I am starting a new cab and was wondering what kind of video card I will need to run HLSL without any slow down. Can I get away with an on board Intel Graphics solution?

The answer to the second part is no.
The answer to the first part is that there are games in mame right now that won't run full speed without HLSL much less with it, so there is no answer to your question.

The bare minimum to run HLSL is to have a graphics card or onboard chip that can handle Pixel Shader 3.0. I tried that myself by getting a Geforce 6200 PCI card and yes.... I got Mame to run with HLSL. But it was crap and really slow and that was just with Robotron. I didn't try anything else from the 90s for example. You need to be running something beefier and better to get the best from HLSL.

Ok, thanks guys. I did fire it up on my main machine that has a high end video card and was pretty happy with some of the games that I tried. The only problem is that I would be going down to a Mini-ITX board for the project with an on board Intel Video solution. The newer ones do support pixel shader 3.0 but it is pretty pricey for what I want to do. I guess I have my answer, thanks again!

Good idea on the Scan Line Generator. I put one in my 60 in 1 machine that is running a crt PC monitor and got a great looking picture.
