat, changing the controls would have ended in very awkward movements, for example sub zero slide.
That's why I want the arcade stick button assignment, because that's what the developers had in mind, and perhaps using that, things will start to make more sense."
Based on that... I'm going to change my arcade button layout to match. :applaud:
Hope this helped!

I have mine the same as yours except that I don't have the 7th button mapped to anything in MK & MK2.
I like the 7th button for Tag, as it can be consistent across various games. In any game where you can tag a partner, I have that button mapped to it.
In MKK, I also have #5 mapped to stance, but am considering not having it mapped to anything since flipping stance doesn't accomplish anything anyway.
It kinda just causes confusion when I accidentally hit it.
As far as being consistent across the series, MKK doesn't fit into that anyway.
As was said, the proper thing to do is match the xbox controller layout, but with block dropped into the middle.
It just feels like it makes more sense when you're playing it.
When switching back to the arcade MK games right after playing MKK, it does take me a few rounds to change gears though.

The stance button is there pretty much to make the boobs face the screen.

Front Kick + Back Kick = Flip Stance
Front Punch + Back Punch = Throw

I played a few rounds of a few mk games this weekend, and determined that I'm going to keep the block button in they middle...It just works for me at this point.
In mkke I did change the bottom middle button from stance to throw, which is much more useful. I also reconfigured they PlayStation 2 mk games to match. with the 7th button as the switch fighting styles button. ..this works well.
Thanks for the input
