Title: Button Wiring

OK I promise I did plenty of searches before posting this.  I know that I stumbled across this here before, but just can't find it.  I am in the process of wiring up my cp and need to figure out what buttons are what...

   1 2 3   or  4 5 6
   4 5 6        1 2 3

Are these the most common ways or is there a better order?

The secound one is the most common. Most people like the buttons used the most to be across the bottom. I think it will also fit the most default games this way. YOu can always change it later in mame either globally or on a per game basis.

When I was doing my research about a year and a half ago, the first seemed to be the most used one (I believe either the X-Arcade or Hotrod used that layout, whichever was around then).  

Doesn't matter, anyway, I used the first layout and it works fine.  I don't find any ergonomic problems when playing a one or two person game.  

Eightbit it right though, hook it up however you like, and you can change it later.

Don't map anything like the x-arcade layout. I have one the default is awefull. I think they made it different just so they weren't copying any one else and could claim that there layout was better.

I've used the second layout a couple of times...but I think I might use the first layout just so I don't have to change all of the fighter game inputs...

I don't know if it'll be a big deal having the 1 2 3 on the top row or not...time will tell.

123 on the top row makes it so 6 button fighters won't require remapping.

My setup:
456
123

BUT with my ctrlr hacks (found on my website) for 6 buttons games it is like
123
456

for 4 button games it is like
12x
34x

for neogeo it is
123
xx4

using ctrlr files is much easier to use to remap a group of games.  you can define neogeo.ini, cps2.ini, etc. to eefect those games.

Now I'm confused - It's been quite some time since I've played SF2 in the arcade... Are the kick buttons really the top 3? .... wow.

punch buttons are top.  kick on bottom

papa, read the ctrlr.txt in the doc folder of mame.  They are cool.  And once FEs start using controls.dat with HowardC's viewer if oyu use ctrlr files the buttons you have mapped for a game will be the ones displayed.

No - The kick are the bottom 3.  People that have played capcom fighters alot in the arcade should stick with this layout:

456

Like Sir P is suggesting, you should definately use cltr files to switch it around.
