Okay im being very lame but cannot work this out.
In outlook mame I hae configured the analog inputs as accelerator and brake.
But whenever I take my foot off the accelerator it brakes.
But if I press the brake and accelerator together it starts to slow down. So it cant be on the whole time.
I tried changing to brake - and accelerator -. By slowly pressing the pedals down when configuring but this didnt help.
What have I done wrong? I know someone on here will know in 1 second.
Thanks

combine accelerator and brake as same device? (in wheel setup)

Combine pedals. Tried that earlier. Will try again tomorrow.
Spent 2 hours cleaning viruses off my rig because I thought id never need antivirus on there. I browse for outrun on google click a few links and get infected with malware. That i couldnt even removr in safe mode. That will teach me

using my logitech momo wheel (uncombined pedals) i use
Pedal 1 Analog = Joy 1 Brake
Pedal 1 Analog Dec = Joy 1 Brake - (Step on the brake before hitting the map button, then hit the map button, then release the brake)
Pedal 1 Analog Inc = Joy 1 Brake + (Hit the map button, then step on the brake
Pedal 2 Analog = Joy 1 Gas
Pedal 1 Analog Dec = Joy 1 Gas -
Pedal 1 Analog Dec = Joy 1 Gas +

NEVER map pedal inc and pedal Dec when using analog controls!!!!
It makes them work as digital instead.
There is an option to reverse each pedal in the name in game menu under analog iputs. That is where your issue is.

A further explanation:
Pedal 1 Analog is used when you have an analog controller.
Pedal 1 Analog Inc and Dec are used when you are using pushbuttons.
If you map your analog pedal to this, MAME will take it as a button being pressed as soon as it sees any movement instead of seeing it as an analog range.
In the Analog Controls section in the MAME in-game menu (TAB):
The only things that affect analog controls are Sensitivity and Reverse.
Everything else is for tuning how the game responds when you substitute key presses for the analog controls.
Let's say you have the steering mapped to the arrow keys):
Digital Speed will affect how fast the steering wheel moves in game when you press a directional arrow.
Autocenter speed will affect how fast the steering wheel returns to center after you release a direction arrow.
It works the same way when keys are substituted for pedals. It can retun to center faster if the button that is mapped to Dec is pressed.
If you set the Autocenter speed to zero, it will not return return to center until the button mapped to Pedal Dec is pressed.
To reiterate, don't ever map anything to Pedal Inc and Pedal Dec if you're using analog pedals.
and
In the MAME analog controls menu, the ONLY adjustments that affect your analog controls are Sensitivity and Reverse.
This is covered in the driving cab info thread, but I understand that is somewhat of a wall of text.
The other HUGE thing in MAME if you missed it is that the default dead zone in mame.ini is set to 30% which makes for a pretty horrible experience. I have it set to .05 and and have the saturation set to 1 (100%)

Reverse pedals are set to off. If i turn them on it just makes it go when accelerator is off and brake when depressed.
Tried brake + and accelerator +. Reverse pedals. Still no joy.
Setp cannonball and works fine. Must be missing something

Did you try reversing just one of them?
I seem to remember most of them needing one reversed and not the other.
Try mapping only the gas see if it works backwards.
When you have the gas working, add the brake.
If the car doesn't go anymore, then reverse the brake.
I don't remember the specifics with outrun, but most games require you to calibrate in the game's service menu too.
(usually mapped to F2 by default) Some older games don't have a service menu.
