It's a strange hobby, this arcade business. Practically all the games were difficult, bad graphics, and expensive to play. But I think that is aprt of the charm - easy to play, hard to master. And the battle for the high scores were legendary. Not to mention built out of unobtainium - they weren't games you could really "own", except for a crummy port to a home console.
The games I will remember on arcade vastly outnumber the home console games I think about from time to time. Console games are very much "in the moment" and when you are done with them, they seem to go away. Here's a few non-arcade games that I hold dear:
FFVII (PS)
Resident Evil 1 & 2 (PS)
Splinter Cell Chaos Theory (xbox)
Airborne Ranger (c64)
Maniac Mansion (c64)
Rainbow Six Three (PC version)
Racing Destruction Set (c64)
Paradroid (c64)
-
Dark Caverns (XEGS)
Zarlor Mercenary (Lynx)
Mega Man 4 (NES)
Secret of Mana (SNES) or Secret of Evermore
Shining Force (Genesis)
Wonder Boy III: The Dragon's Trap (SMS) I created a set of icons from this game and incorporated at least one (usually the dragon) in all of the Windows software I wrote for years.
Grand Theft Auto: Vice City (PS2) is the only game in my collection I have multiple copies of and is also my mothers favorite.
Cel Damage (GCN)
Duke Nukem 3D (PC) the amount of time spent on this game was only eclipsed by Carmageddon and Half-Life.
-
Bee 52 (NES)
Mario RPG (SNES)
Metal Gear Solid Series (PS1/2/3)
Mortal Kombat II and 9
Just about all Zelda Games
-
spheretris - n64
deathtrak - dos
Ok, I've came back to this after sufficient coffee
Tetris
Super Hexagon
-
Pro Wrestling - NES
Tecmo Bowl - NES
Blades of Steel - NES
Tetris - Game Boy
Super Mario Land - Game Boy
Pokemon Yellow - Game Boy Color
Magical Hat no Buttobi Tabo! Daibōken - Megadrive
Street Fighter II: Special Champion Edition - Genesis
Mario Kart - N64
Goldeneye - N64
Skies of Arcadia - Dreamcast

It's not really a valid question is it? The games you remember fondly are ones you already remember fondly because they are old... or else you wouldn't remember them fondly. The ones that are newish, well unless you can tell the future, you don't know yet. For that matter you can't really tell if a game you like now will be one you continue to like in the future, because again, no crystal ball.
I haven't had to pull out my "idiot police" badge in quite some time, but... well.....
;)
-
You don't remember things in a good light because they are old, but because they are good and original. If it was just about age, well then we'd all be building Pong cabinets.
At the time when I was playing through Splinter Cell Chaos Theory, for the hundredth time, I was thinking "this is the best game ever!" which is something that didn't happen with any single 360/PS3 game in my experience. I had a lot of fun on them, but there was nothing that really did anything new. The majority of them tried to combine several types of game into one with less than stellar results, and many times I just kept playing after the thrill was gone for the sake of completion.
-
Duke Nukem 3D (PC) the amount of time spent on this game was only eclipsed by Carmageddon and Half-Life.
Hail to the King!
And pretty much all the games from Intellivision. Great thread. :applaud:
-
You "the PS3/360 wasn't really all that good" guys are hilarious. :applaud:
I mean, I get it. Those $15 TV joysticks started the funeral, and the $5 XBL/PSN legal game downloads were the final coffin nail in the MAME cabinet hobby. (Hell, even the emulators play and look better on the 360/PS3 than any comparably priced PC)
All the built in media playback functionality meant we weren't having to mod everyone's Xbox anymore. Native HD support. Games more immersive and polished than ever before to the point it makes playing old generation console games almost painful.
PC gaming would be dead if the consoles hadn't more or less unified the port process this generation, now it's firmly back in the hands of the middle aged neckbeards just like your glory days in the 80s. Rejoice!
Anyway, more seriously, I've give the nod to these recent games off the top of my head:
Mass Effect 2
Red Dead Redemption
Uncharted 2
Portal 1 (though 2 did eventually grow on me)
Far Cry 3
Stuff I thought extremely overrated:
Bioshock - all of them. Yes, we get it, you've got a boner for Atlas Shrugged. Meh.
Dishonored - critics couldn't make this one happen no matter how hard they tried. Think it was, what, $15 6 weeks after release?
Deus Ex: Human Revolution - booooooring
-
Hmmm...
Going back to my C64 days:
- Jumpman
- Ultima 1 and 4
- Mail Order Monsters
- Spy Hunter
- Bard's Tale series
- Pirates
Consoles:
- Sonic
- Kid Chameleon
- Sub Terrainia
- Sol Deace
- Military Madness
- Genghis Khan
PC
- Starflight
- Duke Nukem 3D
- Half Life
- StarCraft
- Ultima Online
-
I still think of playing Jetpack on the ZX Spectrum, that game was epic,
Jetpac (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jT4gzLAryCs#)
also Manic Miner on the Spectrum
Manic Miner (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F7khL9Ms4ow#)
and I loved Ghostbusters on the Commodore 64
C64 Longplay - Ghostbusters (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X1jKHHeufS0#)

I almost considered Kid Chameleon, one of the best sleepers for that console. I withheld because I didn't play through twice. Once I got a Game Genie and learned the warp trick. It was just a matter of selecting the level of choice and playing from there.

Hehe...I didn't have any cheats...I think I just left my console on for about 4 days at a time seeing how far I would get.
-
Let's rename this thread "old console/pc games that I still regularly play on my cabinet or with dosbox"
Unless you mean stuff like Ultima IV, which I remember fondly but will never have the patience to play through again.
Master of Orion I + II (pc)
Utopia (Intellivision)
Treasure of Tarmin (Intellivision)
Twisted Metal 2 (psx)
Missile Command (Atari 800)
Blue Max (Atari 800)
Archon (Atari 800)
Chaos (Atari ST version)

Yeah, that's about what I did the first play through. I hammered away on it during a snowstorm. It's especially diabolical if you get caught in the looping levels. After that my poor hands couldn't stand the thought of another grueling run like that.
-
The title of the thread should read: "What games are going to remember to play in the future"
Considering the catalogues we have. ;D
-
Ok, if I take the heading at it's face value (which no one else seems to be doing) then in the future I will most fondly be remembering Call of Duty: World at War on the Wii and The Last of Us on PS3.
-
What, no DOOM?! Ok, so ... Doom. And Paradroid.

That's a great list. I wish Utopia was a one-player game. That was the downfall of a lot of fantastic Intellivision games.

Archon
No love for Archon II: Adept? I found it to be superior.
-
Never heard of it. I didn't own a '64, I was sharing a friends.
-
Well in that case it is a bit of a confusing thread. In the non defined future I shall mainly remember 'GTA17: Moon Base City Hoes' as being the game I liked to play in the non defined past and my twilight years.

No Grand Theft Pokemon? You know... for the day Nintendo makes a console for the mature crowd. :P

My teenage children still play Pokemon (not the card game). A lot of their friends do as well. I'm surprised that it has held up for 10+ years but who am I to talk? I keep thinking that when these kids get older someone is going to make a PG-13 live action Pokemon movie that will kill at the box office.
-
Oh, I may also get GTA 5, in which case that might be a game I'll remember fondly in the future...

I checked out Dragon's Crown. Wow! Besides being really R-rated fap material... it looks like a pretty good game and right up my alley. I'd totally play it... if I didn't have young kids in the house lol!
:laugh2:

It's a strange hobby, this arcade business. Practically all the games were difficult, bad graphics, and expensive to play. But I think that is aprt of the charm - easy to play, hard to master. And the battle for the high scores were legendary. Not to mention built out of unobtainium - they weren't games you could really "own", except for a crummy port to a home console.

Rainbow Six Three (PC version)
Racing Destruction Set (c64)
Paradroid (c64)
Wow... Racing Destruction Set and Paradroid... There's a blast from the past. My best friend and I used to play Racing Destruction Set and make all these outrageous tracks in low/high gravity just to watch our vehicles float off or pancake... Loved that game... :)
Rainbow Six Three (PC) was also a lot of fun, I think I played that one and R6 Vegas 2 (also PC) the most out of the series.
I do remember several C64 game that I loved:
Racing Destruction Set
Paradroid
Archon I & II
Uridium
Blue Max
Impossible Mission
Spy vs. Spy
Out of all the computers I've owned, I think I get the most nostalgic for the C64... I loved the Amiga also, but the C64 games we just awesome... :)
Other games that I have some very fond memories of are because of the ties to friends and my kids... Some of the best times I had gaming was with them...
Pro Wrestling (NES)
Battle Arena Toshinden (PSX)
Dragon's Lair and Space Ace (Arcade)
Street Fighter II and all variants (Arcade and console versions)
Super Smash Bros. (N64, played this with my daughters a lot)
Unreal Tournament 2K and 2K3 (PC, played with my kids and friends on many LAN parties)
