Title: J2 520 pos terminal
Post by: cush on November 24, 2013, 02:23:49 pm
Anyone have any knowledge of these things :
(http://i128.photobucket.com/albums/p187/HuMpH_02/Arcade/j2520front.jpg) (http://s128.photobucket.com/user/HuMpH_02/media/Arcade/j2520front.jpg.html)
Getting one off a mate but just wondered if anyone has put windows on one and used it as touchscreen pc or as a small jukebox like I want.
I know it has a 160gb hd and he said it has 3 usb so was wondering if I could format and install windows from usb pen.
Any info or  ideas for quickest way to install OS greatly welcome.

All i could find was the manual to the 520 EX model

http://j2usa.com/docs/J2%20520ex%20Technical%20Manual.pdf (http://j2usa.com/docs/J2%20520ex%20Technical%20Manual.pdf)

I have a terminal that someone gave me years ago. I've been meaning to make it into a small bartop arcade for a while now.

I know that some pos' rely upon a central server so I'm sure how independent they can be.

The manual posted above shows windows xp as a supported operating system so it looks like a go.
Why not just install the os on the hard drive?
It also supports a 2nd VGA monitor which may come in handy.

cush
yup u can
the usb is for tying to a main server >main unit that housed all of the data<
the o/s and backup etc
at 160 gig u have some head room there
just run windows xp :mini:it will load from usb stick reasy
and add drivers as u need
also the usb's were used by field techs to bypass the touch when in service mode
ie: firmware,hardware updates

Thanks for the help lads, that manual is better than one I had found..nice one.
I got this last night and had a quick go at installing xp from a usb pen but kept getting so far then get a stop error, something to do with path not working but was xp pro on a multi OS pen drive I use, I don't have xp mini yet. After looking inside I was going to connect a cd as manual shows but couldn't find power splitter so that will be sorted today hopefully. Will update later how I get on,Cheers Guys.

well had no luck with this yet,not sure what I'm missing lol.
Firstly the hd had win2k on but obviously stopped booting when looking for server or such, then I took out hd and wiped it in another pc.On booting it says usual msg about no system disk (as it is empty) But when I then connect a cd drive to run win install I keep getting a hard disk failure and machine hangs as though hd is dead.Remove cd drive and all good again, finds empty hd.
Bios finds hd fine every time but every time cd is connected same error, anyone see what I can't ??? Head is cabbaged now lol.

Have checked everything numerous times, hd=primary master, cd =primary slave, both Ide.Bios lists both normally but hangs for a while then master disk failure error, if I take cd drive off then boots hd fine. Must be me but just cant see it yet lol time to leave it for a bit.

ok this may or may not help
make sure your hd is slave
your cd is master
set bios to boot from cd
now before all of this
remove hd and slave it
place it as a slave in your windows box
and :clean: it :de-index-it: then format to ntfs
then place back in the other unit as a slave
boot from the cdrom
tell it to format the harddrive
once done it should want to load it
all u are doing here is 2 things
1=u are moving it from cable select mode to master/slave right now u want it slave
2=u are replacing the :mbr:=master boot record, with a windows mbr
windows will tell u if  track 0 is non workable

Are the jumpers on both the HDD and CD drive setup properly so that the settings match where they are connected (ie master\slave) IIRC with IDE it has to be setup properly or might cause problems if both are set to be master or slave which might be why it works fine if only one is installed but locks up once the other is also connected.
